When driving this 2014 Jeep Patriot 4x4 I was hearing a really loud hum. Watch the video to check out what a bad wheel bearing sounds like, and what it takes to replace in this Jeep Patriot. It's not that difficult, just have to deal with the Chrysler rust.....

my jeeps is making the exact same noise and I think it's that right rear wheel, it's hard to pin point. I took it to a mechanic and he couldn't figure it out, I've been driving it that way for about a while now, so many thanks for putting this video together, going to order the parts and fix it.

Just a quick update, I went ahead and replaced the rear wheel hubs, it was hard to tell that they were bad just bu wiggling the tire while on a jack stand, once I took the hub off I could hear the grinding, I ended up replacing both rear even though only the right one was bad, problem solved.

Really do appreciate the video. In the middle of this job right now. My mother's Patriot needed it done, but the bearings are factory original... and everything is rusted to hell and gone. (The cotter pin dissolved after hitting it with penetrating fluid!) Oh well, no rest for the wicked, back at it. Thanks again.

Use a air ratchet on full beans to remove those over torqued lug nuts. A 1 1/4 inch socket is comparable to a 32mm socket. I like the pre pressed in bearing and new hub, makes this a doable DIY project, thanks for taking us along, nice job. Many times, an out of round wheel bearing will trigger an abs light since the abs sensor isn’t getting a consistent reading as it contacts the outside surface of the bearing.

Thanks for the video. I appreciate your taking the time to go though the steps of this process. Getting the tip about freeing the brake sensor line probably just saved my bacon. My 2017 is making that same noise. Have replaced bearings on several of my cars, so nice seeing that it's a nice easy job like my other ones. By far the worst is my wife's 2016 Explorer. Aluminum knuckle and steel bearing means it basically welds itself together. Lots heat, beat, repeat and penetrating oil to get those things out

on my 2012 patriot I thought the freaking noise was coming from the transmission and had the trans fluid changed (filter included)! My bad not having a professional checking the car before making the wrong decision, needless to say, the noise still there! Btw, I was due on my trans fluid change, car has 130k kms, manual says to replace at 104k. Here in Ecuador mechanics are full of s..t and always try to take advantage of customers giving made up diagnostics! GReat video, thank you!

I will put this here. 2012 Patriot and Compass only. I just got my front end subframe replaced at the dealer FREE. 2008-2012 models had subframe rot due to poor coating and the AC dripping onto it continuously. NHTSA made Chrysler issue a 10 year warranty. The Warranty is up to 10 years from the date your vehicles initial consumer service date (purchase). The clock is ticking on 2012's to get a free dealer inspection. This applies to rust belt states and Canada. 2013 had the problem resolved, all other have timed out.

I'm going to be doing the same job on my 2013 Jeep Patriot. New hub assemblies, backing plates, parking brake shoes and hardware. Both sides. The backing plates are rusted through, and with 200k miles it's time for a refresh. The backing plates are on back-order from the factory. I hope they don't take too long to get here! Nice video, though. Now, I'm more confident about tackling the job with limited resources!

I think the worse part of the job was knocking the bearing out of the backing plate so if you're replacing those, you should be good as gold. Rockauto.com has those backing plates for about $43 each side if you were still waiting for them.

Ok, just did the left rear, here are my observations: Don't bother popping the center insert out of the alloy wheel. Just bolt the donut spare on and you're good to go. Don't bother removing the ABS wire. The sensor slides out of a clip on the bearing and there's plenty of wire to move it out of the way. The bearing hub bolts are 11/16". It helps if you have a deepwell socket and a regular socket plus different length extensions. Having an electric ratchet saves a ton of little swings once you get the four bolts loose. The last thing I did was to slide the ABS sensor back into the clip. I had to back the car up on ramps to be able to see what I was doing. You won't be able to remove the bearing hub without first removing the sensor and you won't be able to reinstall the hub if you install the ABS sensor first. So, you need ramps, jack stands, a jack, a socket set, penetrating oil, a big hammer, and patience. I guess I saved myself $500 in labor. As always, if you don't feel confident in your ability to do this kind of work then seek out a good mechanic. There's no shame in being honest with yourself. Update, 8/1/2023: The local dealer replaced the right rear wheel bearing after I took the car for yearly state inspection. When this started I replaced the left rear wheel bearing because that's where the sound was coming from. When the noise remained I visited a local transmission shop. He felt that, because the noise never changed when you turned right or left, a bearing in the differential was the problem. So, I spent $1100 on a new one, which is still in the unopened box. Although the noise came from the left side, the bad bearing was actually on the opposite side. In the interim I bought a Mopar extended warranty. It came in handy six months later when the throttle body failed for the second time in 55,000 miles. I put up with the noise for four years, initially believing it to be tire noise. I guess that the (expensive) lesson is to replace the wheel bearings in pairs.

My dash lit up like a Christmas tree and sent codes. 4wd, ABS, Traction. I guess there are two kinds of bearing failure. One where the sensors are intact and functioning but growling, and one where the sensors fail to receive proper signals but little or no bearing growl.

If you use a good penetrating oil and let it soak you should be able to knock out out with a couple hard blows. If the backing plate is badly rusted it would make sense to just replace them.

Omg! Took my Patriot in to Cars Plus Guam. Told the service guy that there's a loud noise that sounded if I was driving a 4x4 truck. Also, that there might be something wrong with the front wheel as it makes a strange sound and when turn in different directions. He said, "your 4x4 was on." Today the noise is louder than before. My 2013 Patriot has a very loud roaring sound coming from the rear, but the noise doesn't change when swerving to the right or left. One tech told me it was a wheel bearing, and a different tech said it was not a wheel bearing but a spider gear in the differential. Both rear wheel bearings were replaced only a year and a half a go. I drained the fluid from the differential yesterday and filled it with new oil. There were no metal shavings in the old fluid. Do you having any idea what the problem might be? Thank you!
@JrZCarZ

Modern cars have a far better setup than that on a 1982 Rabbit I had. I had to take the entire spindle to the shop to press the hub from the bearing then press the bearing from the spindle. The disc shield was between the hub and spindle. One critique: you should never put a "torque enhancer" on a breaker bar. More of a disclaimer. I'm about to do this on my wife's Patriot with 47,000 miles. It seems to be coming from the left rear but (a) the noise actually goes away over 40 mph, and (b) it doesn't change in turns. It began after having new tires installed two years ago and has passed two state inspections by the dealer we bought it from. Part of me thinks it's tire noise because the tires it came with, which didn't have a particularly aggressive tread, were noisy as all heck.
