2013 BMW F30 318d Part 15 - Right front suspension lower control arm issue

The owner of this car (Tom) has been having problems with the steering. It had failed the MoT on play in the steering rack and the balljoint on the right front lower control arm. After it had passed the retest Tom had a mechanic assess the steering and was quoted £1500 to fit a new steering rack. My trusty motor factor (Champion Motor Spares in Bradford) quoted me about £500 for a replacement steering rack so something didn't quite add up. Tom asked me to get a second opinion so I ended up taking it to my tyre shop of choice (Tyreworld in Halifax). They put the car over their inspection pit and a serious problem was discovered. The bolt for the right front lower control arm that had been replaced for the MoT had managed to unthread itself and the control arm had moved out of position fouling the track rod on the steering. Fortunately, the bolt had not bent so it was just a matter of refitting the bolt but it wasn't quite straightforward. I suspect that whoever fitted the control arm hadn't tightened up the bolt properly. I'm now not so sure if the steering rack needs to be replaced.
