What a cliffhanger! 🤯 We had a 30 kWh as our only car with two kids (2 and 7 years). Went on trips with stroller, baby bag and everything. It can take 60 kg (I think) on the roof, so we also put stuff in the roof box. Didn't steal that much range since the car is so boxy anyway. We were really happy about the car, but had to upgrade to a car with more space and longer range at last. The 30 kWh supposedly have much better battery chemistry, and will not degrade that much. We had about 130 km in winter and 200 km in summer.

Kia dont give a roof weight capacity on the Soul, and explicitly state no roof racks or tow bars. I have been tempted by a temporary soft rack to use when visiting Ikea.
@ianemery2925
@ianemery2925 10 ай бұрын
@@Antiorganizer I believe that is true - I have seen the same said on some reviews - what I am unsure of is if that overcapacity is maintained as the battery degrades, or if my Soul has really lost 4KWh, and not 0.9. There may be differences in the charging circuitry, though; Souls have a lot of problems with blown OBCs - mine is in for one right now; KIA already lowered the AC charging from 7KWh to 6.4, to try and rectify this. I did 84 miles of spirited country road driving one day last summer; I started with 100%, and finished with a claimed 20%/32 miles of range remaining.

@@asaltvik Isnt that figure for the non EV version?? I thought that had a metal roof - the EV version has a plastic roof panel to save weight; hence KIA saying no roofboxes/rails. I have tried asking KIA UK, but they failed to answer - and several KIA dealerships - who all parroted the owners manual.

This is brilliant: a (hopefully to be continued) review of older EVs from the second hand market! Many people outside Norway (including myself) will now be looking for the first used EVs coming to the market (in Germany, for example, you can now get 2021 KIA Soul EVs with the 64kw/h battery for half the price new, around 22.000 … so please continue these reviews, in particular of 2 to 3 years old EVs! 🙏

Haha, what happens at the end of this video happened exactly to a friend of mine with a 2017 Kia Soul EV. Her car died on the off-ramp, less than a quarter mile from a charger, on a tiny hill. And the charger was just over the hill and down! It’s no joke with this car, if it says 0 miles it MEANS IT! If this happens to you, STOP the car once it gets below 5 miles, bust out your eyelet tow bar, and have someone tow you while you apply the brake so you can regen the battery a little. Make sure you do this before the car dies, or you won’t be able to turn it back on again to put it in gear and engage the high-voltage battery!

@@DgaDM @Suliro don't forget Björn tests the "cheapest" and worst examples regarding battery lifetime. This may be very educating, but does not show average EV-behaviour. This first generation Leafs, Souls, e-Golfs etc. were built by legacy automakers with little EV-experience. They learned a lot since then and improved their EVs. But it is very interesting to learn how to check an used EV in detail to learn about its true condition or SOH, to be able to set a fair purchasing price and calculate repair costs. So again big thanks to Björn the pioneer for paving the road again! Cheers Julius

Interesting to see Björn follow the same route as me. Started with a tight budget so the Leaf seemed best value. So that's what I bought. Great car except the degradation and range. Had it for two years than really needed more range for a changed commute. Looked and looked. - BMW i3: less degradation, CCS, bit more range. But: expensive and tiny - Zoe: less degradation but no fast charging - Soul: better range. Seriously considered it as it seemed a middle ground between the Leaf and Ioniq. Until I read reports about crazy degradation. So scrapped that plan. Finally took the plunge, upped my budget and bought an Ioniq. Looking back its the best decision I could have made. its such a great car. Very efficient and nice looking too. Reading the comments it might be that there's actually a middle ground in the updated 30kwh Soul but I'm not sure how they're priced second hand.

Just did the same test on my 2015 Soul with original battery @ 127.000 km. Result: 140.3km × 150 Wh/km / 0.95 = 22.15 kWh. That could mean 22.15/26=85% -> 15% degredation. Happy with that :). I guess our tempered climate in Iceland is good for batteries with bad thermal management. 99% of the time the battery has been between 20 and 80%. AC charging has been 90%+ of all charging.

