I've owned both Mercedes and Audi cars in the past (albeit fairly low-end ones) and find the Model S interior comparable if not better than those cars. Most people balk at the lack of buttons and storage bins in the Model S (because it is so unlike any other car interior) but this is just a subjective thing that most will come to appreciate with use. Thanks for the video. It's awesome to finally get UK Model S reviews!

Love the Model S but the interior is definitely not on par with the Merc and Audi's of late.

Mayhemm007 Agreed ... lower end Audis have really disappointing interiors. I think the Model S's interior could be a bit better though, given how expensive it is. In particular the higher end Model S's, which are in the same price range as, for example, a Mercedes S-Class, which has a much superior interior. All in all though, the Model S has a lot of other things going for it which few other cars can compete with.
@koruki10 жыл бұрын
Mayhemm007 As mentioned I'd love a Model S, just they aren't selling them in my country yet. That said, I am not sure which model Audi you owned, I was comparing it to the Audi/Merc at the same price range as the Model S. The 2008 S5 we have and the new RS6 we ordered both much better interiors than the Model S we tested last year overseas. Unless they made a huge leap in leather/coaching and trim quality, I assume you may be comparing it to a lower end Audi? I'm hugely excited with the new Model S D version!

This review completely neglects to mention probably the most significant part of Tesla's strategy, which is the supercharger network that will cover the UK within the next year supplying an 80% charge in 20 minutes for FREE, forever.

Thanks for watching bebomac5. Our standard video car review is around four minutes long so the fact we pushed this one to more than seven minutes just reveals how much there is to talk about. Fortunately, the video you've just watched is only part of our Model S coverage. We have produced a written review that compliments this video on AutoTrader.co.uk and we have produced a more feature-led drive story, both of which discuss the supercharging network you mention. London to Birmingham is the first route Tesla has committed to serving with a supercharger by the end of 2014 plus the UK government has also announced there will be an EV charging point at every motorway service station before the end of 2014. Have attached the links below so would be delighted to hear your thoughts on the review and the newsstand app. Best regards, Jon. www.autotrader.co.uk/articles/2014/06/cars/tesla/model-s/tesla-model-s-2014-expert-review itunes.apple.com/gb/app/auto-trader-magazine-uk/id568372832?mt=8

Additionally, because the Model S is such an exciting car, we've also produced a drive story for our free monthly app Auto Trader Magazine. Here, we've gone into more depth about the supercharging network: London to Birmingham is the first route Tesla has committed to serving with a supercharging station (free to use for Model S customers) by the end of 2014 plus the UK government has also announced there will be an EV charging point at every motorway service station before the end of 2014. Here in Norway we seem to get a much better deal. A lot of the cars have unlimited free 4G internet connection, NetFlix and Spotify access are also complimentary for the life of the car and are transfered to the new owner if you sell your Tesla. Free supercharging at any of Teslas charging stations wherever you travel in Europe is also a great advantage as it eliminates your energy costs. Did I mention no VAT on the ticket price, the right to drive in the taxi/buss lanes and no road toll charges? My insurance covers free replacement of the battery or motor should they eventually fail - it's really a no brainer. P.S. Try naming your Tesla "Patsy" on the main screen for a nice surprise from Monty Python!

The optimistic range issue does not come from Tesla. In Europe there is this official range testing called NEDC and they estimated 312 miles which is not realistic. However because all other car manufacturers also advertise the NEDC rated range in Europe, Tesla is forced to do the same. This can be seen on this page: www.teslamotors.com/en_GB/models/features#/battery In the US testing is done much better by EPA and they measured 265 miles rated range. So in the US Tesla advertises 265 miles: www.teslamotors.com/models/features#/battery In the past EPA had a useless 2 cycle that would give higher numbers. But then they changed that to a 5 cycle test which is much more realistic. Hopefully NEDC will update their method too. In the video it says Tesla claims 300 miles but Tesla is not to blame here.
@JonQuirkUK10 жыл бұрын
Teo T. Thanks for your comments. The estimated NEDC range we used in the review are the published 'range' figures Tesla uses on its own UK website. It's the standard practise of every expert review we produce to quote the official figures, though we should accept (and consumers should be aware) that range figures, including equivalent estimated fuel consumption readings for petrol and diesel cars, should be taken with a large pinch of salt. Our real world experience of the Tesla Model S was hugely impressive: we covered 220 miles on a single charge, with at least 120 miles of that journey spent at 70mph, where energy consumption is much higher. We wouldn't have been able to do that journey with any other electric car on sale currently in the UK.
@Jason-gy9mw10 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon. You did an excellent job. I just wanted to mention NEDC so that people don't blame Tesla for overstating the range. This was a great video and you are one of the more enjoyable reviewers to watch. I hope you add more Model S videos. If you are looking for ideas for new videos may I suggest a video about how difficult it is to convert your front garden into a parking space and add a charge point? There seems to be too much focus on public chargers when there are almost as many Victorian houses in the UK as number of cars. The hottest day ever in the UK was recorded in 2003 at 38.5 degrees. Now the Met Office says after 2040 every summer will be like that. This is not a great future to look forward to. www.independent.co.uk/environment/met-office-deadly-heatwave-summers-to-become-the-norm-by-2040-9215109.html I wish more could be done to speed up adoption of electric cars. Tesla is doing the best they can. In a few years when Tesla's cheaper Gen3 model comes out I hope to see lots of great videos from you. Cheers.

