Been an F1 fan since 1997. This reminds me of how F1 used to be at it's best (in 2014 it no longer seems like it should). Really enjoyed this Indy 500, and a deserved winner- may have to watch more of this :-)

Hedley Thorne F1 used to use the Indy 500 as a race in the grand prix circuit but was deemed to dangerous
@mobius02248 жыл бұрын
+Donte Burgess I know I'm replying to a comment made months ago, but I think it's important to add that it was only ever considered a championship GP because it was basically the most famous and most prestigious race in the world at the time. But it was never really a proper grand prix and was never really treated like one. Pretty much none of the drivers and teams who actually competed for the championships bothered to go to Indy where they'd be at a disadvantage to teams who built cars for ovals (and for this race in particular!) and drivers who almost exclusively ran ovals; I believe Ferrari was the only team to make a serious go at it in 1951 or 52 with a works entry driven by Ascari and three customer cars, but did pretty terribly. Likewise none of the Indy teams cared to run GPs on the other side of the ocean. So when F1 said they'd no longer be running ovals for safety reasons, nobody bothered to save the event's championship Grand Prix status.
@mateagoston71138 жыл бұрын
+Hedley Thorne F1 never had as exciting race as this, except Monza 1967, 1969, 1971 and some French GP in Reims-Gueux. (some are talking about 1981 Spanish GP, but that was not as good)

Hunter-Reay's thrilling duel with Castroneves to win his Indianapolis 500 (in 2014) was one of the best, most exciting finishes in the entire history of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing".

One of the best Indy 500 closers this century. Great race! Memo to ABC sports. This video would have been much better if we didn't have to watch the spouses/girlfriends of the drivers taking up half the screen in the closing laps.

The 500 is usually around the day of my birthday. That year, my mom asked me if I wanted to go to either the Indianapolis 500 or a concert. I chose the 500. One of the best decisions I believe I've ever made. 2024 will be number nine I've attended!

This was one of the greatest racing finishes I've ever seen, with Hunter-Reay and Castroneves trading daredevil move for daredevil move. And after this finish, combined with 2012's and 2013's, could the same dramatic finish be in store for the next few years with this type of car?

@JaySmoothe2710 жыл бұрын
Definitely did not, not at all.
@Noonecanknow87910 жыл бұрын
Jay Smoothe How? Monaco was won by about 8 seconds. This was one by a few hundreds of a second. I watched both races. Monaco was boring. Indianapolis was awesome. Typical F1 fan. They have to bash every form of Motorsport that's not European or Australian, and like boring races more than exciting ones. Canada last weekend was a great race, but the NASCAR race was still closer and more exciting.
@JaySmoothe2710 жыл бұрын
Sorry pal, didn't realize respecting motorsport made me a typical F1 fan. I really enjoyed the Monaco GP, it was absolutely fantastic, and so was the race at Montreal. I don't watch the Indy series or Nascar, but I'm not bashing oval racing. But I certainly could, since Indianapolis in an Indy Car requires almost zero skill while Monaco is a constant test of the driver's skill.
@Noonecanknow87910 жыл бұрын
Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize that you drove an IndyCar and a NASCAR and it was very easy for you. Well, then again. F1's Juan Pablo Montoya, who won at Monaco in 2003, flopped in NASCAR. Out of 6 years, he won 2 races. Both road couses.
@JaySmoothe2710 жыл бұрын
I've driven them in a simulator, at least, an Indy Car, and I know how difficult it is to make a Nascar cooperate. Either way, The Indy 500 just doesn't interest me. The last green flag run did, but the other stuff was just fluff, like deleted scenes on a DVD.

Ryan Hunter Reay is one of the greatest racers in the world. Started 19th at the 2014 Indy 500 and won it. Started 34th at Pocono this year and came 8th :)
@wormtownpaul10 жыл бұрын
Great race. But some of the worst television production values I've ever seen for a sporting event. The last seven laps generally had the race view take up a quarter of the screen and Hunter Reay's wife and Castroneves girlfriend take up another quarter of the screen (and filler take up the other half of the screen). That was screen situation on the key moment of the race, the pass of Castroneves by Hunter Reay in the last lap. The race and the pass were not the focus.

Growing up in the netherlands it's always been F1 for me. Ovals seemed like a silly form of racing anyway, but last weekend i learned the average speed record for indy 500 is 380 kph and if you see how close they race to eachother that is just insanity. The only thing i don't like is the amount of crashes, hope they can get that down. It sucks what happened to Franchitti.
@Coogmaster200010 жыл бұрын
With the new car, the amount of crashes have been reduced a good amount & the cars are much safer (the first 150 laps of this race was green), and Franchitti did crash on a street course last year. I agree, it's a shame, he should have been in this race.

My boy Jack Hawksworth was never in the running for this, but was an epic race! My heart was pounding in the final few laps! Having said that, I was having to stare at the screen and watch the finish to one of the biggest races in the world on about 1/4 of the screen...BECAUSE THE OTHER HALF WAS TAKEN UP BY THEIR WAGS SCREAMING AND FLAPPING THEIR HANDS?! Why do I need to see this? It's almost like the TV crews are saying 'LOOK THIS IS REALLY EXCITING TO PROVE HOW EXCITING IT IS WATCH THEIR SIGNIFICENT OTHERS LOOK REALLY EXCITED AND NERVOUS ARE YOU EXCITED YET ARE YOU?!' Yes, I am, even though the thing that's exciting is only being shown on half the screen. Jeez, get it together. And why interview the winner's wife immediately after the race? She's just as emotional and unable to puts things into words as he is.
