I've driven a Volt and two of my friends have them. They are, indeed, remarkable cars. The tech that allows the car to do what it does so well is nothing short of amazing. As Chris said, it is very quiet and smooth. It handles surprisingly well and it has surprising power. And, it's a great and very usable car. That Chris did this review in that way speaks to both the goodness of the Volt, and to who might be interested and for what reasons. Anything interesting with four wheels (or two) should be fair game for review - but only if they're *real* motorheads.

People need to get a clue. This car would outlast a Prius any day on reliability and is 10 times more fun to drive. GM today is not the GM of a decade ago. They came back with a vengeance and are kicking ass and taking names! Chris gets it, you should drive one and get it too.

I know this comment is old, I love the Chevy volt. I had a 2012 and it was a great car but reliable it is not. The engine was fine, but there are so many electrical problems with these cars, and even back in 2020 before they were out of production voltec professionals don't even want to work on these. I do not recommend buying them as a used car

I think people are missing the point. This is for commuting. You keep the fun/ fast stuff in the garage, which keeps your costs down and wear on the thing down, and if you get bored of the volt, you can drive your toy to work instead. But 90% of the time, this is the ideal car for a commuter of any stripe. This is the car as it was always intended: a tool, an appliance for moving people. The car has BECOME more than that, and there are plenty of ways to get your jollies in a different car. And just think: the more commuters who pick up one of these, the more gas there will be for those of us who like to have fun with our cars. I don't love the volt, but I'm glad it's around for the people that it's meant for.

i'm so disappointed in Chevy for not marketing this car, like at all. It was in the pipe for years, with so much hype, and then it seems Chevy just killed it with zero marketing done. Chris' enthusiasm is exactly what happens when you drive the Volt. It is a game changer and other manufactures know it, so they attack the Volt. My 2014 Volt cost 31,195 - 7,500 fed tax credit - 1,500 CA rebate = 22,195. My Volt does 0-60 in 8.5 secs, does 100 mph on electric power, has powerful breaks, turns awesome, averages 104 mpg. If you drive less than 40 miles daily you will get 250 mpg. The Volt is awesome. Love it! Plus the maintenance is almost nothing if you drive on electric.

Chris absolutely nails it with the comment that the Volt is a vehicle that depends on how you use it. I drove a 325+ HP Subaru for 6 years while I lived in a rural area. I loved the car, and out there I had an opportunity to use it. I've since moved, and after a year in the city and the 16 mile commute that takes 45 minutes, I realized the Subaru just wasn't the right vehicle anymore. So I am leasing a 2013 Volt, and for where I'm at now and how it's used it's absolutely perfect.

I like them too... However, the short format means that, as in this one, there is less time to talk about the downsides of a car. Okay... my two cents, because I follow /DRIVE and its presenters: Matt Farah drives (leases) a Volt for the exact reasons that Harris discusses in this video; you have to read between the lines: this is a great DAILY DRIVER. If you know Farah and the rest of the /DRIVE presenters, you know they have all sorts of crazy automobiles. Harris owns a 512 Testarossa. JF Musial owns an M3. Farah owns a Delorian, a C6 'Vette, and he just sold his Ford Raptor. Larry Kosilla owns the cleanest Porsche 911 I have ever seen. All of those cars are awesome. None of those cars are practical. When you drive cars like that all the time you actually yearn for something simple, small, cheap, quiet, and practical. Coming from someone like Chris Harris (who is not paid a cent by Chevy) you have to appreciate what he says in context: there is a place in car culture for awesome daily drivers.
@TheSmokingTire11 жыл бұрын
That's the whole point. In Los Angeles, where driving is just a huge grid full of traffic, the Volt actually makes my life better. I lease one for $320/month, no money down, and after six months I'm averaging 125 mpg. I have used just over one Raptor tank's worth of gas in SIX MONTHS. Cutting out the fuel bill for the Raptor was enough to cover the lease, the fuel, and the insurance for the Volt, but in an urban/suburban setting, I absolutely LOVE how the Volt drives. People watching this video don't understand the Volt, and Chris's review of it is absolutely spot on. The Volt makes my life better, and when I want to go fast, look cool, or whatnot, I have other cars for that.
@afinny0211 жыл бұрын
I would also like to add, for the people that think Chevy is paying Chris to say nice things... Chris isn't exactly a sellout for money. He is freelance for a reason and has had his fair share of squabbles with manufacturers (Ferrari) because he has called them out for shady stuff while other auto journalists keep their mouths shut so they can enjoy all expense paid trips to Maranello along with big bowls of shrimp at press events. Mr. Farah, on the other hand, has stated emphatically in his podcasts that he will gladly sell his soul for money, but apparently carmakers won't pay him, so he sticks to his guns.

