Excellent video!! I'll add that you should do the drain and replace process several times until the fluid is clean. It usually takes 3-4 times. Also, clean the area around all the plugs before you open them. You don't want all the dirt and crap on the outside getting inside the transmission.

You really need to do this drain & refill process a number of times until your fluid is clean meaning the dark colour has gone. I found i had to do mine 4 times to get it clean. Also an easier way to take your correct temp reading of the fluid ( between 97F-115F) for getting its desired fluid level right is using a handheld lazor temp gun shooting for 100F as the fluid will be slightly hotter than the metal pan which the gun takes the reading from. Good idea to replace the drain plug crush sealing ring with a new one on the last refill as the original will be flattened out for sure and could seap

It depends, the A/T temp light will come on if you have enough fluid in the transmission and after you’ve kept the truck running up to operating temp give or take. For me it was about 5-10 mins if I remember correctly.

I’m no expert so use this at your own discretion; as far as I’m aware- yes you can. Just be mindful not to OVERFILL. Check out this read on TacomaWorld: www.tacomaworld.com/threads/proper-method-for-checking-the-transmission-fluid-level.465949/ You’ll have to scroll through but there’s some helpful info there closer to your year of Tacoma. @OutdoorTaco4 ай бұрын
Twice wouldn’t hurt- again I’m no expert so take that as you will. I figure with higher mileage and depending on how your old fluid looks; doing this ‘refresh’ multiple times would be a great maintenance for your transmission. Again, see how you feel about it after seeing the condition of the current old fluid that’s in there now. I hope this was helpful! Thank you for tuning in!

I never could get the transmission light to come on. Ran it to get up to temp. Had more come out of overflow than expected. Is this normal?
@OutdoorTaco3 ай бұрын
If you did NOT see any fluid come out of the overflow I’d be worried- so that’s a positive!💪😁 but again as mentioned I’m no expert however I found that depending on how warm your truck is/was before starting this process is what will have an effect on that light. That being said, as long as you followed the instructions in the video; and feel free to check out the TacomaWorld write-up in the description (shifting in and out of N-D back to park) and some fluid came out of the overflow- you’re good to go. I hope this helped! Let me know if there’s anything else I can help with!

Did you warm up the truck before draining or drain when truck is cold?

My truck was somewhat warm, to do this the truck can start in any temp. However a warm truck means warm fluid might drain quicker. Hope this helps!💪

Can i do this on my 2009 Tacoma? The thing under the dash on mine that i have to put the paper clip in is black instead of white like yours, will it operate the same? Also I’m going to do the full trans filter replacement too since I’m about to hit 150k miles
@benjamincarter40877 ай бұрын
Also how much “extra fluid” did you put in once you were done filling the trans to seal the overflow and check while the truck is running and hot
@OutdoorTaco7 ай бұрын
Yes it should work the same on your OBD connector and the paper clip. I mentioned I put in about a 1/3 of a quart extra in the transmission as to help with the temp check and assure the truck had enough fluid in there after a temp check was complete. Good luck with your project! I hope this was helpful!

@@OutdoorTaco thank you so much! Excited to get mine done, i bought my truck at 133k miles and im almost at 150k, the truck had regular maintenance before i bought it and the truck and transmission runs like a dream. I just figured I’d do a complete tune up and I’m not sure if the filter has been replaced or when the last time the fluid was replaced. I’m getting the tiniest little burnt smell from the truck every once in a while, nothing ever overheats, nothing comes on in the dash, just figured maybe fresh trans fluid and a filter wouldn’t hurt. Also Do you think the filter is necessary to be changed at all or is that overkill?
@OutdoorTaco7 ай бұрын
Nice work! I had a similar situation; bought mine at 120k, and as you’ll see on my channel, I’ve just been replacing all the fluids and making sure I can have this truck running forever👍 I think you’re good to replace the filter if you’re up for it, I didn’t replace mine just because I didn’t have the time, I plan on it eventually but ya know..life is busy🤷♂️😂

I worked on my 2013 tacoma and when I unscrewed the overflow, about 2 quarts of transmission fluid came out and the transmission was cold. When I jumped the OBD 2, the A/T temp light never came on. I had it on for like 15 mins or more and never flashed or came on. I drove it around on the freeway, came home, and jumped the OBD 2 and, still, the light didn't come on.
@OutdoorTaco3 ай бұрын
Did you shift from N-D as described in the video as well as the TacomaWorld write-up linked in the description? Did the dash lights blink like a Christmas tree like I mentioned when you jumped the OBD and then turned the key on? Again I’m no expert I just love DIY project and sharing my experience😁 But It sounds like you’re good to go fluid level wise. As for the AT/TEMP light, watch it for the next little while. If it comes on you know you need to do the AT-temp-check-mode reset again. If it doesn’t come on, I think you’re fine.

@OutdoorTaco9 ай бұрын
The timing has to be so perfect and it is somewhat frustrating, I apologize for not saying that in the video. It took me three or four attempts and I still missed it🤦♂️😂 however, with enough patience and attempts I promise it’ll come on as long as the OBII connection is jumped properly and shifts are done with the proper timing in between, I think it’s like 1-2 seconds in between shifts, and if you miss the timing it won’t trigger the temp-check-mode. Keep trying you got this!💪

@donh822310 ай бұрын
Why can't you simply put the same exact amount back in? Hope that's not a stupid question lol
@OutdoorTaco10 ай бұрын
Great question! Putting a little extra in allows the truck to properly check temperature and also use it as an indicator when removing the overfill plug when the truck is idling; that the transmission now has the proper level of fluid in while RUNNING. Hope this helps!
@OutdoorTaco10 ай бұрын
To go along with that I had a colleague put in the exact amount and when it came to removing the overfill plug nothing came out😅 AND the temp check light on the dash started blinking (meaning it was too hot or the truck couldn’t get a reading) so he had to let the engine cool, put a little extra in, do the whole temp check process again, and after removing the overfill plug a trickle came out, letting him know he had properly finished the service. Thank you for asking though that was a great question!
@jamescole8937 ай бұрын
Because when you drive and idea the fluid gets pushed through the transmission. So since there's some in the transmission afterwards that means there is less in the reservoir afterwards. That's why you put more inx because you aren't actually putting more then you had in you're just replacing the fluid you didn't see because it was in the trany
