It’s now 2023. I purchased my Honda Civic EX new in 2015 & I now have 155,000 miles on it. I’ve had ZERO mechanical failures on this car. I change the oil every 5,000 miles & the CVT transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. The only other things I’ve done are brakes & tires & the occasional air filter. Best car I’ve ever owned.

@joshuagalaski101710 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex I think the reason why the Honda CVT is able to change ratios quicker than other CVTs is Honda included a torque converter in their CVT. So when you floor it, the torque converter slips allowing the engine to rev quickly while the CVT ratios are changing in the background. Once the CVT ratio catches up, the torque converter locks for increased efficiency. Honda discussed the inclusion of the torque converter in their CVT when they released the Accord stating that it sacrificed efficiency but gave it a better feel.

This is by far the most comprehensive and professional review I've come across. Well done. An article in Car and Driver a few days ago mentioned that several of their test drivers ended up with backaches from driving the Civic. I then did some research and found that there have been many complaints of this nature starting with the 2008 model, but that this problem isn't noticeable during a test drive as you're not in the car long enough. I know that a small group of people on the Internet can make a problem seem more widespread than it actually is, but if several of the C&D test drivers had this complaint it must be an issue. Do you have any input on this, Alex? I was on the verge of purchasing the Civic EX, but I have a herniated disc problem, and am not going to take any chances with my back. Thanks
@AAutoBuyersGuide10 жыл бұрын
I usually mention this in my reviews. Honda likes to have fairly aggressive fixed lumbar support in their cars. Personally I like that and so does my back but I do know that some people really dislike that much lumbar support and it can actually make them uncomfortable.

One thing I'd add is safety. The Civic far outscores the others. In fact, last I checked it's one of only three passenger vehicles (the others being the Forester and Mini Countryman) rated top score of "good" in the new small offset crash test. It gets top scores across the board and is an IIHS top safety pick "plus". Just something to consider. PS, the Forte failed miserably at that test. They also show signs of age very early compared with others.
@MikeL008410 жыл бұрын
At 14:05 why do you question the CVT engine when it comes to enjoyment of driving? Is this something I missed where cvts are generally not well liked by drivers? So many cars are changing over to them. Lastly... Has the civic sedan made it back onto consumer reports' recommended list? Thank you
@AAutoBuyersGuide10 жыл бұрын
CVTs aren't as quick to shift ratios as a traditional automatic. So if you're driving along and want to pass, or if you're driving the car hard, the time it takes to transition from a high ratio to a low ratio is longer than with your average 6-speed. Personally I think it's an OK trade off because CVTs have better economy numbers and hill climbing is vastly improved when you have a small engine. However, many outlets like Consumer Reports dislike CVTs in all flavours and don't see the positives so I don't think it had ended up on their recommended list yet,
@MikeL008410 жыл бұрын
Gotcha. its crazy how consumer reports and other review sites are against cvts when it seems like they are so popular among manufacturers these days . I am in the market for a compact sedan and love the look of this car. But for someone who has a little need for speed and likes to drive, do you think a cvt is the way to go? Sadly I don't think I have much of a choice anymore as it seems like 80% of cars are going cvt
@AAutoBuyersGuide10 жыл бұрын
Michael L CVTs in cars like this will give you the best acceleration and the best fuel economy. They are lighter weight than the 9-speed ZF that some makers are starting to use and have a more normal feel when compared to dual-clutch transmissions. Honda has the best CVT in this category, so it would be hard to go wrong with the Civic. You should spend some time in the cars you're looking to see what really speaks to you.
@Lucky8s9 жыл бұрын
Michael L A lot of car manufacturers like Toyota and Honda are going for CVTs for fuel economy and other factors. You also need to be aware that their economy cars sell by the masses, which is why percentages can be deceiving. Look at it this way, high volume sellers like the Corolla have a CVT and that makes up the 80% or so but tons of car models that don't sell as much don't have the CVT such as any car with power. i.e. Mazda 3, Ford Fusion etc.

Your reviews are the best and most thorough I've seen. They really need to be watched more than once to absorb all the information provided. I do have one suggestion. While you provide analyses of the seating for the driver and rear passengers, I don't recall a review in which you mentioned the facilities for the front passenger (perhaps I missed it). My wife is only 4'10" and has a problem with a non-adjustable low passenger seat and a high dashboard and windows. When we test drove a Fit, that was a disqualifier. With a car like the Civic or the Prius line, that have instruments panels on top of the traditional dash, that could be even more of an issue. How is passenger side visibility in the Civic?

letsgocapsbeatpens What I noticed is that most publications have not 0-60 tested the CVT, instead they referred to the 2014 0-60 time. "During Edmunds' track testing, a Civic EX-L coupe with the CVT ran from zero to 60 mph in 9.0 seconds, and an EX sedan with the CVT did it in 9.1 seconds -- that's about half a second slower than average for this class." www.edmunds.com/honda/civic/2015/#/leaderboard-reviews-3-anchor It's possible having less fuel in the tank and elevation caused a slightly inflated 0-60. About the faster CVT: I happen to own a "11 Sentra and a '14 Accord. I beleive the improved acceleration in the Honda CVT is due to its ability to lock the torque converter faster and at more throttle positions. I have noticed I obtain the best acceleration ( in the Sentra) not at full throttle, but at about 80% throttle. At full, the engine winds up a lot and just revs (like you mentioned) But at 80% you feel it "lock in" and accelerate well. Even if you start out at full throttle and then back off to 80% you will feel the car snap and take off , due ( I believe) to the Torque converter engaging. Sound plausible?
@AAutoBuyersGuide10 жыл бұрын
There's something more going on in the Honda CVT. Unlike Nissan who is very transparent with engineering designs, Honda doesn't share as much information so I can't say why it lacks the "rubber band" effect or how it changes ratios so rapidly. I can say that Honda denies using a planetary gearset which was my first thought, because the Nissan "small engine CVT" which is used in the Versa and Note improves down-shift response and increases the gear spread by using a 2-speed planetary gearset in the transmission. When down-shifting, that transmission can swap to the "low" ratio in the planetary gearset giving the feel of a rapid and more traditional downshift. My guess is that Honda just made their CVT's "cones" move more rapidly and to reduce wear they programmed the system to retard torque while the quick shift occurs, these two things combine to create a more "traditional" feel.

