2014 ram 1500 steering shaft u-joint

If your steering wheel has stiff spots when your turning and it won't return to center by itself after a turn, your steering shaft y-joint might need to be replaced.
The 2 bolts head are 13mm
If the front wheels are off the ground and the shaft is turning while your trying to remove or reinstalled the bolts, just put a small pry bar trough the yoke.

My ‘17 RAM 1500 v6 is already exhibiting hard steering. Turning in both directions is very difficult but can lesson up a bit. I’ve booked a warranty visit at the local dealer.

I went ahead and gave the old u joint a bath with about 2 cans of brake clean while turning the steering wheel. Then took white lithium grease and put it all over the u joint, turned the steering wheel, applied more, and so on. It works great now! Hopefully it holds up, I’ll reapply grease once it warms up. I’m not going to bother replacing it if it keep working.

@@Toolspecs Mine lasted 30k kms this way, periodically re-lubing. Definitely needs to be changed now, lots of steering play.

Would this make the whole steering wheel completely lock up? Or would that be the rack itself?

So after taking bolts off do I slide it up to release the bottom then pull down to release the top?

Yes exactly. You can tap in a chisel to spread apart the opening after you remove the bolts, this will make it easier to slide off

I remove it very easily, but when I put the new one I can't because it looks very short but it's the same size

Could this be making a, not really sure how to describe it...maybe grinding noise, while turning. The steering wheel feels a little stiff.

A grinding noise while turning is often due to a bad wheel bearing.

wondering if this is whats causing my powersteering to fail on my 2016… The shaft looks in tact but very rusted. Powersteering light is on and it can still drive but obv without powersteering its bad… Dealers quoting me at 3500$ to replace the whole rack.. Might be worth to change this myself and hope thats the issue?

This would not cause any dash warning lights to turn on. How's the P/S oil level, color and smell?

Will that cause some vibration when driving on unpaved road ? Cause mine doesn't get stiffed but ever since i went off roading and got stuck i forced the steering wheel to turn a lot , ever since that every time that shaft makes vibration I don't know now if it is caused by the u joint on it or any other part along the steering...

No the steering shaft should not cause any vibrations.

Would this cause a single knocking noise when coming to a stop felt in steering?

No this only affect steering smooth turn and back to center. A clunk noize during a stop can be from lots of different components.

More likely you have a upper ball joint that is wear out and causing the knocking when coming to a stop

@@BenAfricanCichlids Well I live in salt/rust land. Salt Air, salt water, road rock salt in winter and salt brine too. And I commuted with the thing when they spread the max amount of salt. 77k miles on it too. I'm not real impressed, just tried some thick axle grease there this morning freed it up a bit. Will likely have to order parts to really resolve it.

Just a warning to anyone changing out this shaft... DO NOT MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL while installing! You will most likely damage the airbag clockspring and you will throw a couple airbag codes and get a “service airbag system” message. I know from experience unfortunately.

How did you manage to make the light go away? & also how did you line up your steering wheel to its original place? Mine is off and can’t manage to find it. It always doesn’t match the direction of the back up camera line it goes opposite way

@@Robmer913 my backup lines kept going the opposite way also... I damaged the clockspring and the only fix was to replace it unfortunately. I made the repair myself, there's an excellent video of replacing one here on KZbin but do at your own risk and obviously always be careful while working with airbags.
