Really helpful video great focus on each part of the process, most diy people would feel confident of success after your instruction,the only thing I would add is something I’ve done in the past that is to remove the brake reservoir cap before starting and use a paper kitchen towel to soak up some of the fluid before starting, making sure you have the correct one to top if necessary when finished, thus avoiding any spillage. Good but you need to apply brake grease in the 2 slots where the pads slide inwards and outwards. To avoid squeaks and to avoid binding.

7:30 I unscrew the caliper bleeder a half turn or so when compressing the caliper piston. This evacuates the fluid that has been in the caliper for years instead of pushing it back up into the system. Then top off the brake fluid reservoir.

The front brakes will be 99% similar on the G30 with the only exception being the size of the bolts. They will be of the same bolt head style, just could be different sized sockets is all. If they are are sport brakes or m package brake, then those are completely different. If I get a customer that has one come in, I will definitely make a video.

Dont forget to loosen that lid on the brake master cylinder before pushing pack the caliper.

Great video! Probably the best one about doing brakes on anF30. Do you HAVE to replace the sensor? My understanding is that it is basically a wire that wares through when the brakes get to a certain point, so if you replace the pads before that, you might not need to replace the sensor and save a few bucks...

Luke Kondratowicz No you do not have to replace the sensor. Only if the brakes have worn down considerably (metal on metal) you will notice that the sensor gets destroyed. If you can get the small metal clip and sensor out of the old brake pad without breaking it you’re good to reuse it.

Yes the fixed piston brake calipers are MUCH easier than the sliding calipers on the bmws. Fixed calipers are easy on everything.

Great video! So it would be the same process on 2014 320i? I assume since it is a f30 it would be the same. Took my daughters bmw to the dealer and was told the front breaks needs to be replaced along with rotors and sensor. How do known if the rotor needs to be replaced? The car only has 57k miles. Also did you not need to use grease on the back of the pads? Did you not need to use a torque wrench?

It would be very similar yes. Rotors are these cars are designed to be changed with the pads. You might be able to get away with just doing the pads sometimes. However if you notice the very outside of the rotor face (the shiny part) there begins to be a very hard lip on the edge. If you just slap on new pads. Sometimes it’s ok but other times they will squeak and keep on squeaking. It would be wise to change rotors as well if you can afford it. If you can’t now well hey that’s life and you do what you can do. New brake pads will ALWAYS be better than nothing. But make sure you replace the rotors the next time around. PLEASE note: my personal recommendation is to replace pads and rotors. No grease on the back of the pads. Some people (older people and younger kids taught by older people) still put grease on the back of pads. Some pads still require this step. However 95% of brake pads made today have backing plates or pads to reduce noise. If there is nothing on the back of the pads you get, then use grease. I am sure there are torque specs around on the internet. I have been doing brakes for years. Not once have I used a torque wrench. I use a torque wrench when tightening the lug nuts but that’s it ons brake job. I get them nice and snug and that it plenty.

You most certainly can do the rotors if they have significant wear on them or have large scoring on them.

Brilliant video, my warning light came on so I ordered a new set. Went to change the pads but they was done less than a year ago so thought it was odd, when I looked at the pads they weren't even 3/4 worn down. Check the connectors for the wear sensors and make sure they didn’t come loose. If they look good, Replace the wear sensors and see if the problem persists.

Something is loose or not placed right. Try to figure out which side and take it apart again to see what’s wrong. Chances are it will present itself

Mark C Yes you can use multi purpose grease. Mine is valvoline brand and it’s red. I use it all the time on the slide pins and bearings.

Hi, I did the same job as you did. I even used the same Akebono pads from fcoeuro. Every thing went well. I have two questions. 1. What is the thin wire or cable into the wheel in addition to the sensor, the brake hydraulic line? 2. The brake rotor gets much hotter than the rear brake rotors. I just did the front only. The rear brakes were not worked by me. Again I did the same work as you did for the front brakes. Is is normal for the rotors get hot? Thank you in advance.

Mark C 1. I assume you’re talking about the brake wear sensors? They are copperish color and push into the back of the brake pads? OR you are talking about the ABS wheel speed sensor wire. 2. Yes it is normal for brake rotors to get hot. That is their job to convert kinetic energy into thermal energy.

Yes if they have severe grooves on them or not. Minimum rotor thickness is normally stamped right onto the rotor hat.

Sam Page I wouldn’t say they give better bite than O.E. pads. I will say 100% less dusting. That matters to me as I don’t want to be cleaning my rims every two days (O.E. pads) I could go almost 2 weeks without these pads dusting. They offer very similar performance to OE pads.

Modern high quality pads have a backing that doesn't require lube, but you still need to apply a dab on the pad ears where they contact the caliper and slide back and forth

Helping Hand Auto Repair Nevermind. Your video was very helpful. Just finished brakes. The only think is that for my caliper bolts I needed an Allen wrench to remove bolts. The easiest way is to used an Allen wrench socket. I was thinking it was a standard socket but I realized you need an Allen wrench to remove caliper bolts. Overall well done. You made mechanics lose profit because I did this myself. 😂

Always do from the farthest to the closest from the master cylinder. The passenger side should have been done first.

Scrat over Negative, it doesn’t matter which you do first. If you were bleeding the system then you are correct. However nothing is being bled.

holly molly, where are your jack pads man, also you can use a turkey baster or similar items from amazon to extract the break fluid, you don't want any of that on your engine bay. You also need grease and tread locker.

Mr. Pabs My jack pads are attached to the car, like all other BMW and Mercedes are. Never needed a turkey Baster, thread locker on caliper bolts you will regret. Grease on the back of the pads? Grease on the slide pins you can.
