2012 FORD F-350 FUEL GAUGE NOT WORKING

Today I'm working on a 2012 Ford F-350 Super Duty flatbed with a 6.2 V8. Customer complaint is that the fuel gauge is not working. It shows fuel Level empty at all times. The check engine light is on and has a code P0463. I just wanted to share with you guys my process for diagnosing or troubleshooting problems like this. I did find this design to work differently than I'm used to seeing on most vehicles. Anyway, I hope you find this video useful and the information valuable. Had this problem for 5 years with my 2013 raptor, took it to a small mechanic shop in town, it took him 4 days to diagnose the problem and finally fix it. Theres 3 big main harness plugs in the driver side kick panel, the one that the sending unit wires are in was not plugged in all the way(3/16” gap). But the locking tab was locked on the harness plug(still a gap big enough to not connect tightly) now my fuel guage works perfectly.

Interesting story, the dealers manual was clearly inadequate. Thanks for posting the after-fix scope view! As you guessed, evidently the 13V reference input has a PWM pattern, with peak and average voltage knocked further down by the voltage drop at the level sensor. I would have spent hours on this one, time you clearly didn't have. It might still have been easy if they had offered a normal ohm range for the level sensor. As suggested below, a substitute rheostat might have shown normal sweep for the gauge before dropping the tank. Great demo.

Realise I'm a little late on this but on Ford's I would have done a gauge sweep test and looked at the fuel level % with a scanner if pid is available

I’ve been doing this for years and most of the time I can get to the fuel gauge sending unit and unplug it so the circuit is open and with the key on it should read full or empty then short the sending unit wires together where you unplugged it on the harness not the unit with a paper clip and it will show the opposite of what you saw the first time. If that works it has to be the sending unit which 8 or 9 times out of 10 it will be anyway 9:51

I have same issue with my 2004 ford f-150. I too though it be easier to replace the fuel pump assembly, unfortunately my fuel gauge still not working . I can't smog my truck because the check engine light is on and the only code I get is the fuel lever sensor PO463. I tried many things I seen on you tube and I had no luck...that being said I really appreciate everyone Sharing their ideas , I will share my issue if I every fix it.

@@hamstermegametal Si Victor Tambien le instale el cluster , que es todo los Los gauges para estar seguro que la Abuja del gas funsionaba. Pero mi problema era un cable . El que conectas ala fuel assembly . Check wire harness que conect al fuel assembly. Si no te esplique bien disculpa, avisame I intantire otras ves.

good decision Eric service information very vague the olny thing i can think of if your Snap on vantage had component test for the level sensor and gave you a ohm spec for sender full and empty and using a variable resistor to get the needle to move all the best

Possibly could have hooked a decade box between the two wires from the cluster and moved the resistor up and down to test the fuel level sensor before dropping the tank

All that matters is that you found the problem and fixed it! Sometimes the data can only do just so much.

You should have checked the next connection down the harness, then unplug it and check the power there, then You Would have known the sending unit was causing the power flux

I am having the exact same problem on my 2012 F350 with 6.7 diesel. I am measuring 11.1 ohms at the sender with a full tank. Do you know what the resistance should be on the sending unit? Thank you.

So to replace the fuel level censure you have to drop thw fuel tank? Have you ever done that for a cng fuel ford ecoline van? Mine is not working either

Could you have used your ohm meter to see if you had Mega ohms or OL?

Similar problem with an '06 gasser Ford 250. Fixed with Techron additive which apparently chemically scrubs off/undoes the damage cause to the submersed sending unit circuitry. Fix lasted for 1 year. Problem re-occurred; more Techron, fixed again. I too was unable to successfully/definitively diagnose using error codes or wiring diagrams. I too have a '06 F250 V8 with the same problem. I sent in my cluster to have fixed, but that didn't do it. I saw a post about the Techron additive, so I have one in the tank now. How many tanks did you have to run through before it cleared the problem?

I dont have all data, i need It. We test is tale oír the fuel pump socket and take ground and put It on level wair that goes to instrument clusther and the level It suppose to go full. Sorry my inglish.
