Thanks a lot for this! I also watched another similar video that showed the owner taking out the ATF pan and replacing the Automatic transmission filter! Taking out the old gasket, cleaning up the magnets inside, and replacing the new filter and gasket! I may just do that anyway! I own a 2011 Tacoma! Brought it used back in 2020, I did the rear dif, transfer case, and front diff fluid changes myself, just haven't done the transmission fluid yet! I'm going to do it this month!

In most cases changing the filter is not necessary. The normal particles are so small they mostly stay suspended in the fluid. With regular fluid changes you are removing the gunk. If however, it’s older with higher miles is definitely not a bad idea. You will most certainly find some gunk on the magnet and be able to wipe some off the bottom of the pan.

Per Toyota it’s 60-100k miles dependent on how the vehicle is used. And fluid temp should NOT exceed 115F…. It’s 97f-115f

It took 2 months to get my trans cooling lines from Toyota and another month waiting for good weather to replace them. Lol. Quick question. If you are unsure of the transmission fluid level (because of the leaky cooling lines, which I replaced). Can you add fluid to the fill port until it starts to overflow through the overflow port (cold) and then do the procedure to check the proper level? I just want to top it up as I am unsure how much might of leaked out. Thanks for any input. Cheers!

Bennie , very informative video. I have a 09 Tacoma and getting ready to go do to mine what you did ! One question for you , have you ever had problems with either of the transmission cooler lines? I have lines that have rusted and temporarily spliced in a hose to repair until I had the chance to replace both rear lines to the front of the truck then go and do a drain and fill from that point. I have a 2008 Toyota Tacoma with 299000 miles it just hit and I’m about to change the fluid on it since my rear output seal is leaking the color looks dark should I just drain it and then fill it and go on my way or should I drive it a couple of miles and then drain it again and refill it. The truck shifts smooth smooth still before changing it never changed it before since i bought with 200000 miles on it

It’s probably not a bad idea to do a couple drain and fills if it’s in fact pretty dirty. You can probably do them back to back without even driving the truck. The new and old fluid will mix quickly.

I think it was about 10 minutes. Do some online searching, I think there is a way to jumper a couple pins in the OBD2 port to actually have a light come on and tell you when the trans is in the temp range. I am unfamiliar with that method but that sounds like it might be a good option for you.

This was my first digital torque wrench and I love it! It also has a setting for degrees, if you ever do TTY bolts, and it's so easy to use!! I have the 1/2" and the 3/8" versions. I've had them for a couple years and feel like they were a really good choice.

I don’t think it’s over filled. It’s possible I could have drained an additional ounce or 2 out but it would have had a very minimal effect. There is an acceptable range, just like with a dip stick. If drain out every possible drop at the highest acceptable trans temp it would be at the lower end of the acceptable level range, and if you stop draining before every last drop at the lowest acceptable trans temp you would be at the top of the acceptable level range. I have seen so many completely out of range fluid levels over the years that if you even half way try on these things you will fall in the range and be in great shape. *Edit* If you look up the meaning of “trickle”: “(Of a liquid) flow in a small stream”

It’s really not bad. Everyone’s first question is how can I do it differently. It drives me mad! There is a reason this is how Toyota recommends to service it. If you don’t know it’s currently at the correct level, measuring what you take out will not get you back to the correct level. It will only get it back to whatever level it happened to start at, if you measure correctly. If it is at the correct level and you measure incorrectly same problem!

I'm due for my transmission fluid change. I'm sure you're aware of the controversy of "Full Flush" vs a simple "Drain & Fill" and which is the correct way. After my own research and asking several mechanic friends myself, doing a simple Drain & Fill is the best way to go. What do you recommend? Btw if your fluid looks a bit dark could I also do a Drain & Fill several times to achieve a more "Reddish" color? Any input is greatly appreciated and awesome video!

I’m well aware of the controversy. :) I have personally never had an issue with a flush and wouldn’t recommend against them, but everyone needs to research and make their own decision. Doing a drain and fill several times is definitely not a bad idea if the fluid it dark. After the first time you’ll be able to knock it out pretty quickly. Thanks for watching!

If it’s especially dirty (Brownish) than yeah, so an extra drain and fill 15 minutes later after driving it around the block after doing your first drain and fill, reslly no need to flush the entire transmission. 👍🍺

I did the same on my 2010 tacoma and a little trickle came out of the standpipe instead of almost a full quart like your did. Either there wasn't enough fluid to begin with or 1 gallon wasn't enough. As long as it trickled out a little there should be enough right?

I'm the second owner of my 2015 Tacoma V6. If I don't know what brand of transmission fluid is in the transmission, can I use any fluid that is WS compatible? Don't know if the prior owner changed fluid and if he did, there's no way of me knowing what brand was used. So if there was Toyota WS fluid in the transmission and I used aftermarket fluid, is that ok for a drain in fill?

IMHO I wouldn't worry about it at all. I haven't heard of, or experienced any issues as long as you use the correct type (WS). I would personally be more worried about the alternative of not doing it and running old dirty fluid instead.

