One of the most dramatic turn of events that you will ever see on the track as What's The Scoop threw away certain victory at Sandown in March 2016 as the gelding veered off-course to hand the race on a plate to Starving Marvin.
The Nicky Henderson-trained six-year-old was easing clear having jumped the last flight safely, but suddenly jinked sharply to his left under Barry Geraghty towards startled spectators.
Geraghty managed to correct his mount but the eventual winner had gone beyond recall and would go on to record a most fortuitous victory. Hear what the jockey had to say to Racing TV afterwards.

This is not the first time this has happened. I saw a race where the leader was cantering, and just as they were running by the stands he spotted his groom and headed towards to exit to get to her. @@honesthumanoid how did he get the horse to cock its jaw and violently veer with no i put from the reigns or stirrups? How did another jockey get the horse to do the same thing next time it ran- at Ascot. This time it veered violenrly left after it was well beaten. Why did the trainer get rid of the horse to Sue Smith if the fix was on and why did the horse need its official handicap mark to drop from 127 to 100 a long time later to finally win its first and only race victory. The only real fix was it being odds of 11/10 next time out when it clearly had its own ideas about the game. Why did Michael Buckley get rid of the horse without it ever going close to winning again. Answer is the horse had his own ideas and wasn't putting it all in.

That was hysterical once you figure it out. The horse thought the race was over. He didn't bolt but slowed to a crawl and went to what he thought was the exit, which is to the horses left. I say this because the horse stopped himself at the fence, and when he saw the other horse he took off. Ironically, if the race had been another 1/8 he would've passed him again. The horse wasn't hurt, just young. It isn't only jockeys who mistime a race. They may have to use blinders. The jockey said he kept looking at the crowd.

The horse is a rogue of rogues.Henderson got rid of him to Sue Smith where he won one awful poor race and finished last more often than not.On three occasions he tried to run out where stable jockey refused to ride him in his last three races.Tailed off last in class 5 races tells you everything about the horse.People here critical of one of the greatest jockeys ever to sit on a horse shows the serious lack of intelligence regarding racing and its frailties.

The jock sounded kind and generous to me. He understood that the horse is a "big baby," who found himself all alone and "had a look around" for home. Maybe steeplechasing is not this horse's number one job choice. 🙂

Personally I don't like the jumping stuff races. Only normal horseraces are better for me. And this is too long it should be at most 2400 meters. A race should last less than 3 minutes. For Arabian horses 2.50- 3 at most and for English 2.40-2.50 including dirt races.

I have seen things like this before, it use to be at the dogs when a load of travelers had a lot of money on a dog, it set off and was third around 6 lenghs back when all of a sudden a cat ran on to the track and the race was abandoned, whats to say some one had one of those high pitch noice machines poing at the horse as it came down the straight, looks dodgy to me.

@@missflorence2010 James..you are clearly an ignoramus, racehorses are bred to race, they love racing so the clues in the name. And horses are not whipped ,if a jockey feels he's in with a chance he will use the persuader, something the horse would barely feel,it is the sound from behind from the crop that makes the horse run faster(Oh how terrible, kept in luxury then asked 6 times a year to run particularly faster for 2 furlongs) if the heavily felted crop hurt than believe me next time the jockey approached it in the paddock it would shy away turn and kick out, thinking I remember this little bas*ard but they don't, they stand quietly while the jockey mounts.

After looking up these horses on The BHA's website, I'm sorry to say that three of these four horses went on to have tragic deaths. Starving Marvin pulled-up lame at Wincanton in November 2016 and was put down a couple of weeks later and Bad Boy du Pouldu was fatally injured at Plumpton in November 2020. What's The Scoop won what looked to have been his last ever race in 2020 but he came back after 18 months off the track in August 2021 and finished last and then finished last about 8 months later at 150/1 and died the next day at the age of 12.

A jockey can ride and steer a horse , unless the horse has other ideas. This could've ended up quite nasty for both the jock and the horse. Thankfully both are okay.

Sorry but if you stop riding, the horse thinks the race is finished (like when they pass the line and the jockey stops, they stop) jockeys looking between their legs and sitting up in the saddle is a disgrace. You don't have to forcefully ride and use a whip, but you can't stop riding. You need to keep a horse up to the task. Too interested in keeping the winning margin down for the handicappers. Supposed to be professionals. Its like a boxer ahead on points dropping his arms in the last round. Finish the job (its what you get paid for !!!)

I know nothing of horse racing, it confuses the hell out of me but, to me, when the jockey put his head way down and then raised it back up, it was like the horse said, nope, not gonna do this and decided it was gonna do what it wanted and ventured off course. That jockey was pissed tho, whipping the horse like that I'm surprised the horse didn't buck his ass off.