To those confused about the perceived inconsistency in the scores, I think /Drive is going more for a contextual score. They take into account the vehicle's price and its intended market. At the end, it says "In-Class Rankings". Hence, a Volt can (and should?) score higher than a Mercedes A-class.

I agree with Chris, the feel good factor is awesome! Drove the Volt when it was launched in France in 2012... In paris in rush hour, on the périphérique, on the Champs Elysées and everywhere in between genuinely feeling good about myself. Everything in the car is silent, the displays on the instrument cluster and the center console are so cool and you then look out of the windows and you see hundreds of scooters buzzing around thousands of cars in such a noise that it seems weird compared to the silence in the cabin. All of that without burning a drop of fuel. Eco smugness at its best. And getting gov rebates on top of that....héhéhé. I'm in!

This great review of the Volt is spot on (including the few areas where it rates the Volt 3 out of 5). I own a 2013 Volt and love it. Ford and Mazda driver my whole life, never thought I'd buy a GM vehicle but I couldn't be happier. 68 mile round-trip commute per day - 45-50 of it typically on electric charge. The quickest (in Sport mode), quietest car I've ever driven. Averaging 107 mpg after 13,000 mi. Saving $80-$90 per month operating this car v my previous 30 mpg commuting car (this includes the cost of gas and electricity - both of which are relatively expensive in Southern California). If you're willing to spend $26K-$27K on a new car, you should really consider the Volt.

I drove one of these last year here in Australia (Holden Volt) and was really impressed by how it drove, and the smoothness of it's acceleration, but.. I would be hard pressed to front the money for it. There's still an ICE to service, that has a high centre of gravity, that affects crash performance and takes up space. It is a brilliant brilliant step toward popular EV's, but I'd rather have a Tesla Model S myself. Sure that's a lot more money, but neither car is particularly cheap, so I feel like it could be justified. If not, I'd still rather wait for the Model E os some other equivalent car.

It's a hybrid braking system If you press the braking pedal gently, you'll do regenerative braking using the electric motor (turns kinetic energy back into electricity and charges the battery), it has a weak action so you have to anticipate a lot in order to use it, but you can control it very precisely. If you press harder, the disc brakes kick in and have a much stronger braking action. It works differently than traditional braking systems, it takes a few days to get used to it. Journalists and people switching cars usually don't like them.

Would have been cool if I had seen this a month ago, but this confirms why we purchased two!

I like the new review concept overall, however, I think we need more commentary on the interior, accessories, and trim levels/options to make these reviews complete. Thanks for this one though. I kinda want to try a Volt out.

Is it well damped ?

At 0:17, the 1.4L ICE is *not* turbocharged. The rest of the review is spot on though. If you drive less than 50 miles per day on average, and like to be able to go on a road trip once in a while, the volt is for you.

But can it drift ?

Yup the Volt is a great Car, Quiet, brisk, and its going to save me $5200 a year over my my Honda Pilot I use to drive. I would recommend leasing, the worlds most advanced power train is a marvel until something were to wrong, On lease I don't have to worry about it.

The comments here are ridiculous. The hater's feeling is "Well, if I don't like that car (even if I've never driven it) no one else is allowed to like it. If they DO like it, it's because they were paid, or they're drunk, or they're lying." Someone like Chris has built the trust of readers and viewers for 10+ years. Why would he mislead you now? Because he liked a car you inexplicably don't? That's not misleading, that just means there's more to him than drifting sports cars. When Clarkson enjoys a "normal" car, I bet you don't harp on him for being bought out or full of shit, do you?

"Who cares about a commuter car that's only relevant to the billion of people who commute every day. Chris going sideways in Ferraris, that's relevant! And Chevy totally paid for that!" - F'ing Internet If anybody paid for that, it was Matt. It's his car. Because he's a commuter, too. I know it's hard to believe for some people, because he's supposed to have all this youtube money, plus what ever the current brand is that you don't like is paying him, right!?
