@TFLcar11 жыл бұрын
We fear that's not correct. A turbo can help compensate for the lack of air density but it does not negate the fact that the air has less density when it first enters the engine. While a turbo will force more air into the combustion chamber it will not increase the air density to sea level density.

I get really tired of this whole "fun to drive factor" thing that pops up in so many car reviews. It's certainly a pretty piss poor reason to suggest leasing the Forte instead of buying it. In the last 10 years KIA has brought the quality to a level that competes even with VW and Ford! Not to mention that i see them at the service only for oil-brakes change,despite the streets are flooded with them :) Now..,if you look at short term MPG,Chevy might be better buy,but you should check how much cost modern diesel maintenance like piezo injectors,fuel pumps (2000 bars) and the rest ..,then is the insurance and guarantee from KIA,which is unbeatable :)

The biggest issue is that in city driving DPF doesn't have enough time to burn itself (DPF catches and stores particulates and needs to burn them once in about 350-400 miles) properly and that clogs the flow. Your dealer can induce the burn through service computer but sometimes it doesn't help and you have to replace the filter (wchich is quite expensive). But it's not as bad as it sounds, carmakers are working on it for a few years now and it really got better recently.

Modern diesels have many sensors inside that check many parameters and based on them engine controller can modify injection parameters. Even if temperature varies slightly (mostly during winter) the engine never gets cold and incomplete fuel burn is not a problem in modern diesels. DPF clogging during city driving (for more than 400-500 miles in a row) is real issue.

Idling causes slight drop of overall temperature but inside combustion chambers temperature is the same because heat is generated during compression stroke. TFL, what is your view/understanding on why the Cruze Turbo Diesel was so slow at one mile above sea level (vs others have clocked it at sub 9 seconds at sea level)? My understanding (although I do not claim any expertise), is that the fact it is a turbo will remove most of the atmospheric pressure dependency for performance.

The reason for the higher price is because the car companies let Roman and Nathan drive the top-of-the-line models for each car. And technically, even the base model of these cars are not entry level. Chevy has two cars (Spark and Sonic) that are below the Cruze and Kia has the Soul and the Rio. Those four cars are just above the $13k price point.

The fact that the Cruze is not undergoing massive styling changes every year is a positive. Part of the reason that Japanese vehicles have been so successful in the past is that the design was on a four year cycle, vs most American cars changed dramatically every year. This is enticing to the buyer because you know that your car will not be out-of-date styling-wise soon, and also this design practise allows the resale value to be much higher..

I strongly recommend you get your fact straight next time. You rated the Diesel as 24mpg city, 36mpg highway. EPA ratings for the Cruze Diesel are 27 city and 46 highway. Nice try. Heck, even the 1.4L Turbo Cruze is rated for 26 city and 38 highway. You took the numbers from the 1.8L Cruze, which has the lowest fuel economy. Try again.

it WAS combined mpg "I could drive without the visual aids (41.7 combined mpg was the result, bettering the EPA's 34.4 mpg)". Motortrend did not test for mpg in the 3. The 2012 Mazda 3 obtained 34.4 miles to the gallon on average, they only got 41.63 (and yes I know .07 mpg is non-existant and literally makes no difference) and both cars are priced similarly when the Mazda is as well equipped as the Jetta. The worst the Jetta got combined was 41.3 in traffic.

That's what they're supposed to do, but they don't always work correctly. Most people in the trucking industry absolutely hate the emissions control systems. The cost of being compliant has literally put some in the industry out of business ,or it has forced them into a new path. I don't think particulate filters are problematic, I know they are. Calling a dealership for information about car problems is naïve. It's just like calling a cigarette company for information about cancer prevention.

You're suppose to drive on the highway, or at least 50 miles an hour, every 400 miles or so, for about 20 minutes to regenerate, if it regenerates frequently, either you do drive like Danika, or you need to have your DPF checked, also, get a DPF delete or choose not DPF (such as Urea or Bluetec) if you don't want to run into these kind of issues.

Now is it worth it to spend more on a diesel cruze over the turbo one? Regular gas is $3.30, premium is around $3.70, diesel is still $4.00. So you are spending more at the pump and for the vehicle just to get a few more mpgs?
@contractki11er11 жыл бұрын
Well the diesel gets a few hundred more miles than a gas engine. Let's say an extra 150 mile advantage over a regular gas engine which lets say gets 400 miles a tank. Assuming they go 15,000 miles a year, the diesel will need to fill up about 70% less (27:37) and lets say they both have a 12 gallon tank, in a year the gas engine will rack up $1465 on regular, and the diesel $1296, you saved $169! Hooray!

Anthony Bonanni Yep. The math has already been done by some auto critics. Because the Cruz Diesel costs thousands more than the regular one and diesel fuel costs more, it'd take you something stupid like 100yrs to just break even on cost from buying a Cruz Diesel. It's really dumb. So basically, everyone who buys a Cruz Diesel is going to lose their ass when they sell or trade it in.

The cost to maintain a VW is also ridiculous.
@JAKE20fivefive11 жыл бұрын
No, you're just being ridiculous now. I didn't need to drive recklessly to get my mileage. I found the short drives had the biggest impact on mileage. Diesels get poor mileage when cold because they tend to take longer to reach full operating temperatures. Short drives also reduced the time between regeneration. My mileage was a heavy mix of short and long trips. I gave the DPF many opportunities to heat up and blow out, but city driving was often unavoidable for me.

@AkioWasRight11 жыл бұрын
That's not true. Of course an engine burning less fuel will be colder. And overall engine temperature can be very different from temperatures inside the combustion chamber (That's why all diesel engines should come with a pyrometer, not just a coolant temperature gauge). Combustion temperature will depend on fuel and engine load. If a diesel engine is burning less fuel, and it's under less load, it will run colder. A cold diesel engine will incompletely burn fuel.
