At the end of October I had quite the road trip presented to me. My friend Paul (@the911GOAT on Instagram) got the call that his 959 was ready from collection at Porsche Classic HQ after having its service in Germany. Serendipitously I also had business on Porscheplatz, so a plan was hatched to get over to Zuffenhausen and repatriate that 959, and sharp - so we left the next day!
The reason for our haste was the impending coronavirus restrictions taking hold across Europe. While we were currently permitted to travel, we knew the situation could change in both the UK and Germany any hour due to the worsening COVID situation.
What you're about to watch is our crazy attempt at dashing to Germany before bringing the 959 back to the UK, with our support vehicle of choice for the repatriation being a fellow 200mph Porsche in the 992 Turbo S. Cue some inevitable changes to the plan, a high speed Autobahn run, plus a bucket list experience of getting to drive the 959 on its home turf of Germany's famously de-restricted highway. You'll learn all about the history of the 959 and its model specs in this video, before finding out if we made it back on time, in one piece, and free from quarantine! Enjoy.

Now imagining belting down the Autobahn in the 80s, an early morning around sunrise, spring or early summer. No pesky TDI estates in your rear view mirror, in fact no traffic at all in sight. New Order's Blue Monday blasting out of your brand new Blaupunkt Stereo and donning a pair of Carreras as soon as the sunlight hits the windshield. Tank brimmed, road atlas open on the passenger seat. Your destination? Austria? Italy? South of France? That road is yours. Thanks for sharing your experience. Though it is 2020, it must have been truly magical. :)

... to my view, he even couldn't try because the road was so crowded. His German fiend = a guy with no balls. A "real" German dude will go 240 for "hours + hours", maybe than, some time even faster. This was a great example of US of A emotions like : "oh I reached 300 for 3 seconds, now I am immediately back to 150. It is comparable with drag-racin' : oh, I go fast for a quarter mile, that's it, don't do more. 2. example : Oh, I am such a great guy, I burn my tires, or 3rd example : "my exhaust is the loudest". They are all show up guys. They are not used to it just to do it for them self, because they have to. What we could call our reality, to them and their viewers it's just the realization of a dream but just for 5 seconds, reminds me of a kid getting his first orgasm, after a couple of seconds, it's done, it's over.

I applaud the 959's owner for sharing his remarkable vehicle, as I also benefited from the generosity of someone with some very famous cars in their day. Specifically, I was lucky enough to drive the 'infamous' 3.3 Turbo 4-speed manual for a few years in my late teens/early 20s as a friend's father had one and he let me drive it quite often, along with his 2.7 Carrera. I once asked him why he was happy to hand me the keys, and he said two things that have stuck with me. "If I thought it likely you'd have an accident that was your fault, I wouldn't. But these are cars to be enjoyed at all ages, not just the wealthy middle-aged or older." He was a great guy in many ways, not just in his generosity to me. Watching this brings back some happy memories, and, yes, you are living a lot of petrol heads' dream in this video. The amazing current Turbo S, and the legend that is the 959. Thanks for providing this record of the experience. I expect, just as is true for me of my experiences in those great cars years ago, you'll never forget this.

this car always had a strange fascination to me. as a kid we played "autokarten" ( car-cards?). these were sets of 32 cars on cards with their spec - displacement, horsepower, cylinders, price, topspeed asoasf, you play against each other with your top card choosing a spec and whoever is better wins. i remember having this 959 in one of the sets and it was so strange to me that it was a porsche, its optics always drawn me in, but it is also somehow disgusting to look at, although the side line is very nice xD strange car, i think it was one of the 8 or 9 959 built later, because i clearly remember it was priced 1,5 million deutsche mark in the set and i couldnt believe that a porsche can be worth that much ( although now i understand, they shouldve priced it 10 million and try to make an overall win out of it ^^)

What an interesting video. Very lucky indeed to be able to drive such a rare car. As you mentioned in the video the F40 was a stripped out hardcore racer ~ 470/500hp Whereas the Porsche 959 444hp truly demonstrate the sophistication and technical achievement to achieve 200mph including creature comforts with "only" 444hp. It's possible to trump this video with a drive of a 918 spyder or to go full hardcore even a le mans 917. However, the Kudos alone of the 959 must surely trump either of the above.? ... What I'd like to know. what modern day porsche is a direct/close comparison in performance /power delivery. This may make it easier to convey the 959 experience in a modern context. ... As an aside, 31mpg from a 650hp Porsche is indeed quite impressive. Did you corroborate that with fuel used by any chance?

