I had an E46 Alpina B3 3.3 saloon. An absolutely magnificent straight six bolted to an unreliable cost-engineered pile of junk (early E46s weren't very well made). Factory claimed 276bhp crank, mine made 272 at the wheels with the automatic gearbox. Suspension was sharp yet pliant. Loved it for the way it went, the noise it made, and the way it looked. Hated it for the amount of electrical gremlins and stupid breakages which cost a small fortune to keep it running. Best fault - the sunroof motor catching fire because a clip had fallen off in the sunroof tray, jammed the mechanism, and the motor had no resistance cut off. It just kept trying to move the thing until it overheated and caught fire.

Alpina was always about great handling and comfort compromise. There's an autocar video on KZbin where both Alpina d4 and BMW m3 driving on the same short twisted course. And the diesel Alpina was faster! And it was also more stable!
