Hey Guys - excellent video! As a true car guy and tech junkie, I really appreciate the total silence during the video so that you can get the true idea of what the driving experience sounds like. I also appreciated how the driver pushed the car through the curves and tried a couple of "full throttle" take-offs so that you could hear the gas engine generating power at its maximum capacity. I'll definitely check out some of your other videos!

Agreed, a few people have suggested this, and I think it's a good idea. The only problem is the POV camera I'm using doesn't handle low-light well at all. This week, I just upgraded to a Nikon D600 so I'll try some interior night shots with that for the next video and see how it turns out. -Chris

Very slick. GM has really stepped up its game.If I was in the market for a daily driver the Volt would def be at the top of my list. Its slick, fast, comfortable and with my commute I would be buying gas about once evey six months. Well done GM.

We've owned (not leased) our Volt for 5 months now, average lifetime MPG is now at 147 mpg and rising every day. We love the ride, power, quiet, the smoothness yet sense of car control and connection, the practicality and the fact that it is a positive act on our part to DO our part. We all live on this ball of dirt, so we act like we are responsible residents. Haters, you are lost in the past. We are early adopters, like people who used Macs in 1993 (we did). Where are you in the continuum?

You were wondering about the cost of charging the Volt. It all depends on your electric rates. It takes 13 kilowatt hours to charge a Volt from 0 charge. All you need to do is find your average rate for a month and multiply that by 13. If your rate is 15 cents per kwh, your charging cost will be $1.95 for 40 miles of driving. But you never wait for the battery to fully discharge. You always plug in.. Even if you just go to the corner store. The charger is not drawing pwr at full charge.

Binaural IS cool. I used to sell binaural headphones in the late 70s. Basically it was a set of fancy headphones with a mic in each ear piece. The idea was that sound was recorded the same way we heard it. The recordings had a very real sense of "being there". I was always surprised they didn't catch on more

the volt currently has the highest EV range of any plug-in hybrid at nearly 40 gas-free miles. this means that for most people's daily commutes, they would NEVER have to use an ounce of gas. there is also a $7500 federal tax credit for buyers, as well as an additional $2500 state tax credit for california purchasers. i'd say this car is a steal all considering.

I think the setting was on mountain. (The throttle is slower to respond to driver input) I drive mine on sport 99% of the time, still average 36mpg when using the ICE. I agree with the complaint (the only one I have) about it being a 4 seater (my 08 impala seats 6), but since I don't have a wife anymore, its just my daughters and I, I no longer care.

There are a lot of people out there that don't believe that the Volt can revert back to Electric once it has depleted the battery and the generator turns on. Watching your video, and keeping an eye on the battery flow screen, it is quite evident that the Volt is reverting back & forth a few times. That is what regenerative braking does. That is why most Volt owners report 43 mpg in gas mode vs. the 35 reported by the EPA. mpgomatic reported the same after 600 miles. tks

They aren't anymore complicated than your smart phone or modern household appliances. It's an electric car with a backup gas generator for extended range. I believe price already came down for 2014, and you get a tax rebate. Depending on where you live you also get special parking and driving privileges. And most importantly save money on fuel costs.. you really can't beat it.

More than Prius at 2 years. More than 55% of all other car models sold in the USA. Had the plant not been shut down to re-tool for the 2014 Impala, 50% of all 2012 sales would have occurred in the last 4 months. The Volt was sold out in CA in November. The Volt is the number 1 selling plug-in in the world. Isn't that good enough? Remember, it took the Prius over 4 years to get rolling.

This car is one of the more interesting takes on a hybrid powertrain which is IMO more unique than Toyota/Ford more 'traditional' hybrid systems. No it isn't a "EV with a range extender" or whatever GM calls it; it is a plug-in hybrid with a strong emphasis on the EV part of the equation. Unlike the Prius plug-in, the Volt will actually work (for around 40miles at least) on pure EV even at freeway speeds of 75mph without ever nudging the gas engine. Can it be improved? Yes, the mileage in its range-extender mode isn't as impressive as the Prius, but this is a gen 1 Volt vs. a gen 3 Prius where Toyota definitely has the technology lead vs. GM. However the Voltec system is a better basis on which allows the EV mode to be used more frequently & less restrictively, so I hope the 2016 gen 2 Volt can improve on this.

Leases are a good option only if you stay under the 12,000 miles per year. I've owned mine for 15 months and already drove over 35,000 miles. 13,000 miles on electricity and saved about $1,500 worth of gasoline.

One of the main reasons the Volt will be cheap in the long run is almost no mtc. The brakes will last about 150k miles because, in normal braking, they are not used until about 3 mph. The E motor stops the car. That is regenerative braking. No tranny to service. Only about 5 moving parts in the motor. Oil changes about every 2 years. Don't know where you got 200k miles. Test drive one. You won't believe how smooth this car drives. For $32k, it's a steal. NO GAS IN 9 MONTHS.

Oh my... GM's Chevrolet Volt electric posted an impressive 205 percent sales gain last year, but that translated to just 23,461 sales - well below GM's initial prediction of 45,000 deliveries. The year before Chevy sold 7,671 Volts, missing the car's 10,000 unit sales goal.

Probably lousy. He was hot footing it and not using the Volts regenerative actions very well. Driving in "L" gives me about 5-7 more miles range per charge. Backing off the "gas" and coasting to stops adds some more miles. Most Volt owners start out driving like this, but they quickly calm down and start to learn all the advantages "smart" driving give you. Like about 25% more range. Just like an ICE car. Faster means lousy.