More than one person in the car?
@upilufti10 жыл бұрын
Let's assume 5. I've driven my car (an S60) to the airport with bags packed for everybody (1 carry on, and .5 checked bags each). No problem fitting everything in. While I understand the "more space" argument. The "more carryon" argument is largely irrelevant. Since a pretty normal car can already fit all the carryons you'll ever need + more.
@user-xg6zz8qs3q10 жыл бұрын
The argument is for scale. The point here is that the Sentra has a bigger trunk because it can fit more carry-on bags. I personally find it more representative than using numbers. Other reviewers use grocery bags or crates for this argument.
@upilufti10 жыл бұрын
Chupick Nicolas I tend to believe that representations should be meaningful. It's meaningless to be able to carry 9 (or whatever) carry-ons. Just like it's meaningless that a football field is, what, four 747 wingspans? What does that, like, even mean? I guess the problem is just marketing speak. It'd be pretty boring to say "oh the Civic has 10 more cubic feet of trunk space." Even though that'd probably be more helpful to know.
@lowrider27610 жыл бұрын
Cameron Tu No one is expecting anyone to literally pack their car full of carryons, it's just for perspective. It's easier for some people to have a visual representation rather than a number so they can get an idea of how much space the car actually has. Throwing around numbers can sound like jargon to people who can't accurately imagine how big that space is.

If you care about styling, go with Toyota, if you like performance and decent everyday needs, go the Honda. Make sure to check both of them out and other cars like accord, Mazda, Nissan.

Same here...i would go with the Civic, the Corolla has tiny blind spot mirrors, and it just feels boring...

zxbc I know, right? I also like that feeling since I drive something that not many people drive. Just because certain cars aren't as popular as others it doesn't mean I should just jump on the bandwagon of biased car critics and what others think.

Car and driver usually have the fastest 0-60 in the car testing industry, but they have only managed 8.8 secs, 7.6 seems hard to believe, I've driven the car and no matter how hard I tried the car never went below 9, and I live at sea level, mind you I had a passanger but there's no way one slim passanger can add so much time... are you sure it wasn't downhill?
@AAutoBuyersGuide10 жыл бұрын
The test track I use is 13 feet uphill actually. Were you testing the model with the CVT? There was a big difference between the 5-speed and the CVT.

From a lot of people, the Mazda is a winner when comparing to the Honda. It's very sexy looking, has a better interior (except of that weird touchscreen that's attached to the dash). It has a good fuel efficiency. It's also has nice handling and ride. The Honda is very good for lasting long, top of the line fuel efficiency. It does have a good ride and handling but not the best. It's also alittle small car if you are a tall person or so. Over all, Mazda is the best as far as people say but Honda is very average but it has some pros against Mazda. I would also suggest test driving them as well as other cars like the Nissan Sentra (Very spacious car), Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla. Hope this help and good luck.

Does anyone have any guesses on what this issue may be on my 2015 civic. This video while driving I don't hear anything that would worry me when I drive but when I drive mines at 50mph I start hearing a high pitch woooooooooooooooing sound, everyone Says that's just the motor it's normal but Iam not so sure it is after watching this video. While this guy drove I heard nothing but quiet so I know something is wrong with mines

Why does Honda continue to use the same old 1.8 liter engine for over a decade??
@AAutoBuyersGuide10 жыл бұрын
In general the reason is to keep costs down. That's also why Toyota sells an old 4-speed in the base Corolla.

Should I go for the 2014 civic or 2014 Sentra?
@DanielSparten10 жыл бұрын
I heard the Nissan Sentra is pretty rough when it comes to ride, and handling. But the Nissan Sentra is a pretty big car compared to its class. If you carry a lot of stuff in cars, the Nissan Sentra is pretty spacious for you. The Honda Civic is pretty good. I have no problems so far with my ex model. The Honda Civic is alittle small. However, I don't carry a lot of stuff and I'm not a very tall or big person so it's a nice car for me. Make sure to check these two cars and also others like Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, Ford Focus.

Sven Dijkstra Aside from luxury cars, we don't see a lot of cheap sedans in Europe:P
@tarquesh9 жыл бұрын
WuWei Xu. You right. In the luxury class there are more sedans. Today another Civic driver with an tourer mk IX greats me. I saw the nose of his black civic , wave me goodday and give a horn. Like car enthousiasts do. I go to start other Civic MK IX drivers great nice drive. That tourer is something very different. I see older civic drivers be jalours that i have a newer car. They have no ledlight daydrive. But that civic is nice, i test drive it when i was looking for a civic. The second had a empty battery with an airco who needs service, the first was driving wel, but to much usage spots, it had a pre owner who butch here and there and a door handle was buggling. So i can not see usage spots , i had a 16 years old car with less usage spots, very carefull personality, i desides to buy as young as i can. Ok, in my car i have some usage spots of the pre owner but it is in certain borders of acceptation.
