Good video and choice of oil. I change my own oil as I don't trust others to do it. Oil change last month by a Honda dealer for my wife's 1 year old accord and they did not tighten the drain plug all the way. Wish I could say this was an isolated incident but have had too many dealer or shop mistakes for me to trust my investments to others. Easier the job = the more reason I should do it myself if I have the time and tooling to do so. Newer vehicles I have tried to have the dealer do it until out of warranty but they are proving to me to not be able to handle even this.

After a terrible experience at Big O that my fiance had I immediately looked up a video on how to do the oil change on it (never done it on this car before) and this is a 15/10 video. I'll be changing her oil this weekend while she's out of town. 5 years later and your video is still helping people out. Keep it up.

Thank you Jonathan for making Toyota Corolla 2010 maintenance videos. Ever since watching your oil change video aka first same car model's maintenance youtube video online I could find, I started my corolla self maintenance journey. It has been a wide ride mostly due to rust bolts and screws. I have changed engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, replaced CV joint boot, rotated tires, and am going to replace spark plugs after 140K miles first time ever. All thanks for your DIY videos that made me think I could do it too. Please keep uploading any car maintenance DIY videos for helping others too! 🙏

This is a nearly perfect video on how to change oil on a 2010 Corolla. Here are some things to consider. Safety first last and always. Wear pants and other clothing to protect your body and hopefully you were wearing shoes instead of flip flops. Hope you were wearing safety glasses. Spend a little money on two pairs of steel wheel chocks and block both sides of the rear wheels. Use jack stand pads to protect the pinch welds. Get the engine up to around operating temperature to help oil drain better. I would not put new oil on the drain plug threads and oil filter canister threads to avoid potential loosening later. I would just clean them thoroughly with a towel. Torque the drain plug and oil filter canister with a torque wrench. Fill the crankcase with oil to four quarts while the vehicle is still jacked up and start the engine. Check both the drain plug and oil filter canister for leaks. Let the vehicle run until it warms up a bit and check the plug and filter canister again. If everything is good, lower the vehicle. Let the engine run until it reaches operating temperature and then shut the engine off. Let the oil drain into the pan for about 15 minutes. Then top off the oil to the full mark by adding oil a little at a time and rechecking the level after about a minute or so. Once you're done, reset the oil life light. Your oil change will be about as good as it gets by doing these additional things and you'll be much safer too. By the way, I really like Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Oil, excellent choice!

@@JohnathansWorld Sure you bet, Jonathan. I've been changing oil and working on cars and trucks for decades. I'm very meticulous on how I do things, and safety is always a top priority. I really liked a lot of the things you did, like using the jack to support the vehicle in addition to the jack stands; using genuine Toyota parts; wiping the oil filter canister out; wiping the mating surface for the oil plug; and using high quality oil. In future videos, I highly recommend focusing on safety in your videos as well as the job. There is no savings if the car falls on you while you're under it or you get hurt in some other way. Anyway, probably more than you ever wanted to know, but I hope my many years of training and experience have helped you and will help others who read my posts.

Thank you for the video Jonathan. Very informative indeed. I would like to add that measuring the oil level before starting the car does not give an accurate measure of the oil level since the filter housing is empty. That’s where the additional .4 quarts of oil go. The manufacturer recommends 4.4 quarts when changing the filter because the filter housing will be empty. Technically there is no need to measure the oil level if the right amount of oil is added at the end (i.e. 4.4 quarts). Once the car is started and the oil is allowed to settle back into the pan (20 minutes or so vice a couple of minutes), the oil level should be right where it needs to be. Thanks!

Thanks for your excellent video. I have changed the oil on my 2010 and 2013 Corollas many times and have found your steps to be the best way to do the job. For example, you raised the front - not only is it easier to change the oil, but this actually allows more oil to drain as the drain hole is not at the bottom of the oil pan. You also replaced the drain plug before you proceeded to changing the filter - instead some DIYers go on to change the filter and forget to put the plug back (until they start adding new oil!) - I've seen this happen more than once. Your emphasis on lubricating the big O-ring on the filter canister is important as the oil allows the O-ring to move into place and not bind up as the canister is screwed in.

