How much can it tow?
@YeatzeeGuitar10 жыл бұрын
3.73's do not help towing in any way, 4.10's are superior for that. The Raptor has 4.10's mainly because it comes stock with ~35" tires and those gears help compensate for their massive size to keep wear and tear down on the drivetrain. The difference maker here was when the truck decided to upshift/downshift. The 4.10's gave the raptor the ability to climb back up the rev range and get back up to speed. With 3.73's it may not have been able to do that, which in theory is partly why the 250 never upshifted.
@kylefitzgerald441910 жыл бұрын
The raptor for the suspension that it has it does not sit that low and for towing you really can`t just expect that for would put towing mirrors on a truck that`s meant for off road uses.

If you wanted a tow vehicle, why whould you buy a 3/4 SRW in the first place? Wouldn't the obvious choice be the truck with the highest capcity, i.e, the Ram 3500 DRW? And since it's not a Furd diesel, it might actually work.

Doc PJ Well, compare the Ram 2500 vs 3500 (SRW) the ONLY difference between the diesel versions is the rear spring packs (in the drive train) my 2012 2500 has 4 smaller leafs vs 3 larger leafs in a 3500.. the DRW has the same 11.5" rear end as well, just has extra over loads that the SRW 3500 doesn't have (and the dual rear tires)

+Rexford L To be honest after a lot of research I would avoid the diesels like the plague. They all seem to have so much emissions crap bolted on and it is negatively impacting reliability. The 6.4 Hemi in the Ram 2500 pickup still has the old 66RFE trans that has a split 2nd gear so the gearing ratios aren't ideal compared to the 6R140 in the Ford. The Asin AS66RC 6 speed close ratio auto trans is only available with the 6.4L Hemi in Cab and Chassis configurations. So I think an F250 6.2L would have a good chance of destroying a Ram 2500 6.4L with the RFE on the Ike gauntlet.

Richard Cunningham If you're referring to that ridiculous 0-60 vid, that proves exactly nada. Oh, and a 0-60 time difference under 0,7 seconds, with an empty low budget Furd vs. a loaded Ram? Oh yeah, that proves evreything and is truely the essence of a clean ass whipping,,,, NOT. Load up the Furd and it'll be very similar and a complete crap shoot. Besides, the Ram is a much nicer and better built truck in all aspects. You'll need to live close to the Furd shop to own one, and of course, have a backup truck. Fix Or Repair Daily.

That suspension is built to compress for high speed off road driving, it is gonna squat, even with wd. Transmission mapping was the one and only factor. The transmission on the raptor, and for that matter the 6.2 chevy, with a tune to map it for that stupid high elevation, would perform much better and compare to their fat brothers in the 3/4 ton lineups.

When comparing two vehicles, omitting pertinent facts confuse people. In this case, the rear axle ratio is brought up as a relevant difference. If you tell us what the rear axle ratio is you must also tell us tire height and transmission ratios. The rear axle ratio on it's own is meaningless in this comparison without tire height and transmission ratios. I was surprised "Mr Truck" did not say something.

Respectfully... good review but the raptor is not made to haul that much. Huge disadvantage. But it is sort of apples to apples with the engine at least. Please please please stop comparing naturally aspirated engines vs turbo engines at elevation. When you do that, it only gives people in colorado a good review. Lower elevation the turbos dont perform much better but the N/A vehicles do. How about this? Take an ecoboost and test it against a 5.7 hemi and 6.2 silverado at elevation. Then go to a low elevation like arizona or kansas and do it again so people see the difference it makes. Im talking about the racing and towing tests like 0-60 and 1/4 while unloaded and then while towing. Do that in high and low elevation so YOU GUYS and other people learn how much it changes. To be honest i dont think you guys know how much different the results will be. When you test a N/A engine at high elevation, you are slowing down by 1.8 to 2 seconds in your 0-60 runs, whereas an ecoboost or any other turbo vehicle will slow by a tenth or two.
@sptulsa110 жыл бұрын
With an almost even test between the 2 trucks I guess it comes down to what would you rather be seen in. For me...my 6.2L Raptor does all that and can haul butt through the desert at 100mph with ease. I love the F250 and maybe I'll get one when I grow up! Never!
@Stuka8710 жыл бұрын
TONS of trailers over 12k lbs. Yes they are 5th wheel, but lots of them out there. Good friend has a 19k pound toy box that he uses to camp in and haul his RZR. The larger tires on the Raptor hurt it. Yes it has 4.10's, but 35" tires makes its gearing worse than the F250 with 3.73's and 32's.
@TheRetarp10 жыл бұрын
A pintle hitch will allow for 20,000lb + trailers without a 5th wheel. Typically found attached to 2.5 ton trucks but can be pulled behind a regular truck equipped with a heavy duty hitch receiver.
@gregrowe116810 жыл бұрын
Its actually really close in gearing if you do the math but bigger tires amount to more rotating mass and un-sprung weight which robs a little power so the Raptor's extra 30 hp probably makes up for that.

