why is comfortable always considered to be dull by car journalists? they are not synonyms you know;P i would bet most people would choose comfort over sporty. sporty sounds cooler, but gets tiring when you have to feel bumps in the road every day(unlike journalists who only test the car for a day).

Johan Herstad I too agree, that MOST people prefer soft on hard. but take me on the other hand, i can't understand where crazy body roll is comfortable... My friend owns an MDX for example, when u go on a ramp if you don't hit the brakes you end up in a ditch... Now i drive 300-450km a day(!) for 4 days a week, and will not tolerate an un responsive car when drivers around me pick their nose on the left going 80km/h (in a 100). so i will ONLY get german cars. after MANY disasters with audi, i am left with bimmers and benzes. i can afford better cars, but with my mileage value drops too fast. What i don't forget is to check the competition to make sure every 18 month i choose whats right. Bottom line, comfortable is subjective, not soft. Thanks.

So far this year, the market has spoken, and the Lexus NX has been the chosen one over the X3 by almost 2 to 1 in sales. Motor Trend recently compared the gas NX turbo to the X3 with the 3.0 turbo and chose the Lexus NX as best in class.

I guess reliability is no longer a factor in comparos. I'm not saying it should have changed the decision, but Lexus is #1 according to JD Powers. And if I am going to spend $40k+ on anything, I'd like to not always be at the dealer having warranty work done. I've owned 3 BMW's so I know what it takes to maintain them. Never had any problems beyond routine maintenance on my prior or current Lexus product.

I know the NX is a mild hybrid but, it does put the fact out there that the entire hybrid movement is a gimmick... Hybrid have almost no sales outside the US were diesel and ethanol engines are available more commonly, we have been enjoying great gas milage for ages without having to play a premium for batteries

Neezy Ko Well, there are a lot of clean diesel engines that sell in the us... and i call it a mild hybrid because the system is more for show than for getting better milage... and the hybrid movement its not about saving money, its about saving fuel and reducing emissions, the premium you pay for a hybrid usual out grows the depreciation of the car.. so you really never save any money.

I'm confused. Other reviews say that the BMW offers a more luxurious ride while the NX is harsh and you feel every bump. This reviews says otherwise. Guess I need to really test drive both to see for myself.

Ok I don't get it. Even though BMW is sporty that doesn't always translate to a harsh ride. You can balance ride and handling and in my experience BMW can tackle corners with ease and ride over potholes like a carpet smooth ride that won't shudder the cabin. And remain super quiet with all windows down. Also I think Lexus paid for them to say how much quieter and better riding the NX is because consumer reports said in talking cars that Bmw and audi impart a solid feel that lexus can only dream of.

I get that the BMW had better outright miles driven per gallon of fuel. But considering the price difference between regular gasoline of the Lexus and the more expensive diesel + Urea fluid, surely makes the Lexus the cheaper version to operate, no?

BMW's are somewhat limited by there choice of tires. Opting for run-flats reduces ride quality and increases road noise.

These 2 cars are not comparable. The Lexus does not have a usable tow rating. The reason the X-3 rides stiffer is because it's designed to tow and actually go off-road.

If only I can have 1 car then pick the BMW for a balance of sporty and comfort. Since I drive a WRX for weekend fun, I would take the Lexus for holiday roadtrip and daily commute since the top priority of this job is quiet, less feel on speed hump and potholes. And i dont think X3 is near as sporty as my TSX with tein suspension and WRX. If I want sporty SUV i would maybe go for a porsche instead.

Sounds like a fair comparison to me. Diesels usually don't get that high a combined mileage score. Wonder how much stop-and-go traffic they really did. Didn't see much city life there. 35 MPG is way above BMW's combined rating

Not as good as hybrids though. Seen a lot off these comparisons and this is the first time diesel beat hybrid. Looks like these vehicles did much more speed driving than city stop-and-go, which would give diesel the advantage. Diesels don't do city well.

I hate BMW and I hate to say it, but I'll take the BMW... More efficient, more cargo space, not as horrifically ugly (but not pretty either), more torque, faster, better handling and somehow cheaper. BMW is clear winner here.

Lexus consistently rate at the top of reliability and safety surveys which is a big plus when you consider these are utilitarian vehicles after all, reliability and safety should be a large factor when buying large family car.

Are you saying BMW's are perfect? Because if that is what you are saying, let me tell you that is definitely not the case. All BMW's below the 5 series series are nowadays made of crap materials and are terribly built. The interiors are made out of a lot of creaky plastic, and the cars are not very reliable at all. Also, the interiors are very, very outdated. The only thing good about these cars is the feeling of the steering and the exterior look.

This is the most stupid review ever. Why would you compare a Lexus NX Hybrid with a BMW x328d? Why not compare the NX with the X3 xDrive28d. Car magazines (C&D, MT, R&T) came up with combined mpg of 28 on the X3 xDrive28d, far from your quote of 35.6 mpg, which by the way is the average of BMW x328d (the 328 sedan turbo diesel with xDrive). The BMW X3 xDrive28d does not go from 0-60 1.5 seconds faster than the Lexus NX 300h as you also claimed. The X3 xDrive28d does it in 7.9 seconds compared to the NX 300h at 8.3 seconds. 0.4 seconds is a lot less than 1-1/2 seconds you claimed, which it would be if using the 328d (sedan) test result of 6.8 seconds but not if you used the 328d xDrive (sedan) test result of 7.2 seconds. You showed the BMW X3 in the video but you are using BMW x328d (sedan) test results... Did you know that EPA and BMW rates the X3 xDrive28d at 27 city and 34 highway?.. and yet you came up with a combined 35.6 mpg. I get it, you prefer BMW over Lexus, but lying is not cool when doing reviews.

The ugly as sin design on the 2015 Lexus NX 300h makes it possibly the worst SUV in this segment. If I'm buying a premium, luxury brand, I expect a beautiful design and interior luxury. And the Lexus NX 300h just has an ugly exterior design and that's a deal breaker for most people. The 2015 BMW X3 has a much more attractive design. Lexus needs to replace its design team ASAP.

With the BMW you get an overpriced vanilla car that looks two generations older than the Lexus and nobody will care about. With the Lexus, you get a superior interior, nearly equal gas mileage, and a car that looks significantly better. I saw both of these cars at a recent auto show. Without question the Lexus was getting far more attention.
