2011-2017 Ram 1500/2500 9" Apple CarPlay Upgrade for $160!! Is it worth it?

In this video I show how to upgrade the stock radio in my 2015 Ram 1500 Laramie to a bigger screen with wireless apple CarPlay/ android auto. I am not a professional installer, just a guy that likes to tinker with projects.

EDIT** After messing with the radio, the only issue I have encountered is that the temperature display for HVAC will only show in Celsius. When I change it in the setting to Fahrenheit, it will only display "low" or "hi" so I am not sure exactly what temp I am setting the cabin to. Everything works fine, its just the temp display.

Hey I just brought this unit. The only issue I’m having is my gps is not working unless it’s connected to my phone. Are you having this issue. I moved the gps antenna towards the dash/window more! Where did you position yours?

I actually didn’t hook up the gps on this as I knew I would only be using my phone with Apple CarPlay for GPS.

@@millerspowerhouse Gotcha, I ended up hooking it up cause if I don't have my phone I want the gps to work still or if I have a family member drive it. But after hooking it up, It works just fine. So that issue is resolved. Also I downloaded the whole state map for offline use and tested it out, GPS works great

With this upgrade do you still have access to the USB port in the center console? I seen a different video where a guy replaced his radio and the company sent him a board to replace in the USB port so it would still work. I have a 2015 tradesman but I imagine it should work the same as yours. Thank you

Yes the usb port seems to still work. I don’t really use mine for anything other than charging my phone, which still works. And when I plug my phone in the screen recognizes that.

Any updates after using this for a while? One complaint I read was the built in mic was trash and wondered if you found that to be the case.

Yes the mic sounds like you are under water, I’d recommend the plug in mic it comes with. Temperature for climate control does not read in Fahrenheit either, just “low” and “high” which makes setting the temp you want difficult. Other than that it works very well for the money.

How are the speakers ive heard that the output on the unit make the speakers sound aweful is that true? Or does it sound like factory?

Speakers sound great actually. The bass is good. My truck has the alpine factory stereo and speakers and I have no complaints with sound quality at all.

Do you still have access to trailer brake settings? What about aux input?

my truck does not have trailer brakes so I can't speak to that unfortunately
