Nice video thank you. Rooting compound is just a sugar syrup basically. It seals the end and gives the plant sugar which tells it to grow roots. I haven't done a side by side comparison but I've had 100% success using natural honey, which can't be bad.

Wow, we are not professional blueberry growers but we have always just taken the shoots growing up at the base and transplanted them to pots. Sometimes they grow and sometimes they don't. We only do this if someone wants a bush. We need to prune ours a lot since we have so many berries. We give most of ours away since we can only freeze so many . I am in NC too.

Can blueberrys be rooted in the winter or early spring

blueberry are hardend down from H1 up to H5. so it can survive cold climate. when thats said, the soil does have to be abit soft and not rock solid frozen tho.. but that make sense right ?

Is there any problem with taking cuttings in late summer and rooting and growing them indoors through the winter, and then planting them outside in spring? I live in Minnesota and lost a couple of mature potted blueberries due to cold last year. They could be put in the garage if chill hours and dormancy are needed

how do you care for these through the winter. not everyone has a greenhouse. We live in upstate ny where temp can get down to 20 below. I do have a large heated garage, do I keep them in there? Do I mist them throughout the winter. Please tell me about caring for them where I live
@ncfruitgrower10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking. You can make a simple greenhouse out of white plastic and posts. Our nursery is not heated. We do shut off our water after the cuttings develop roots, the greenhouse just keeps the heavy winds off the plants, but they do go through winter as outside plants. We go down to zero here, I know dormant plants can stand that, but not blooming plants. Hope this helps. James
@jksatte10 жыл бұрын
ncfruitgrower Don't they need light even though dormant? You have to accommodate for the lack of light in the garage.

It is not the light they need, just the heat from the light. They will need light when they are planted outside. Thanks for asking. James

How long do blueberry cuttings take to root ? And how do you tell if the cutting has died ?in the Southern Hemisphere does it matter to take the cutting currently in May in it's cutting success rate?
@ncfruitgrower9 жыл бұрын
I have found that it takes about 6 weeks to form roots. If the cuttings wilt or turn black, they are dead or dying. We have about a 75% growth rate. Best cuttings are taken early morning during the first of August. Thanks for watching our video. James matthews
@cyrilstevenson58337 жыл бұрын
I have found that cuttings grow best when started the first week in November (Australia). It takes about 3 months to see any root growth while misting constantly. Use good potting mixed with 40% river sand.Best results are not to replant from the grow pot until about 5 months. you can put about 5 cuttings in each pot and seperate later. Some might die while repotting. Coffs Harbour

I do not know why the reply did not post, however you can root cuttings in or out of the sun, you can cover the rootings with something to hold in the moisture. They do not have to be 1 inch apart, they can be further, bu if you root a lot of cuttings, you will need a large box, keeping the air around the stem cool. we just do this way because it has worked for us for years. Just curious here,,, you state "blueberries only grow on new growth" but then state, " the branch your last berries come from will be next years first berries" so doesn't this conflict what you just stated? if it berries next year isnt that old growth ?
@ncfruitgrower8 жыл бұрын
Good morning Marlene, GREAT question. Here is how it works. The main plant will grow each year. Yes, that is old growth. However, new shoots will form from the main branches and produce berries. Each plant will form berry clusters, starting around May. Every week a new cluster will form from the main branches. The branches that formed the first, second, third and so on shoots will reverse the process the following year. Not the shoots, but the main branch. That is why you prune and remove the last year twigs. Feel free to contact me at 252-532-6951. Thanks for watching our videos. James
