I don't really take sides on the big 3. However I think it speaks volumes that Ford did a fair test or so it appears. They brought their competitors for the same test and they even brought all top of the line trims, usually whoever is sponsoring the test will have their top end model versus basic work truck interior but similar engines but usually it is pretty biased. Very good job and great video

I have a 2014 ford F-350 6.7... Three turbos later. Last one blew just before Raton New Mexico... Babied into Raton to the Ford dealer who informed me that he had all the parts available because he replaces them in these trucks all the time. When I told him it's the third one, he said he wasn't surprised.

Good job on this video guys. I'll admit I used to watch your videos and cringe at some of the things you said before you learned about the power loss from elevation on turbos and gas engines. But you guys have read comments and done your research and your testing has gotten a lot better. I used to watch for laughs and at how much inaccurate info you gave but now I'm watching because you guys have researched and listened to people to make your videos better. Great job guys! This was one of the best tests I've seen from anyone.

They didn't tow 12,000 lbs - they towed significantly LESS. If you watch carefully, you'll see that the vehicle tag read, "GVWR", which stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, which is the highest capacity of the vehicle, completely loaded. You would have to subtract the vehicle's weight carrying capacity to know how much any of these trailers weighed. They probably were actually pulling 10,000 lbs or less. The best solution would have been to set each trailer on a truck stop scale before heading up the hill.

No. The GVWR is different than the GCVWR = Gross COMBINED Vehicle Weight Rating which would then include a trailer.

One of the presenters commented during the RAM test that "you can't tell what gear you're in... I wish RAM would do that". It does do that. Using the manual gearshift toggle on the shift column, you just flip the toggle once (can't remember if its up or down right now) prior to moving to the manual shift points. Once in that position, the active gear will be displayed in the instrument cluster. I don't have a 3500, but I do have a 2014 2500 RAM Longhorn diesel 4x4, and I love it (i.e., engine, interior, electronics interfaces, engine brake, storage, etc). I have put about 10,000 miles on it at this point. I have owned three GMCs before, and I never thought I would ever own a RAM. I don't see me ever going back to a GM.

After watching this video, and all the others, I really think you cant go wrong with any of these trucks. The Ford guy will like the F350, the Chevy guys will love the 3500 and the RAM guys will love their 3500's with the Cummins. They all seem so closely matched. Personally, I like the RAM purely on its looks. However I wouldn't whinge if I was given any of these beauties. We are now starting to see these appear on our roads down here in Australia........though at twice the price you guys pay.

honestly if I were going to buy 1 of these, I want to see this test with a family in the truck with luggage strapped down in front of bed and with luggage in the trailor or camper. also I would seriously not worry about the speed limit, I want to see what the truck will actually do, I personally am a Chevy guy but got ticked that the guy let up for the turn. to me there is a lot missing from these tests. also I'm a truck driver, I'd personally like to see a shifter like in a rig installed, I don't care for automatics when it comes to hauling heavy weight or trailors.

I am also Ram biased (own 3!) but this was an impressive showing on the Ford. Longevity is the concern for me because i put 100k a year on my trucks. If Ford stands behind their products like they did in 7.3 days i would be a costumer but right now after the 6.0 fiasco and the current problems they need to build costumer confidence back up. In full disclosure i am more of a Cummins man than a Dodge man but it all works great in the end! People who love their brand will stay faithful. Very little will get them to change. Performance was so close on this particular test that i would be more interested in fuel economy and durability!

I totally agree with your point, but I think Ford has already begun to put more confidence in the consumer with the 6.7 Powerstroke. Its going to no doubt take much more time to really know, but from all the people I know that own a 6.7 Ford and what I've read it seems like they may be able to right the wrong done from the 6.0 fiasco. I am a Ford person, but if I bought a new truck today I would take a serious consideration with the Cummins. I don't care for the truck, but the motor in it is the best one out there as far as what it is capable of with the history of the platform and its reliability.
@Mohammadkwt
@Mohammadkwt 10 жыл бұрын
this is ford own made 6.7 powerstroke as for invistar made 6.0 & 6.4 history that's why ford left them & started making their own 6.7 diesel engine with the technology they have & trust me if they want to bring the 7.3 back ( which they can if they want to ) it would destroy cummins & duramax easily .

