Great video, just came here to say IF anybody strips out the 6mm nut that retains the rotor: a T45, a hammer and some WD40 works great. That's what my neighbor did to save my bacon. After smashing the T45 into the enlarged 6+mm hole it backed right out using my 3/8" socket wrench. 👍

No brake grease on the pad to caliper sliding surfaces - they will squeak. No grease on the guide pins - Oops........

Great video. Very helpful. Just curious why the guide pins and ears of the brake pads were not lubricated before reinstalling them? My BMW dealer just quoted me $1800 to replace the pads and rotors (all 4)! I’ve ordered the parts from FCPEuro and going to do it myself. Since the car has 60k on it I’m also going to replace the guide pins and bushings. Cost of parts is under $450.

I first learned how to do brakes on my E92 328 after watching your video for that model and the procedure is the same. So it should go a lot quicker this time around on the F30 328 I now own. Was thinking how you skipped greasing the pads and guide pins which would be helpful to those who are doing this for the first time. Otherwise thanks again for the DIY library that makes maintaining a BMW much less costly.

Yes, it’s best practice to apply a bit of synthetic lube to the pins and the ears of the brake pads.

Looking at a Bentley manual for E90 (very similar) it mentions specifically to lube the pad ears. It also specifically mentions NOT to lube the slide pins which is interesting.

One question it is necessary to change the disk each times when to change the break pad?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 4 ай бұрын
Hi Mario, While you can definitely just replace the brake pads, typically if the pads are very worn and old, there is a chance the discs are also in rough shape, which is why we always recommend replacing them at the same time.

I am replacing the front brakes on my BMW 335D F30 Xdrive. The old disks have a ring of metal studs in the hub but the replacements do not. I cannot find any information on these studs so I am not sure if they are needed. Any idea's ?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 6 ай бұрын
Some of the factory discs had a two-piece design, with the hubs being "riveted" to the discs. You can use the Zimmerman one-piece replacements like the ones used in this DIY.
@JerryWalker001

@@fcpeuro Thanks, Yes I figured it out once I cleaned up one of the old disks. The hub is light alloy to save weight. The replacements are one piece and are around 0.5kg heavier but they did fit perfectly. Thanks again.

@@fcpeuro Hi, It sounds like you know about BMW's so I hope you don't mind me asking the following question. My car failed MOT with a suspected fuel tank leak (Its an F30 335D). They wanted £400+ to fix it and possibly £2000 for a new tank. I decided to tackle it myself. I opened up the access panel under the rear seat so I could see the top of the fuel pump in the tank. There is a single electrical plug and two fuel lines (feed and return). There is also what appears to be a closed off barbed pipe connector protruding from the top of the pump and the fuel is leaking out of the tip of that but only when the engine is running. Do you know what that connector is for and can I just block it off?

Hi, would you disconnect the battery first be for disconnecting the brake wear calliper sensor,? I ask because disconnecting an electrical part on some cars would it think the part is no longer working and come up as a fault code, Also if I disconnect the battery would i have to have the garage reprogram the car to the battery, as ive heard this with some BMW? why did you not apply any silicon grease to the slide pins

You definitely don't want to break the plastic inserts. I imagine you've done this already, how'd it go? I used my hands, to feel where under the front there is a solid area to lift, as the cover stops me from seeing where is best. There's a few videos on how to jack up your F30 which helps.

does it matter if the inboard and outboard brakes are seperated or not ??? on the 330i g20 the pads do not have clips's and i installed 2 outboard pads on passenger side and 2 inboard pads on the driver side ( this side has the wear sensor and the pads have a slot for the sensor .with some type of metal backing on the shime . ) the other brakes have a slot with no metal backing and a sensor does not fit in them. when i test drove the car it made a bad squeak noise. when i took the brakes off im pretty sure thats how they were installed to begin with. im not 100 percent sure .

did you loosen the wheel lugs with a breaker bar before lifting the car, or did you just hit'm with the impact wrench? Thanks.
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, the Milwaukee impact we have in the shop breaks them free and removes them all in one shot. However, if you do not have an impact, you want to break the lugs free first with a breaker bar before raising the vehicle so as to not put any additional stress on the drivetrain.

Do you tighten your lugs firm, with either a breaker bar, or impact wrench, then lower fully to the ground to torque or just so their touching the ground, but not a lot of weight on them? I'm reading conflicting info elsewhere. Thanks.

Super late to the party, but just get the lugs snug with any tool. I use an electric drill. Lower then get them done with your torque. 95lbs for BMW 3 series.

Dumb question - growing up I was always told to open the cap on the brake reservoir before trying to push back the piston. #1 to make it easier, #2 I was told you would otherwise damage the brake master cylinder or associated components. Any truth to this?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 2 жыл бұрын
Robert, it is always a good idea to open it up, mainly to avoid over pressurizing the reservoir. If it is overfull before compressing any of the pistons in, it is recommended to pull some out of the reservoir, and then top off after you have completed your brake job.

I've gotten lucky once or twice, but the plastic of the old ones gets hard, and they tend to fracture when you try to install them into the new pads. Then you have to spend the time to go get one, when you could have had it handy....Feeling lucky?

No lift required. Any video done using a lift on our channel is as equally doable using a jack and some jack stands on a flat surface. We use a lift for the sake of giving viewers the best view of the work being done as possible. If you need instruction on how to properly and safely jack up your car to service it, you can always find it in your owners manual! If you have any questions in regards to that we would be happy to help.

I did the job yesterday using a trolley jack and axle stands. If you're not comfortable using that equipment then it's probably not a job for you. Excellent video. I estimate it took me 1.5 hours ( but I also spent some of that time taking measurements of worn discs and pads, so possibly an hour's job)