Please, anybody who's reading this, remember: ALWAYS make sure you can unscrew your oil filter before you drain the oil. This is especially true if you're not the one who did the car's last oil change (you just got the car or someone else did it last time). If you drain the oil and find that some caveman had screwed the filter on too tight before then you've got yourself a solid "assignment" you'd wish you hadn't.

Agreed, thanks for the tip, I remember when I brought my car home for the first time when I purchased it and I did the oil change at home right away, the oil filter housing was so tight from the factory, I couldn’t get it off, so I took it to my mechanic friend that has a car lift so we could get the housing off the first time.

@@JohnathansWorld, this is a true story: I received an '09 Corolla in (same as yours) from Canada that a relative had purchased on my behalf. The tight filter cap destroyed my Performance Parts filter wrench. I took it to the Ladipo spare parts market (Lagos, Nigeria) and several young men took turns using whatever tool they could get to remove that cap. They were all defeated. In the end the cap had to be slowly roasted off the housing over a charcoal furnace. I mean the cap and the filter inside were burning for over 30 minutes while being slowly chiselled and chipped away. Perhaps the oil filter cap had been welded on or maybe it had never been replaced. I've had to order another cap.

Everyone who has this system should be prepared for a worse case scenario especially if this is the first time you're doing this. In case of a Stuck Oil Filter Make sure you have the following... 1. The proper Motivx* oil filter cap wrench. Item #MX2320 us for all Toyota/Lexus/Scion engines 2.0 liters and larger using a cartridge style oil filter or item #MX2321 is for all engines smaller than 2.0 liters using a cartridge style filter. 2. A 27 mm ½ inch drive socket 3. A ½ drive breaker bar (18 inches or longer in length. An extension may be needed for some models.) If an oil filter cap seems difficult to remove, only the above items should be used (or equivalent tools). Do not simply use a ⅜ inch drive ratchet or ratchet with extension as these will sometimes result in breakage of the oil filter cap wrench or the oil filter cap. Always make sure the teeth on the wrench are properly engaged with the tabs on the oil filter cap. To prevent reoccurrence of the problem •Make sure new o-rings are properly lubricated before installing. •Use a torque wrench to install the oil filter cap to no more than 18 ft.lbs (25 N•m). Oil filter drainplug = 10 ft.lbs. (13 N•m) * If you think the Motivx tools are too expensive at least consider the following... Do not buy an oil filter cap wrench that is made from cast aluminum. Only buy one that is forged. Do not buy one that is strictly a cap wrench that does not have teeth. Do not buy one that claims to fit all models or even all four cylinders. The 2.0 and 2.5 liter four cylinder engines use the same oil filter cap wrenches as the six and eight cylinder engines use. Only the 1.8 and 1.3 liter engines use a different size oil filter cap and oil filter cap wrench. If the oil filter for your four cylinder vehicle comes with one o-ring instead of two then your vehicle takes the same wrench as a Prius or Corolla. If your oil filter comes with two o-rings & a drain tool then your oil filter cap takes the same wrench as the six and eight cylinder engines. Some companies claim their wrench works for all four cylinders but on the 2.5 liter engines that smaller wrench does not engage the teeth on the wrench to the tabs on the oil filter cap. It may work if your oil filter cap is not stuck but it is a poor choice. They are mislead. For those that don't believe this is a problem... kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZ6Qh4B_oLmqbM0

I liked the spin on filters better also, because I used to paint them with red nail polish before paying for an oil and filter change, and that way I could be sure that my filter had actually been changed. Now I furnish the new oil and filter, to a repair shop which has been reliable in the past, and they do it for a labor charge.

J Shepard agree 1000 times!! All this aggravation because Canada, our neighbor , burns them for fuel oil. I live in the south, I don’t use fuel oil . I bought one that was made in Canada and was furious when I got ready to change the oil and had to buy the cartridge .

