2013 Sonata Rod Knock Engine Failure Repair Part 2, plus Valve Cover Gasket Replacement

My 2013 Sonata had a P1326 code and there was a rod knock which was in line with the Hyundai Recall for the Theta 2 engine. When I contacted Hyundai they would do NOTHING for me being that the car was 15k over the 120k mile extended warranty. So …… I decided to give it a look myself and see if I can repair it with the engine IN the car! This is the 2nd part of the series where I replace the valve cover gasket as well. This is a great video and I am going to attempt the same but I have 3 questions . What did you do to relieve the pressure for the oil pump balancer tensioners?Did you take the timing cover off to turn the crank to get bring down rod 2 ? How did you push the pistons up to get the top bearing half ? I would really appreciate those steps

This just happened to me and my 2014 Hyundai Sonata I had no idea about the recall until looking in the Internet with my issues I was driving and I just lost all power to the wheels car wouldn’t accelerate currently on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere car has 122,000 miles if it’s the same with with recall you think Hyundai will replace it?? And also I can’t find the other parts of this video

One other thing I noticed but didn't say on video is that the stationary oil pump chain guide is loose. The tensioner guide is in good shape but I will absolutely fix that before it goes back together. This could have been some of the cold start clattering I heard that Hyundai deemed 'normal' when I brought it up to them when the recall was completed.

I love the way you polish the bearing, very smart! So after taking the engine apart, is there any preventative measures that you would suggest to keep this engine running as long as possible?

The best advice I can give is to make sure that you keep up on oil changes! Hyundai suggests 3500-4000 mile changes, I'd go no more than 4000 miles. Unfortunately, this looks like it's been long term wear, so who knows how it was taken care of before I owned the car.

@@JrZCarZ Thanks Jerry. I also read on Hyundai forum that people suggest using 5w-30 and Hyundai OEM oil filter to keep the engine last.

Wasn't it a recall on these cars? Why didnt you use the recall? I have the same issue with my 13 Optima. I seen it was a recall but I dnt know if kia will do the right thing and fix it. I have 156000 on the car.

Just happened to me this weekend.. They've extended the power train warranty to lifetime if you get the KSDS Software Update.

When he goes to take off the first fuel line you DO NOT need a special tool. That red clip will slide up very easily exposing the tabs which you can then easily press in by hand to disconnect the fuel line.

That car has the orange dipstick. I saw a video saying if Kia has inspected your car for this problem they replace the yellow dipstick with an orange dipstick. This will tell all Kia dealers they inspected this car and either fixed it or everything was ok. Did you have a Yellow Dip Stick when you first bought the car? There is a video on this. I think you will still be left with the oil consumption issue. With the way your engine drinks oil nothing but a complete teardown would be required for peace of mind. Most likely your oil control rings are shot.
