2012 Nissan Pathfinder Throttle Body Cleaning

I have cleaned the same throttle body several times by holding the throttle plate open… First time it put my Nissan in limp mode. Brought it back, disconnected the battery terminals and it reset itself….

I think most throttle bodies can relearn the posn fairly easily, but also that a lot of people will be thrown off at how poorly their vehicle will be running on first start up

In case you didn't get junk yard screws they are like 1 to 2 Dollars each from Nissan dealership and you get brand new ones. They might have to order them though. I always have a new gasket and 4 new bolts in hand before beginning such work.

I got a ton of scrap yard bolts for my Honda, I haven't been able to find as many for the Nissan.

Hex head stripped? Hammer + Torx bit. I used a T-30 on those. Also, a *moderate* amount of penetrant allowed to soak on the back of the openings overnight or longer should give you a leg-up. Nissan dealer by me has reasonable prices on fasteners. Medium thread lock or anti-seize on the threads and maybe some grease or something smeared into the heads to prevent corrosion.

I've heard that from others as well, but there are also a lot of recommendations not to do that on a drive by wire system. I'm glad you haven't had any issues with it though

you should loosen all 4 bolts before removing them. prevents throttle body from turning

@@DIYNorth granted I believe whoever touched them before rounded them before I really got into it. I was trying to change my spark plugs. But I think next time I’m just leaving the throttle body on there and moving it out of the way

No issues, I wanted to tie this into a spark plug change, but when I had a bolt issue that set me back a bit. There seems to be debate on this but it looks like a throttle body and injector cleaning is recommended in the 75,000 mile range. That said I am closer to 150,000 miles.

on the Nissans you have to turn the ignition on, put it into drive, then you can put something heavy to hold the accelerator pedal down and the throttle body will open.

I just used a wood working bar clamp (in reverse mode) to depress the accelerator on my Mazda. I have not hear of this option for opening the throttle body on the Pathfinder. I'll try next time.

5mm Allen head too small it damage the bold i had that trouble

I to rounded out throttle body bolt. Mine is the bolt above the one you damaged. How did you get it out? Thx.

I'm sorry to hear that, I haven't gotten mine out yet. I haven't touched it yet. I think it might be a pretty invasive procedure, so unless it has to happen I might just leave it.

You should have cracked all of the bolts loose before removing them.

What issues were you having that lead you to clean the throttle body, I have a 2012 also, and once or twice a month it just decides not to start. Idles low at around 500rpm too at redlight.

I didnt have a problem with this vehicle, it was fine. I had a honda pilot that I did this on due to rough idle and it fixed the issue in conjunction with a cleaning the MAP sensor and EGR valve

I have the same problem at stop lights...idles at 750/800 then drops to 500 like it's about to die then kicks up to 800...did cleaning the TB solve that?

no you do not have to replace it. if you manipulate it manually you might have to do a re-learn procedure on the vehicle

@diynorth If you were able to remove the TB from the vehicle, any concerns if the butterfly moved (not powered)?

You should try not to manually move them if they aren't connected to power (or just in general) as it may confuse the engine for a bit until a throttle body position re-learn process is done. Once the re-learn process is done it should be able to reset the position to where it should be.

Surgery complete. Removed the TB from vehicle and cleaned thoroughly with toothbrush. Moved butterfly a tad to get bristles to the other areas. Reconnected to vehicle and no issues. 🤛🏿🤛🏿

Ideally you don't want gunk going back towards the engine. This spray cleaner does evaporate fast though.

5:15 If you were able to remove the TB had it not been for that rounded-out hex screw, would you have still done the on-to-off ignition procedure to get around the butterfly?

No, you should be able to access everything from the inside of the throttle body at that point

@@DIYNorth just did my TB this past weekend. I was a bit luckier than you and was able to remove the TB. I did run the risk to have to do a throttle relearn and manually moved the TB plate, but as you mentioned about the motors and servos, I manipulated the plate slowly, deliberately, and carefully. When I put the TB back together, I did notice the engine idle surging. After maybe 5 minutes, the surging stopped, and I took the truck out for somewhat spirited drive in the city. I tried to hit as many red light intersections to get a lot of gear 1 through 3 shifts. After the drive, the idle and engine seemed to be behaving, no relearn performed.