Tesla test rides are free. Wish this review site had used an UK model with the steering wheel on the appropriate side for the UK instead of using an EU version with the wheel on the other side. Why doesn't any "review" mention the fact that UK and EU models have 6 airbags instead of 8 like in the USA! There are no knee airbags in UK and EU version. Frunk space is less in dial motor version and less crumple zone and uk and EU models dont have knee airbags. Dual motor model wasn't crash tested neither was the version with third row child seats which don't have any airbags in third row. One would expect a formal uk automotive review website to do a proper review with an uk model instead of EU MODEL tested in this review.
@AutoTraderTV9 жыл бұрын
veryannoyingname Thanks for your comment, the test cars we have available from manufacturers are often not in UK specification and we have to rely on what the manufacturer want to supply for review purposes.
@veryannoyingname9 жыл бұрын
Auto Trader I understand that you get to test only what is supplied by manufacturer. But in a review for this car why does EVERY FORMAL REVIEW ignore the elephant in the room about the missing 2 airbags in the UK and EU MODELS compared to the USA models even though the non USA models cost more. EUROCON crash testing in the EU does not give any points for knee airbags unlike in the USA NHTSA TESTING. If Tesla is removing 2 airbags for UK and EU models then isn't that worthy of mentioning in any review by an automotive site! Or is a review just meant to be advertising for tesla for the freebie test vehicle provided. I expected more from a review from your website. Unfortunately it's just like any fan boy video instead of an automotive website formal review as safety deletions in UK and EU MODELS are not even mentioned. Your reviewers need to research the car specs before doing reviews.

What they don't tell you is how the batteries are made and about all the shit that goes in to them, also where do they throw them away when they are finished ? All those nasty chemicals and metals can't be good for the environment when there siting in a hole somewhere :L also how does the range perform when you have 7 people in the car, on the motorway doing 70mph for 3 hours, it's raining, so the wipers are on full blast, it's also dark so you have headlights on. You also have the heaters because it's freezing cold outside too. Also you have a boot full of luggage and a roof box on. Now a good diesel petrol car would probably still get at least 30 mpg and could then stop and full up half way in about 5 mins and do the second part of the journey. What happens in this car when your on the motorway, you can't find a charge point. When you do find one or is being used by some one else. Also are you going to stop at the services for 11 hours whilst the thing charges ? Lol Electric cars will never work why would you pay more money for the inconvenience of owning one :L
@joeweldon598610 жыл бұрын
i sense ignorance
@baileygarner566010 жыл бұрын
number one point I should point out is yes. you are correct to an extent about the batteries damage to the environment. HOWEVER you lack the knowledge that the battery is 90% reusable. Not to mention how either way it will always be better for the environment than an ICE car. This is one of the only cars that gets more efficient as you drive it. Now a lot of the things about the motorway you pointed out may be true but what I question is the extreme detail you go into. About the only thing that would effect the range are the 7 passengers, luggage, and roof box(extra drag weight). Otherwise the windshield wipers and lights consume maybe 2-4 miles which won't really effect anything. Now yes, you may have to stop, but just because you need a little charge to get to your destination doesn't mean you have to charge your car all the way up. Just calculate how much you need, and stop it then. While the superchargers aren't everywhere, neither were gas stations when cars first became viable options for traveling. Give it time. Tesla will grow, along with charging stations that are fast. Technology takes time. Now another thing is about the diesel. You do realize that cost you... right? With super charging your trip can cost nothing. Obviously while your waiting for your car to charge you may get a bite to eat, but I've never seen an expensive restaurant on the highway, so expect to pay A LOT less. Either way you'll probably want to stop with any car. Snacks required! Another thing. You bring up why would you pay more for something that is more of an inconvenience? Heres why. The Tesla is one of the best resale cars in its class. If you plan on buying one, and somehow run into some problems with it, resale it! You may make almost the same amount you spent on it! ALSO you will barely pay a dime in maintenance cost compared to your ICE cars. Thats why this car is basically rated at 50k. This car was made to cost less, be safer, more practical (I don't know a ICE car that has a trunk and a frunk), and just be great. Now next time you comment just keep in mind this is a 10 year old company. Don't expect then to catch up to the volume of production of other companies. But this is what makes it great. They've already proven they deserve a spot in automotive history because of their technology. It beats everyone else's! If you can't applaud them for that, then you just have something against them. Give it time and electric cars will be cheaper, and better for all of us. Nothing happens instantly
@Hirotoro469210 жыл бұрын
The batteries are not 'nasty'. They use small amounts of cobalt. They are almost completely re-recyclable. You obviously know nothing about electric cars and refuse to learn anything about them because all of your points have been addressed tens of thousands of times across the internet. Our UK is a small island. You could drive this car from London to Manchester without having to stop to charge. You couldn't do it with 90 mph average speed and air con/roof rack. Etc. This car is not for someone who doesn't plan their trips. They should focus on a big diesel instead. Common sense.

Definitely look into getting a Tesla model X,S, or even a model 3? It is worth a look or two +John Green ! Plus they have refreshed the body style of the Model S and they have just released the 100D which gives you 335 miles of range when you go 65 mph. But if you like speed instead of range the P100D can go 0-60 in 2.4 seconds ! :O They do have a supercharger network in every state in the USA, Europe, Asia, Australia, and many more, very cheap to use and you will save a ton of money using electricity instead of gasoline. Chademo, and other different level charges can also be used too. There is an incredible 8 year unlimited milage warranty too. Btu if you want to pay half the price of a Tesla model S look into the Tesla model 3 priced at $35,000 with no options, and with any of there cars you can get autopilot (1.0) or enhanced autopilot (2.0) which makes driving a lot less stressful.

Not sure I agree with you there, branded. You may be referring to the two incidents in 2013 that caused two models to catch fire after very severe impacts. Tesla responded by increasing the standard ground clearance using a wireless software update, plus installing (and retro-fitting) a triple underbody shield consisting of aluminium and titanium, to compliment the ceramic firewall that already existed between the battery pack and passenger compartment. As modern cars go, the Model S is very safe.