It’s at 6500 now and the oil only a dark amber color. Beats paying so much for Mobil when all the other oil brands do the job for less.

Steven Sevek Honestly it’s a tossup between those two filters in the Supertech filter, I stopped using the Fram ultra synthetic filter, not because it’s a bad filter but I just got less comfortable going with long intervals, and it’s not worth paying the extra scratch, I’m just gonna change every 5000 miles and use the Supertech filter and oil combo, it’s a $20 oil change that I do myself. Haha. But if there’s a good bundle deal on the OEM Toyota filters, I’d be game for that too.

One further step I would suggest: Use kerosene or similar solvent to rinse out the oil filter housing. Let it drain and dry. And if you want to be extra conscientious, use an air compressor to blow it out. That gets any dirt/dust out for sure; I don't think just wiping a rag or two inside is going to do a 100% cleaning job.

I’m more of a Valvoline guy but figured I’d keep using what he did since it worked for him. My question is this: how long do you usually go between oil changes (I know the oil jug says 15k between changes but I don’t trust it) before the oil turns black and you decide it needs a change? I’m inclined to get the high mileage annual protection but is it worth the extra $4? I also grabbed a case of 10 genuine Toyota filters for $49, glad to see someone else is using the same ones! Thanks in advance!

Hi there, I change my oil at the 5,000 mark sometimes I will let it go a little longer but I make usually have extra oil and will just keep the oil topped off until I get to changing it. But I have been using Mobil one since my first oil change when I purchased the car new and it still runs like new today. Don’t buy the high mileage oil, it’s not worth it, it’s not worth the risk of damaging your engine to save a few dollars. My recommendation is change it every 5,000 miles.
@stevensevek6151
@stevensevek6151 5 жыл бұрын
High mileage oil is best avoided regardless of how many miles are on your engine unless you have leaking seals. I change mine every 5,000 miles mainly to honor the requirements of an extended warranty on our vehicle, otherwise I would likely go with every 7500 to 8000 miles. Just because the oil is black doesn't mean it needs changing. The heat from the engine will darken the oil and the additives in the oil are designed to keep contaminants in suspension which also darkens the oil. But any sizable contaminants will be removed by the filter. Only an oil analysis will tell you if the oil truly needs changing. Still engines are a lot more expensive than oil.

The oil filter should be removed first, because it takes much less time to drain all of the oil out of the filter housing, then it does to drain all of the oil out from the oil pan! I always allow at least one to two hours to drain the oil from the drain plug! This way I get much more of the old oil out then I could, if I only let it drain for say, fifteen minutes!

You can do that, but in the manual, you will notice it will show how much oil capacity to pour with and without the filter. So if you top the oil canister with oil, make sure you are aware how much oil you poured in the canister. You do not want there to be too much oil in the engine.

Well it all happened in 2010 when I took my car to have a oil change for the first time, and it was at Toyota, I attempted to change the oil myself but the oil filter house was on so tight from the factory all my weight couldn’t budge it, so I let Toyota do it, and The next time I went to change it myself, I noticed they bent the tab, so I just left it so for the last 8-9 years, I left it bent and I haven’t had any problems with it coming loose between oil changes, But I make sure it’s on there tight.

The retaining clip does not interfere with changing the oil filter. The only time that becomes a problem is when you're using an improper oil filter cap wrench. Actually there are two main parts to the oil filter housing... The oil filter cap which is the part you remove and is sometimes called the oil filter housing cap or the oil filter assembly cap. The other part is the base of the oil filter housing which is attached to the engine block and which the oil filter cap screws into.

The only time the retaining clip presents a problem is if you bought a wrench that has slots on the bottom of it and it claims to fit all Toyotas. That wrench is too wide at the lower edge where the slots are. So much so that the slots don't even engage with the tabs on the oil filter cap. It works fine on Toyota built engines with the cartridge system that are larger than 1.8 liters.
