Whilst I was in Germany reviewing the brilliant ALPINA B7, I was offered the chance to interview ALPINA's CEO Andreas Bovensiepen. Originally we agreed on a 15 min session in his office, it turns out I was much luckier than a bargained for, seems Andreas likes my stuff and was willing to give me a couple of hours of his very precious time. It was an absolute honour to ride shotgun with such a legend, let alone fire loads of questions his way!

Alpina has come a long way. In the 80's & 90's their spoilers were made of the cheapest hard plastic and were visibly bolt ones. I worked at BMW in Germany at the time and the BMW M ground effect kits as well as many other after market kits were so much better quality wise but Alpina engines were always top of the line. Today Alpina is clearly a high quality car all the way around.

Hi Joe, I’m an ex pat living out in LA but from West London myself... was scrolling thru videos of the Mini Cooper S (I have the R56 MCS) and noticed your vid on the JCW one from Berry and you driving thru Chiswick area brought back so many fond memories - I had to watch it on the big TV just to enjoy it even more... great video., Then I’m like, let’s see what else this Joe bloke has done... cue this Alpina vid.... and can I just say, EPIC interview with the Main Man Andreas, I never much cared for Alpina’s in the past, but my God do I want one now just based off of the heritage and just because Andreas is such an Amazing and humble guy - a LEGEND!!! So chilled, sharp and cool. wow! Andreas Bovensiepen passion for the brand was amazing to watch, its clear that his values are personified in the products that Alpina are currently producing. This clearly shows with the right management, a passionate leader, involvement and nuturing bring together a whole workforce! Can't imagine any other CEO being so accessible, drifting, hustling a beast that is the B7 down winding country roads, 200mph on the autobahn, amazing capture Joe! Alpina is a gleaming light at a time where BMW are making more and more decisions based on commercial factors rather than the brand. Andreas if your reading, forget what has been said, there is a market for a D1 with the D3 engine! :-D

First of all thank you Joe Achilles for taking your time, effort, energy and good vibe to make these honest car test videos (I decided to buy an D3 biturbo touring allrad after watching your short term test videos of a 3 series Alpina) you do really a great job and I hope people can feel it and appreciate it. The proof is this video in which the CEO off one of the best manufactures of “sport/daily cars” (the owners of Alpina cars will understand) is presenting the 7 series flag ship while driving and politely answering to all of your questions and in between squeezing the shit out of the car (we all know he was/is a race car driver so this was “walk in a park for him”). Great video of a debate between car producer and independent car test driver/blogger. (I am not an native english speaker so excuse me for some mistakes. You know what I mean 😉) Cheers to all Alpina friends. M

I still remember seeing this gentleman giving an interview during a TV program (I guess) comparing both the Alpina B5 and the BMW M5, both from the E60 generation. The video is on YT for anyone to see. I'm glad to see him still in the business as CEO, and Alpina's doing great. I wish I had the chance to speak to him for a few minutes at least. Excellent video, thanks a lot!

Thanks for uploading! I once owned a B3 3.2 cabrio. It was an absolutely beautiful car and very fast (the M3 of the same series had a bit more hp but less torque and as Andreas Bovensiepen says: in your average driving a you use high torque is much more than a lot of hp's. I think the one I had was of the first series that had "tiptronic" (an automatic, but with buttons on the steering wheel so you could (very quickly!) change gears if the automatic gearbox was in the sport position. Unfortunately for the Alpina I got married, there came a baby, the baby-stroller didn't fit in the boot of a cabrio..... So I had to go for a more practical car (of course I still went for one with 200+ hp). I would really like to get another Alpina some day but in Holland they are hard to find (and expensive if you find one - even if it's old and has a high mileage). If anyone knows of a good way to get an affordable Alpina I would really appreciate to hear it.

Alpina at the moment is exactly what BMW M used to be in the past and should be now. Thankfully they have a lot of fans and customers who know what BMW should be, because M went into really wrong direction over last few years. When I heard about active sound (or whatever that shit is called) for the first time I didnt know if I want to laugh or cry. And Im sure that exactly is the reason why Alpina is doing so well. I would choose B5 over the new M5 no matter what. Thanks Joe for great interview and all materials with Alpina cars. Im sure that soon we will see your test of the new B5 :)
@JoeAchilles17 жыл бұрын
I totally agree! BMW M division have lost their way a bit lately, AMG and ALPINA have capitalised. I find ALPINA's have a soul about them, weather it's a D3 or B7. I was very fortunate to do this, and now feel part of the family :-)
@vagabundo64097 жыл бұрын
Great! So I hope that as a family member you will do the first review of B5 on youtube :) BTW. Mr Bovensiepen seems to be really cool guy. I didnt expect such intersting coversation. As long as there are people with huge passion and knowledge we will have great and exciting cars.

There is no Alpina or AMG that comes close to my M2 :P
@KrazyPolak877 жыл бұрын
Vagabundo, I couldn't agree more with your entire comment. I personally think that the M's lost it in the mid-end of the 2000's. I used to be a big BMW freak (owning quite a few of them and M's from the 90's) but lately I've been really impressed with the AMG's, I think most people buy the M's now adays are just for the letter and not for what the car should be. I remember driving around in the E34 M's and E36 M's, man those thing would make you laugh the whole time driving them. Oh those good ol' days. That's just my opinion though.
@vagabundo64097 жыл бұрын
MattyJ, I wouldnt go as far as you, I think M5 E60 and M3 E92 are really good and fun cars. But those one are the last one in my opinion. I didnt drive M2, but many says that is a true oldschool M car. Alexander - any thoughts? Comparison to old Ms?

Andreas what a cool character. Super interesting, very technical and informative, an absolute joy to listen to. Top interview Joe, your knowledge and questioning was spot on and you can tell Andreas was impressed, he was animated, smiling and had really good humour.

Great video Joe,a bit short though,would have loved to hear more stories!I visited as a 14 year old the ALPINA factory,that was 1982 and I am obsessed with ALPINA!And I also had the pleasure to meet Andreas here in Australia when we had the ALPINA launch at our dealership!Could only talk a few words with him,but I was honered to shake his hand!Great guy,fantastic cars,my all time favourite!Just sad,ALPINA is pretty much unknown here in Down Under!I owned a B10 3.5 back in Germany,great car! I defs get another one!Thanks again for the great video,loved every second of it! Cheers Richard

Cheers Richard! Great that you met him briefly in Oz! I'm hopefully coming over end of the year, I would love to get hold of a demo and drive up the coast showing BMW owners what they're missing haha. Cheers man

Amazing interview mate,2 years later but this was epic and what a humble man.This would of made your day and being in your comfort zone time not an issue. Cheers from Noosa Australia 🇦🇺

Ahh thanks for watching and your kind feedback, was definitely a highlight of my short KZbin journey. When I travelled the East coast back in 99, Noosa was my favorite spot, stayed at a awesome hostel called Koalas, met the best bunch of people who I travelled up to Cape Tribulation with, genuinely best times of my life ❤️

Thank you buddy, it's not had much use since picking up due to business being very quiet and now on hold due to COVID 19, but it will hopefully pick up in a few months again 👌

Your driver was a great 'find'! I have never seen him before, and I've seen lots of Alpina videos before. He's a great brand ambassador for them imo
