2014 WRX STi P0024 solution replacement of camshaft oil control valve for bank 2- why did this work?

*EDIT* The error p0024 is a bank 2 exhaust OCV issue. Changing the OCV in this video should not fix a p0024. It did for me but there's no good reason why it should have. If you get p0024 check the exhaust OCVs - there are 2 of them on the bottom of the engine. I believe bank 2 is the right hand side looking at car from front. Its just as easy to change but its a different part.
I had no CEL issues after this repair so I assumed all was good. 2 years and one engine later I now have a p2090 which is also an exhaust OCV issue. This times its an open circuit so it could be the solenoid that gave me the p0024 has no given up completely. Hard to say.

Agree with a prior comment. The video is confusing. He replaced the solenoid on top of bank 2, which is the intake solenoid p/n 10921 on the cylinder head chart for 08+ STI. The code P0024 is for exhaust solenoid (p/n 10917A) which is directly below the intake at the bottom of the block on the driver's side.

How did you fix a P0024 by replacing an intake oil control valve? P0024 is an exhaust solenoid code. The correct solenoid to replace is under the head.

This is a really good question. It shouldn't have. I was dumb when I made this video and now Im slightly less dumb. There are 4 OCVs - intake solenoids on top of the engine and 2 exhaust below - and the fault I listed suggests a difference value was the issue. So it could have been a fluke.

Have you thought about just taking out your old valve & cleaning it with brake cleaner? I have the same code on my '13 STi. Thinking of taking out the banjo bolt / inspecting the filter as well as cleaning the actuator first before ordering new OEM parts. But im glad your faults went away by simply replacing this valve Im trying this tomorrow thanks for the guide!

Hey man, my '10 STi is throwing this same code and I thought the exact same thing as you in terms of just cleaning it. Did cleaning it resolve the issue? Or did you buy a new solenoid? Thanks.

@@ethanwillms1649 Hey man, actually the issue went away for a good 4-5 months before it appeared again. I simply deleted the code.. The valve itself is worth north of 300$ .. Just clean it, delete the code and hope it doesnt come back again. Anyway it is not a critical problem if the valve persists. Worst thing that could happen is the valve is alwais fully open so timing is alwais advanced, thus your idle could be acting weird or your car die on you in traffic. If it doesnt do any of these, dont mind!

Hers a little more info on the part I used in this replacement. I purchased in on Amazon from Partplayer. It is described "New Variable Valve Timing VVT Solenoid For 2010-2012 Subaru Legacy & 2011-2017 Subaru WRX, 10921AA140, 916-901, TS1053". I have only driven the car about 30 miles since the VVT oil control valve was replaced but so far I have had no errors.

Mine is throwing the p0024 replaced same solenoid and checked timing and gear teeth both good and fresh oil change anything else that it might be maybe solenoid on head or am I missing something ?

Did you end up fixing the issue? Mine is throwing the same code but I only cleaned the bottom exhaust solenoid and still no luck

Yeah I missed something. My bad. p0024 is telling us its an exhaust OCV and what I did right here was replace one of the 2 intake OCVs. So theres a very good chance this shouldn't have done a damn thing it clearing a p0024.

Yeah, I didnt attribute it to this repair at the time and I cant say for sure that the idle bounce started right after this. But now you mention it I'd say its possible theres still another value causing problems or this one is a cheap one.
