@@beetlejuice6009 I'd imagine he uses the "coffee can" as a small catch basin that is slid right under the filter to contain the oil and not let it drip/run down the factory spillway. Now that these coffee containers are mostly plastic, it would be even easier to trim to fit than the old metal cans. Seems like a cheap and easy answer with even less clean up. I'm in!

Mechanics that take this sort of care are rare. I had a couple “free” oil changes thrown in with a new car purchase, and foolishly let the local dealer do it. Hey, it’s free oil I figured… The free oil wasn’t I think worth the effort to drain out the overfilled oil, and clean up all the oil spilled everywhere. And find some replacement bolts for the under tray that fell off on the way home…

Thanks for the tip. I just did my first oil change on my 2015 3.5 F150. it use to be with coupons it was just a few dollars more to have an oil change shop do it. now I am saving enough to make it worth it, Used the correct rated API oil and learned about your filter tip. I have been a mechanic on aircraft, cars, boats , and motorcycles since 1975. The most important lesson I learned is: when you think you know it all your just beginning to learn. I made a oil deflector so when the oil pan plug is removed it directs the oil to the drain pan and off the truck components. your tip makes it even a better process. I like your straight forward useful content. Its appreciated.

I have a Ford F150 and due to time, decided to take my truck to a Take 5 service center for an oil change. My son use to be a regional manager for the company and gave me some hints to watch for. The service went off without a hitch - and they hit all the "points" my son said to watch for. Fast forward a week and I'm under the truck putting a heat shield around the starter when I see something hanging under the truck. Closer inspection and it's four red rags that were shoved under the filter - I learned later to catch any dripping oil when the filter is removed. The rags according to my son are part of the cleanliness technique for front oil filters but they are suppose to removed when the service is done. My son told me to keep them and on my next oil change go back and before they started the service, hand them the rags, say thanks for keeping my truck clean, but could you remove them this time when you're done. He added I had a 50% chance of getting a free oil change. Well, time is quickly approaching so we'll see.

2 thumbs up!!! It would be nice if every service tech to the care to be neat and clean with customer's vehicles. We owned 6 vehehicles total at our home a few years back. Took every one to the local Ford dealer for service. Every time we picked one of them up from a service, there was oil and/or grease on the exterior or interior. Every time. I asked that they be clean - no help. I complained to the service manager - no help. That's when I starting doing all the services myself. I already had the tools and the shop area, just not the time. Anyway.... Thanks for your videos. Good Job! And, after years of using the same oil brand I switched from Mobil 1 5W-20 to Valvoline Extended Protection 5W-20 because of your TikTok videos.

I miss my 1997 F150 (or any vehicle with a vertically mounted filter like our 7.3Ls) with the oil filter in the fender well. Easy peasy oil changes. Now it’s like the filter location is an afterthought and a lot of them are horizontal mounted. I’ve relocated a lot of horizontal filters to vertical using racing oil lines and remote filter adapters and filter mounts. Problem is those kits aren’t available in a lot of sizes, it’s mostly trucks that they fit. Vertical mounted is not as messy and gives you the option to prefill the filter w/ oil.

I live on a gravel road. I usually take a garden hose to the drip pan the day before I change oil just to get the dust out of it. Otherwise it drips for 24 hours after the oil change.

Do yourself a favor and install an adjustable type Fumoto drain valve which allows you to control the direction and flow of oil from the oil pan. It’s easy when you open the valve the oil pan can easily be situated so the oil drains directly into the hole in drain pan without any spattering. If you have frame structures in the way you can add a drain tube to valve and direct oil away from any obstacles. Also no more removing/reinstalling drain plugs anymore. Have one in my 2016 f-150 3.5 ecoboost and in my 2004 Mustang GT, work perfect and have never leaked a drop!

The real problem occurs when the truck isn't perfectly level when removing the oil filter (which is the case for most people). What usually happens is that the oil goes all over the top of the skid plate and drips in 20 different directions for days after an oil change. Your attention to detail is great in the IDEAL situation, and I do appreciate the tip. However, Ford and their "engineers" really botched this design though. Thankfully, with some shade-tree "engineering" I was able to 100% mitigate the infamous F-150 oil filter issue by remotely relocating the filter to a vertical orientation...no $200,000 engineering degree required.

Good tip. It seems even when you do the method shown in the video you can still have drips of oil if you aren't super careful, I wish the oil would just naturally flow to the drain in the front it would be so much easier. I like that the filter location is in a super easy spot but at this point I would rather have a cartridge filter like the 2.7. I bought a flexible oil funnel to help direct the oil flow it helps a lot to prevent making a mess

When a vehicle leaves my stall I never have drips because I make sure it is super clean before it leaves. It's just a matter of how clean you want to be and it only takes a couple extra seconds to be cleaner

@@FordBossMe So do I that's why I hated changing oil on these things when I was at a shop that worked on all makes and models lol. Took too long to get it perfectly clean but I did it. I bought the flexible funnel for my truck and honestly I wish I did it sooner, it's a neat tool

The 07 Dodge Dakota with a 3.7L a bit of a funnel tray under the oil filter. I love it makes it nice and clean up is easy. The only thing that takes a little is cleaning a crossmember below the drain plug. My little pick up. 🤣

That’s a great tip. Obvious now that I think of it but I’ve made a mess myself before

Not gonna lie... I've done it both ways and it does make a mess if you're in a hurry. Thanks for sharing this! Worst is when you're super careful and then drop the filter. LOL

that's why I always drain it first so I don't get that spill back and drop it

Just got a 2012, I appreciate this video because I'm about to do my first oil change on it and I damn sure would have unscrewed and pulled out the oil filter and made a damn mess, lol.

I bought one 6 months ago and doing my first oil change on it tomorrow, good tips! I wish my brake clean functioned more like a chihuahua watering the flowers than like a pressure washer.