I was 12 at the time, the world was buzzing with the 959 and the F-40. Of course, us youngsters were more impressed with the F-40 because it was more raw and we counted everything in top speed numbers but...as time went on I was able to appreciate the engineering marvel that the 959 was. Today I would settle with the 930/964, so long as it has that traditional look and lacks electric steering because the steering feel of the old cars is everything to me as a driver, modern cars have killed my love for driving. Thanks for the memory flashback, I wish I were sitting in that seat instead of you, even for a short while😉

The 959K “Komfort” model was not capable of 200 mph in stock form. The 959S “Sport” could go over 200 mph(211 mph). The sport model was lighter. It deleted the passenger side mirror, air suspension, rear seats, as well several other items.

Wow! What a day that must have been. Thanks for sharing. I like how you lost your place in the F-40 conversation. It was cool to see the reality and magnitude of that moment setting in. Great work. I hope you and yours are safe and healthy over there.

Driving the 959 on the autobahn would be on par with winning the lottery or dating a super model. It would be the kind of thing you would reminisce about with your friends at the old-folks home, saying "I lived an amazing life."

Bill Gates "loobied" with other rich Porshe fans to pass a "Show and Display" law which allows the import non FMVSS registerd cars by private owners if they have "historical or techical significance", and less of 500 units produced. That way he could drive his 959 which had been at that time more than 10 years in the customs.

Wow! at 8.45, you show a picture of a 959 reg - OJN959. This actual car was owned by a friend of my uncle who bought it in the late 80s. I have some old video footage of us going in it 33 years ago. It's amazing that it still has the same number plate on it that Richard had on it when he first purchased it all those years ago. "It was a pretty serious car back in its day!" You're a lucky guy to be able to drive one!

How sad Germany is following the rest of the Pathetic lockdown and restrictions for the China virus! You did a fucking amazing job narratively, and your knowledge of the history of Porsche. And your passion for in my opinion “The best sports cars ever built for the common human to engage in everyday driving. And feel like you are part of Le Mans !

You are wrong about why Porsche couldn’t sell the car in the US.They could have given up multiple cars for cash testing as we did in Europe, but the price of selling the car is white would have bankrupt Porsche

Interesting car but I was alive when it was released and in competition it was very disappointing and overshadowed by competitors at the time like the F-40 and the Audi race cars, both on the track and in group B rally. To be fair I don't think Porsche was serious about racing it. All this makes the car more odd and obscure, and one of coolest cars ever.

¥ea what a piece of shit, yea back then it was a new thing but the price of it was ridiculous especially as a testing of engineering, but is this 959 worth the price? Hell no, its worth maybe 125,000 thats it, its garbage and very delicate. But that new Porsche is an art piece.

I am a muscle car man , but the 959 is my favourite Porsche. This car is more relevant than the F40 as the tech in this car was what was to come in the future which is now. The Carrera GT is amazing but this is the Daddy of Porsche super cars.

How nostalgic is this super car to me during the late 80's when my boss (a Sheikh) bought six out of 200 unit produced by Porsche, then he send back to Stuttgart 5 of them to change the exterior paint color and interior to his preference for a 100k each. This is his daily driver whenever he's out. What a beautiful car by then it's one of the rarest car of his collection.😀😀😀🏎🏎🏎

I have no problems because I don’t mind what happens. If I had to earn a livelihood what shall I do, having no conflict psychologically? Because there is no conflict there is no ambition, then I don’t depend, then I will do what I can in the world.