Here's my 2 cents on this head to head. I'm glad they did this comparison because I was looking into exactly these two trucks. I LOVE the raptor, obviously it turns heads its unique and its a blast to drive etc but at the end of the day I use a full size truck to do what a full size truck was designed to do: Haul heavy shit and trailers (in my case a flatbed all steel car-trailer with vehicles on it from the auction to my shop every week) plus car-parts, chains etc in the bed. I do regular maintenance and replace anything when it needs it. But i don't give a shit about the paint on the inside of box either. Its a truck. I will end up going with a 2012-2014 F-250 SRW with a 6.2L super duty as its the best for what I use it for and the best price. I get asked why not a F-350, the answer is simple, the 350 rides a bit rough when its not loaded and I'm not hauling stuff 24-7. When I'm asked why not a diesel when I could clearly justify it. Where I live (Edmonton Canada) diesel fuel for some stupid fucking reason is at $1.36 a liter (about $5.20 gallon) Its cheaper for me to fuel up in Maui! Anyways that plus the added cost of the truck plus the added maintenance for a diesel engine, it still makes the most sense to get a 6.2 F-250. the dually weighs more and I think only comes in a diesel. If I want to up grade to a 350, I could do that to the suspension anyways. I always laugh when I see someone in a dodge 3500, chev 3500 or F-350 with low profile douche shitty looking wheels, not a single scratches on the truck especially in the bed but with payments more then their mortgage just to be a poser driving the kids to soccer practice. ITS A TRUCK NOT A TOY!!! That's my 2 cents!
@gregrowe116810 жыл бұрын
Well said. The Raptor is a cool truck but if you're actually going to use a truck for hauling and towing then its just never going to be the best choice. And you pay a lot extra for the cool factor, the F250 was 14 K less as well.

The reason for the higher gear ratio on the Raptor is because it has bigger tires. If you calculate it out the rear differential ratio with tire size the Raptor's 4.10 gears and 34 inch tires come out to about the same as the F250 with 3.73 gear ratio and 31 inch tires.

Thinking of upgrading to 6.2l, and those v8's floored and redlined get me tense! Currently towing with Ecoboost and I'm used to half throttle and 2500-3500 RPMs up 7% grades with 6000lbs.
@chuckdodge476610 жыл бұрын
honestly guys 8000lbs really isn't that much weight. I have a 06 grand Cherokee with the 4.7 v8 with the 5 speed auto and 3.73 rear end ratio. much less powerful than the 6.2 just because of the fact that the litres are a lot less. the jeep is rated to pull 6000 or so. I had around 8000 between trailer and load behind it and pulled just fine. granted I wasn't going up ikes gauntlet but I encountered some pretty hefty hills and it held 70 just fine shifting between 2500rpms and 3700rpms. not sure what gears those were didn't really pay that much attention at the time. so 8000lbs really shouldn't be that big of a deal for something with that 6.2 litre engine.
@joelsanford10 жыл бұрын
I think tow rating has a lot more to do with being able to stop and turn with the load...
@gregrowe116810 жыл бұрын
This stretch of interstate is some of the steepest in the continental U.S. That's why the trucks struggle so much going uphill just to maintain 60 mph at full throttle. Not to mention at higher altitude, naturally aspirated engines lose a significant amount of horsepower, I think they claim its a 30% loss. So basically this truck could probably tow 8000 lbs at sea level on level road probably about as easily as it could tow about 5000 lbs going up the Ike Gauntlet. I would say it could tow substantially more than 8000 lbs at lower altitude but suspension and braking would be dangerously overextended and they wouldn't do that. That's why the f250 is rated to tow so much more, it has a stronger frame, heavier suspension and better brakes, at a rated towing capacity of 12500 lbs.

Actually the ecoboost F-150 I believe has the fastest time. Its turbocharged engine helped in the high altitude, making it lose less power due to the thinner air and the trans helped keep the rpms up so it could maintain speed. I think they actually had to back off full throttle to keep from speeding, the only truck that could do that. The Chevy 6.2 has the most power but the trans kept upshifting and it couldn't maintain speed consistently. The Dodge and Toyota look good on paper but couldn't maintain speed going uphill either. I'm biased somewhat toward GM but it looks like Ford has them beat when it comes to heavy towing.

The reason it was floored and not down shifting was because a downshift would put it over redline (or it needs to be at least a few hundred rpm under redline) in a lower gear. Each gear will about 5-10 mph sooner with the 4.10 gear ratio. Watch where it down shifts and when it finally does it’s pretty much at redline.

I own a 36 foot Titanium Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer weighing in at 14547 (no cargo) I'm wondering how well the truck is going to tow it. When I bought the truck, I told the salesman at the dealer about the Fifth Wheel, and gave the weight, and he was the one that had the truck set up. So next spring I'll find out how it's gonna tow..... Thanks for the great video guy... It nice to see that there are good people out there that are willing to share information like this with everyone.....
@mxer65210 жыл бұрын
What makes these videos not mean anything is all in the gearing. They kept mentioning the chevy with the 6.2 drop more speed before downshifting. Well it was pretty obvious this truck was geared better with the 4.10s to stay at a higher rpm at 60 mph then the chevy. Now I know this isn't about comparing the raptor against the gm 6.2 but what I'm getting at is; power isn't necessarily the key as much as mechanical leverage is. One less powerful truck could be in the sweet spot at 55 where a more powerful one is at 50.

I understand and agree with your test but that is a perfect scenerio for manual shifting mode

i don't think the transmission is different i think the 4.10 gear ratio wouldn't allow you to downshift to second when you were around 60 the f250 with the3.73 gears could sit around 5500rpm the hole way up when the raptor would get to 60 and it would redline and upshift

Trever Adamo Correct Raptor has the 6R80 which is a licensed copy of the ZF6HP26 and the F250 has an in house designed 6R140 that was created to be an improvement on the Allison design.

how come the video seems to jump and repeat a few times? your last few videos have done that....

thats actually youtube rebuffering as it bumps up and down the resolution to your connections speed and not doing a good job of matching the time that it changes the resolution. I have the issue as well on other videos as well.

They are a hell of a lot better than the mapping used in GM's 6-Speed transmission.

At 12:03 it shows the chains slack on the hitch, what gives guys? With no weight distribution your WAY over spec. What went wrong with the Anderson that made you not want to use it?
@jandjdestruction10 жыл бұрын
those are break away chains, not weight distribution.