Chance Lundgren To be honest ford made the best truck until a few years ago... it was the f550 that you could get the Cummins in with the allison transmission. That Truck was a winner! Problem was it was overkill for almost EVERYBODY! If they made that combination in a 1 ton i would have been in! But Alas no longer can you even buy them. And they are gold in the used market! But that was the best ford EVER! Nothing with it having Dodge or Chevy parts... it had the best the market had to offer!
@roydelpozo4816
@roydelpozo4816 10 жыл бұрын
mohammadkwt i would never go as far as Destroy... it would be competitive. THe only reason the 7.3 came off the market was emissions. They sure are prized motors by their owners! But as for bringing it back... they would bring back the size but the motor would be a technological non starter due to emissions. Hell... i would kill for the cummins 8.3 in a one ton... but ... they will never do it... But we can all dream right?

Not mustang gt's the Real GT's. Yeah They have Vette's But stock to stock Viper and the Gt's are out gunning the vettes.

Currently my tow rig is a 2011 F-250 6.7 PSD with 117,000 miles. I actually lost an injector on this hill last year towing a diesel pump. Overall my 6.7 PSD was trouble free till it got about 96,000 miles. Im sure out west there are alot bigger hills but around here this is the steep one.I wish they would max them out in towing capacity! Why have a test where you tow only half the rated load. I realize you guys have not control over it.

So yes, they are cheap. And Fords do break down. I see one almost every day on the side of the road broken down. I like different variations of all the trucks. They're American made. Somebody previously had mentioned different engines. From personal experience, I like the Ford inline-6 300 (4.9l). It has a decent bit of low end torque and performs well. I have always had good luck with it. I realize it isn't diesel, but quite often you need a reliable truck that doesn't need the requirements of an HD diesel. The 300 fits that slot nicely.

My question is why is the Ford pulling a different 5th wheel than the Dodge and Chevy. In the video they showed the Crusade Touring Edition with the weight of 12057 lbs. I looked up the Specifications on the Montana High Country that the Video has the Ford pulling and it's weight came in at 9970 lbs. So why is there a difference of 2087 lbs done in this competition. If numbers don't lie in my Opinion Dodge came in 1st and Chevy 2nd they were pulling more weight.

Now THAT is attention to detail. I also noticed that they had two different Fords, a maroon one and the blue one that they featured in the video. I'd like to know why Ford brought 2 trucks and only showed one.

Generally the weights do not show any options or add ons from the manufacture... i would like to believe these would have all been the same, otherwise these guys would have said something. Further, if you really want to get specific, the 5th wheel the ford was towing was much worse for aerodynamics... I really think this comes down to the ford being the fastest up this hill.

Kyle Handely, they already tested the 14 Ram against the 15 Chevy at the Ike tunnel and the Chevy was slower. The Ford should have been faster like they said because of the new engine. They showed the trailer weight at the beginning of the video and they were all about 12,000 pounds dry. The draw back of the Ford are obvious, C channel frame and a cheap interior. If you don't mind that then the Ford will suit you fine. If you want something in between, then get the Ram. If your a Bow Tie fan then then get a Chevy or a GMC.

"The Ram is the most truck like" exactly. The Cummins engine is in a whole other category. That's why Ram owners keep there trucks much longer. The big C is also a bit tighter, and has a longer break in period. Test these all out at 150k miles... Of course we can't test them all at .5 million because the gm and ford would be seized by then.

well ford just redesigned its super duty from the ground up for 2017. so I expect it to be even better than the outgoing model. the interior has been greatly revamped so that will finally quiet the TFL guys up about the hard plastic interior trim that they keep whining about with the super duty every time the test it.. I honestly don't mind the hard plastic trim on the dash and upper part of the doors, because it's durable. going all leather this and leather that isn't going to hold up nearly as well in the long run as hard plastic will. I have an 2005 f-150 and it's hard plastic dash and door trim as held up for 10 years fine esp in this harsh florida sun where the strong uv rays down here can eat up an interior of a car in no time. I couldn't have said the same if it was all leather.