I have a 2010 with 128k miles and was going to do the drain and fill. Someone is telling me not to do that because the detergents in the new fluid can lift up gunk in the pan and cause problems, and that the whole pan needs to be removed and cleaned to be safe. The truck runs 100% now and i dont want to mess it up. I dont know what to do

Personally I wouldn’t be worried about doing this service on your truck, but if that “someone” is a local expert familiar with your truck then you should absolutely listen to them over some guy with a KZbin video. :)

@@craftmansnapon8035, While I can't make you any promises on this, and I obviously know nothing about your specific Tacoma, I can say this: I have been servicing transmissions since the 90's and I have not once encountered a problem after servicing. I have in fact resolved issues that other shops diagnosed as being a bad transmission that needed to be replaced. Now I am sure it's happened at some point to somebody, but I have a feeling that all these people saying you'll damage it have had no personal experience, or had pre existing issues, or did something wrong with the service. These transmissions are simply failing because people are servicing them correctly. Proceed with whatever you feel most comfortable with.

I almost always agree with that. If the fluid is just dirty and not chunky or really metallic then fluid only. Plus, if it is that bad you have bigger issues.

I'm sure 10 different people will give you 10 different answers. :) Here's mine: If you keep clean fluid in it you can probably never change it. If you wanted to be cautious I would say change it every 100K-120K miles. My reasoning is that the filter doesn't filter out the very small particles that a transmission produces under normal circumstances. They are too small and stay suspended in the fluid, or captured by the magnet. Changing the fluid and cleaning the magnet, where applicable, will get them out of the system. If you actually have large particles getting captured by the filter you have bigger problems. Toyota recommends “replacing your transmission fluid every 60K miles.” They are unclear on what quantity. Since this is the procedure on this vehicle I’m deducting from that, that this procedure should be done every 60K miles. I certainly would tell you not to do it more frequently, you can interpret their recommendations as you see fit. On a practical level, I would recommend more frequently changing it if it looks particularly dark. If it looks great then I’d say you could extend it longer.

I have a 2007 Toyota Tacoma double cab trd sport 4 L V-6 with a five speed automatic transmission. Good video, but all you did is drain 1/3 of the fluid. I had the full service done on mine years ago. I believe I paid $179 at Pep Boys. They started off by removing the pan, and cleaning the inside of it, along with the magnets, replaced the gasket and the filter. After reattaching the pan, they did a complete transmission fluid exchange 12 quarts. Then checked the level. They used a fully synthetic transmission fluid which is compatible with my transmission. No issues. I will be doing it again this year. I change my own engine oil and filters, but I don’t mess with the transmission. I wouldn’t save any money doing it myself.

@@michaelcinaz , that’s correct, this video covers a drain and refill only. It doesn’t cover dropping the pan or doing a flush. I personally am not against flushes but it won’t take you much searching online to open up that controversial topic. The transmission services I do are usually more based on the color of the fluid and less on the miles. If the fluid is very dark I will recommend a more aggressive service. Thanks for watching!

Personally, I would have put the stand pipe plug in a little sooner when the fluid dripping (after the steady stream) changed from dribbling down the center of the tube to where it just started to go off to the side of the hole. An exact procedure from a fluid temp standpoint but kind of unclear as to what the definition of a trickle is. Just my opinion. Should have stuck with tried and tested dipstick technique used for decades.

I wish they had dipsticks as well. As far as how much to drain, think of it like this. If you pour an excessive amount of water in to a cup sitting on your countertop, all the excess water will overflow and spill out of the cup. When it stops spilling out how full is the cup? Completely full. That’s how it works in these transmissions as well. You cannot drain too much fluid out. Anything you drain is excess fluid.

Thanks for responding so quickly. What I'm envisioning inside the pan is, for lack of a better description, a lake with slight waves due to the turbulence of the transmission running and you are seeing an average of this when the overflow is occurring at the top of the stand pipe and then exiting out. And the other factor is that the longer you wait for the dripping, the fluid is getting hotter (expanding). An interesting scenario. 🙂@@bennieaust

@@richardcarlson3627 you’re welcome! I think you’re right on all that, but I’d venture to guess that they’ve accounted for things like that in their procedure. Technically those variables would also effect a reading on a dip stick. And to be fair there is also an acceptable range on a dip stick, not an exact level it must be at. I think this is the same thing. Of course they didn’t ask me about it when they were writing the procedure so I can’t verify that for sure. :) If the temp is way higher than called for I would expect incorrect level, but if properly followed I wouldn’t be too worried about it.

Exenty, I posted a link on where to purchase the scanner so that’s one option. If you are wondering how to do this without purchasing a scanner there is a process where you can jumper out a couple of the obd2 port pins but I am not familiar with it so you would have to do a search to figure out that method. For me, I can’t do what I do without a pretty capable scanner so I obviously use a scanner.

I cover that at 6:38 in the video. The gauge you’re referring to is the engine temp, not the trans temp. I believe there is another way to have a dash light come on when you get to the correct temp by jumping a couple pins together on the OBD2 port. I’m not personally familiar with that method though.