200,000 miles? I've only driven 9k miles and my cost is almost under $30k. A Honda Accord that sells for $25k (& doesn't have all the options my Volt does) will cost $1k minimum in gas every year. That means in 5 short years, my Volt is cheaper than the Honda. Kiplinger Investment Group states that the Volt will make up the extra cost in 5 years on any similar optioned car.

From one of the articles mentioned by a Volt naysayer earlier on this thread: "While the Chevy Volt is not yet a profitable vehicle, volume should eventually reach a point where it will be, particularly as the market increasingly turns to more fuel-efficient vehicles and electric cars, and the early development of the Volt will leave General Motors ideally positioned to rapidly expand its EV offerings" This is actually a complimentary article for the Chev. Volt.

2013 Chevrolet Volt now, an extra 3 mile, per charge cycle, to the original normal range. Cadillac ELR new electric car, with exact similar architectonics as the Volt electric system. Cadillac E sales will simply help lower the Volt's "price of new technology", like number of purchases in other new technical products = more Volt sales. 'Natural Gas', also popular on cover of "Fleet Owner" Transportation magazine. Plus, H2O+12volts=H = Hydrogen, millions world wide use this to stay warm too.

I paid $31,500 for my Volt. I saved $1,200 on gas the first year. That includes the cost of charging my car. In 5 years, that is a savings of $6,000. That will make the price of my car $25,500. A similar non electric car costs $25k. Add 5 years worth of buying gas to that car and you have a $31k non electric car. That is $6k more than my Volt. Isn't really worth it? I haven't purchased gas in 9 months. How did you do in high school math?
@ggtontoyono
@ggtontoyono 12 жыл бұрын
It's still expensive, but i'm not saying the car isn't worth it, with a 100% electric mileage you can amortize almost all the overpricing in 200.000miles but never all the overcost. Maybe that doesn't matter, because the added value of this advanced car...

I'll make it simple, you can purchase any car you'd like to the same way I can. The discussion I brought up is the inorganic role of Government in the private sector. The Volt can't be sold on it's merits alone, or even with massive help from Government. Think about it, the production of each one is about $90K and sold for less than half that and they're still not selling. All Government investments are socializing risk & privatizing gain. If it fails we lose, if it wins there's no dividends

+Andrew Silva Use it like you use any cellphone. Unplug it when you leave home in the morning, drive to work, do all the good stuff, come back in evening, plug it in the garage to the wall, sleep. Rinse and repeat. Assuming your commute is within ~50 miles (or workplace has EV charger), it is pretty much a full EV car. The engine will run occasionally (once a month I heard) to lubricate the engine with oil & prevent the gas in the tank from fouling. However, the most you'll fill up is probably once per 2 months.
@pizzasubs
@pizzasubs 9 жыл бұрын
+Trades46 so the main thing is, I usually take trips to Vegas every year and from my home to there is right around the 450 mile mark, and the speed limit varies along the way with the highest being right around 70-75 MPH, could I make that pretty much all on the electric motor, or do you think I will have to tap into the regular gas engine quite a bit along the way, and also, how do you rate the VOLT for being able to pass vehocles on long straight stretches of highway where you really have to get on the gas pedal pretty hard??????
@Trades46
@Trades46 9 жыл бұрын
Andrew Silva 450 miles on hwy will stretch even the Tesla's range. Most EVs (Volt included) will only do ~80 miles give or take. Luckily that's where the Volt's range extender function works. I've browsed the Volt forums and they say the 1.4 gas engine is good for 84hp but most of it is used for recharging the battery once it goes to zero. Since you can't use more than it recharges the traction motor shouldn't have 150hp but ~80hp usable. Not a problem for the mostly flat interstate of NV, but could be an issue in hilly bits of CA.

You don't have to charge every 40 miles. The car can drive perfectly on gas alone. 40 mile EV range is for people who live and commute within these miles and want an EV that can accommodate that. There are folks out there who have a Volt and never put gas in it in over 10 years! 😯

Now the Government is out the tax revenue on the subsidies given out, the taxes from energy companies & the taxes from gas sold. Do you really think they won't come up with another way to receive & increase revenue related to driving like making all cars have a GPS tracking chip to charge per mileage in each vehicle? How would that make people feel? Also, legislation has already started for this.

I've seen some of your other posts (especially political ones)...hopefully with some understanding and knowledge you'll achieve wisdom someday. You'll probably want the last word but at least I know I'm right.

I'll stick to front engine V8, rear wheel drive totally gasoline powered American car (be it Ford, Chevrolet or Dodge). There's too much hokus pokus in these electric half-breeds for my taste, thanks just the same - or at least until the price comes down and the technology is better proven (without government handouts).

Again Look back @ how you continue w/ personal insults instead of sticking w/ the argument as a matter of fact truth & history like I have This is why I know I've won the debate Also I've yet to offer any information regarding myself, whether it's gender, age, economic status, academic pedigree, where I live, how I live, what I do or have done because its irrelevant & has nothing to do with the issue yet you seem to think you've profiled me. Yet you offer info about yourself.as if its relative

I'll stick to my Toyota with a 268hp V6. 24.5 mpg combined works for me if I don't have to drive a car as ugly & odd looking as the volt