The best part about the new 6.7l powerstroke is that ford has it tuned down for the time being to wait and see if Cummins can get their shit together. And if that inline six can even come close to 440 hp, Ford will just add a slight computer upgrade to give it even more HP. Its just a big game at this point. (watch for Ram to steel Cummins design and try to make a better HD engine to compete) And i wanna see the f450 up the gauntlet fully loaded to combined 40,000 lbs (un-compared to Ram or Chevy, thats not fair)

cummins and duramax are both just about maxed out when you get those engines stock. maybe they could put a tiny bit more hp in them. powerstroke can early have another thirty or forty hp added factory tune. and yeah 'hownami' we aren't talking marine applications bro, we are talking about engines offered in pick ups.
@mentap4163
@mentap4163 10 жыл бұрын
hownaml Cummins 'high output' is called the 'high output' because that was Cummins best attempt at over powering the first generation of the Powerstroke. ( and it worked) As soon as Cummins puts bigger injectors, rods and all the other necessary components in their stock engine; it will never break 400 hp. And i doubt they will do that because the engine is too reliable as it is. Just wait til Powerstroke offers a 'high output' as well. hahhah

hownaml They offer 3 different engine ratings for Cummins, hahha so why not offer a 4th and make it the marine 6.7? How many different engines do you Ram heads need? Most Rams on the street dont even have the HO engine in them. I agree with Paul M, Cummins will try and squeeze a few more HP into that HO engine. And then Powerstroke will have a factory flash for the computer system to give it more than 440 HP. Its all a game that Cummins is losing at right now.

I was wondering if it would be possible for you to do a real world gas mileage test while towing a trailer. I think the trailer weight could be about half what the truck is rated for. Drive a course around 50-100 miles on a freeway more level than the Ike Gauntlet, set the cruise at the speed limit and see what kind of gas mileage you get with each truck. I realize you might not have time to test this but it is just a thought I had. Thanks for your consideration

To all the Ford guys talking about how good they are, tell me more about how reliable the 6.0, 6.4, and early 6.7's was. Sure you can bulletproof them but the way I see it if I'm going to spend 50k on a truck they should be bulletproof from the factory. Chevy's are more luxury imo, and Ram's are flat out made for work. The Cummins is a proven motor, and being an inline 6 there is much less to go wrong. Paired to a 6 speed manual and if left in stock form they are the most reliable trucks you can buy.

This is actually quite accurate. Ford's had nothing but shit rolling off the line since the mid 2000's with the 6.0 and 6.4's. They finally got something sort of right with the 6.7 Scorpion. That's that. Cummins has always had a bulletproof powerplant, but since they completely screwed the formula up by installing a crappy trans and cab to it, that's where it ended for me. GM's been using proven powerplants in their HD Series trucks; how long has GM been using the Isuzu 6.6? Since 2001, they didn't need to completely overhaul the damn design 30 flippin' times to try to get it right. LBY, LBZ, and LMM, so far the only revisions to the same 6.6 displacement and include; different cooling systems, fan designs, turbo, and injection method. Isuzu and Cummins have their shit figured out, as for Ford; they kind of need to figure their sales adages and warranty gaffs out soon, or more people will leave your shit behind for good.

But the think with the interior is when you have a truck like these they are meant for Landscaping, Construction and so on. If you have sharp tools and stuff like that. If you have stitching and leather it will rip and tear. Now if you have plastic, yes it will scratch and marks but its cheaper and easier to replace. My view on it is that plastic is better for trucks like that.
