Just a quick update, I went ahead and replaced the rear wheel hubs, it was hard to tell that they were bad just bu wiggling the tire while on a jack stand, once I took the hub off I could hear the grinding, I ended up replacing both rear even though only the right one was bad, problem solved.

Use a air ratchet on full beans to remove those over torqued lug nuts. A 1 1/4 inch socket is comparable to a 32mm socket. I like the pre pressed in bearing and new hub, makes this a doable DIY project, thanks for taking us along, nice job. Many times, an out of round wheel bearing will trigger an abs light since the abs sensor isn’t getting a consistent reading as it contacts the outside surface of the bearing.

I will put this here. 2012 Patriot and Compass only. I just got my front end subframe replaced at the dealer FREE. 2008-2012 models had subframe rot due to poor coating and the AC dripping onto it continuously. NHTSA made Chrysler issue a 10 year warranty. The Warranty is up to 10 years from the date your vehicles initial consumer service date (purchase). The clock is ticking on 2012's to get a free dealer inspection. This applies to rust belt states and Canada. 2013 had the problem resolved, all other have timed out.

Front bearings on the Patriot are pressed in bearings, not the sealed units used on the rear. You need special press adaptors or have a shop do it.
@spaceflight10193 жыл бұрын
Ok, just did the left rear, here are my observations: Don't bother popping the center insert out of the alloy wheel. Just bolt the donut spare on and you're good to go. Don't bother removing the ABS wire. The sensor slides out of a clip on the bearing and there's plenty of wire to move it out of the way. The bearing hub bolts are 11/16". It helps if you have a deepwell socket and a regular socket plus different length extensions. Having an electric ratchet saves a ton of little swings once you get the four bolts loose. The last thing I did was to slide the ABS sensor back into the clip. I had to back the car up on ramps to be able to see what I was doing. You won't be able to remove the bearing hub without first removing the sensor and you won't be able to reinstall the hub if you install the ABS sensor first. So, you need ramps, jack stands, a jack, a socket set, penetrating oil, a big hammer, and patience. I guess I saved myself $500 in labor. As always, if you don't feel confident in your ability to do this kind of work then seek out a good mechanic. There's no shame in being honest with yourself. Update, 8/1/2023: The local dealer replaced the right rear wheel bearing after I took the car for yearly state inspection. When this started I replaced the left rear wheel bearing because that's where the sound was coming from. When the noise remained I visited a local transmission shop. He felt that, because the noise never changed when you turned right or left, a bearing in the differential was the problem. So, I spent $1100 on a new one, which is still in the unopened box. Although the noise came from the left side, the bad bearing was actually on the opposite side. In the interim I bought a Mopar extended warranty. It came in handy six months later when the throttle body failed for the second time in 55,000 miles. I put up with the noise for four years, initially believing it to be tire noise. I guess that the (expensive) lesson is to replace the wheel bearings in pairs.

My 2013 Patriot has a very loud roaring sound coming from the rear, but the noise doesn't change when swerving to the right or left. One tech told me it was a wheel bearing, and a different tech said it was not a wheel bearing but a spider gear in the differential. Both rear wheel bearings were replaced only a year and a half a go. I drained the fluid from the differential yesterday and filled it with new oil. There were no metal shavings in the old fluid. Do you having any idea what the problem might be? Thank you!
@JrZCarZ2 жыл бұрын
I agree with the tech. It could be wear on the rear gears or they are maladjusted causing the noise. Any good tech would have inspected the bearings and backlash to prove that theory though

Modern cars have a far better setup than that on a 1982 Rabbit I had. I had to take the entire spindle to the shop to press the hub from the bearing then press the bearing from the spindle. The disc shield was between the hub and spindle. One critique: you should never put a "torque enhancer" on a breaker bar. More of a disclaimer. I'm about to do this on my wife's Patriot with 47,000 miles. It seems to be coming from the left rear but (a) the noise actually goes away over 40 mph, and (b) it doesn't change in turns. It began after having new tires installed two years ago and has passed two state inspections by the dealer we bought it from. Part of me thinks it's tire noise because the tires it came with, which didn't have a particularly aggressive tread, were noisy as all heck.