I'm not sure if you remember this Bjørn, but as you have stated before, it's not the milage on the car that matters, it's the chargeing habits of the previous owners. My soul is a very good example of this! I bought a Soul 2016 model 27kw with 133 000 km on the odometer. The SoH on the car was 96% and the car is awesome! Now it have driven 165 000 km and sadly after lending it to a family for a 2-3 months it have dropped to 92% SoH. They fast charged almost every day and didn't listen to me much about dropping the Fast Charger and rather charge at home on AC so the car only charged to 80%. I believe they have let the car stay parked on 100% alot resulting in the 4% decline in SoH in a very short ammount of time. I have it back now and I'm reminded why I love this car so much! It's my daily driver to work wich is a 75 km one way. I live in Finnmark where we have temperatures down to -40C and I still manage to drive to work with my 80% charge. Thanks to the programmed preheating I can sit in a nice and warm car eaven when the temp drops to the extreme! I love that there is a Driver Only button for the climate to more efficiently drive the car! I have changed the OBC myself and that was increadibly easy! Took me 1.5 hours and I'm not a mecanic nor have a I worked on cars before. So this car will be with me for a very, very long time! :D

The cabin air filter, wind shield wipers should be replaced every few years, especially in moist climate. The air filter area condenses after AC operation and mold forms giving off the bad smell. The air filter when wet is basically a petrie dish. The cabin air filter is a weak spot for Model 3/Y. Does Marcus have a ozone generator? that is usually used by realtors and detailers to get rid of the smell. Remove the filter, clean as much of the ducts as you can possibly can (baby wipes on a stick + bleach), then seal car with the generator with re-circulation AC running, after run for a while, full blast hot to dry out any residual. To keep the bad smell away is to keep the cabin air filter as dry as possible, so run heat to dry it out before car shutdown (especially in the summer and can be done remotely with Teslas).

I live in Los Angeles, California. I have 2017 Kia Soul ev+. In 2020, degradation was at 40%. Kia replaced with 30 kw battery, because they didn't make 27 kw battery. Then, in December 2023, There was a major recall with 30 kw battery. So, Kia replaced BMS, twice in two weeks. After, second time failure, Kia has my car at the dealer waiting for a new battery. Love Kia Soul ev+ more than Tesla Y or 3 (I have both). Considering, Kia EV9 now. Of course, I will never sell Kia Soul ev+.

I also have a 2017 + and had the exact same issues, also in CA. My 27 kWh pack degraded into the 30s and was replaced in 2020 under warranty. I kept hearing everyone was getting 30 kWh packs, but I was told that is not the case, and I got another 27 kWh refurbished. Fast forward to the BMS recall. BMS replaced and then two weeks later i got the check EV and turtle. Been in the shop for weeks now awaiting a, now third, battery. I'm considering trading it for a 2019 with the 30 kWh pack. I'm hoping to learn if those have faired better. Also, that will increase my warranty period as this car really seems to rely on it.

It did not take many minutes to see that this car was a damn good car that outperformed most ICE car on everything except range and i desided to buy one. But unfortunately KIA had replaced it with the new version that was super expensive and I ended on a MG, unfortunately without a heat pump.

I had the 30kWh Soul for two years, very nice car, then moved to and still on the 64kWh 2020 model . Cant really find anything thats worth the extra money, wouldn't get appreciably (if any)more range, a realistic 280 plus miles in summer, 250 in UK winter. Not many new cars with that range. I was getting about 90-120 miles from the 30kWh Soul so that model rather than this on the video would be ideal for Bjorns use and he would not have to top up on the return.

It so happens that I drive a similar Kia Soul, but with a 132 HP petrol engine. Quite a nice car, especially in the top XL trim level with a traditional automatic transmission, although it lacks some power - the electric version is probably more dynamic. The disadvantages include a very hard suspension, a small trunk and poor anti-corrosion protection. The advantages - spacious interior, rich equipment (considering the age of the model) and unique aesthetics (whatever you like). Very interesting how the hydroelectric juice version will perform.

@@phillipbanes5484 2015. In the US there's a version with bigger engine -- 2.0 L, much powerfull. But also heavier, especially of the front axle. The 1.6 L 132 HP version allows you to travel freely at a speed of 150 kph without great acoustic discomfort, but the fuel consumption is then unacceptable a bit ;-) During normal urban operation, the car requires approximately 9.5-10 liters of fuel per 100 km.

From what I have heard from people having KIA Soul themselves: There is two boxes under the rear seats controlling the batteries that has somewhat under dimensioned cooling that degrades when they heats up over the years and you then loose about 50% of the car's range. So this might not be the batteries but these two boxes. Only Valdemar would know, right ?

A similar age car in the UK recently had a battery failure JUST as the warranty was expiring. Kia are only offering 50% off a replacement battery, but quoting £13,000 as the full replacement cost. I do wonder if that is for a refurbished pack though; and probably a 30KW pack as well, as they seemed to have run out of 27KW packs some time ago. I do wonder if these cars have spent their lives being rapid charged to 100%; my 2016 Soul still has 26.1 KWh of the original 27 KWh useable capacity left, according to my battery app. (Roughly 38k Miles/62K Km). Of course, my OBC blew in August 2023, and I am not expecting to get if fixed before March 2024, as the garage have only today got Kia approval for a warranty repair - warranty ran out 1st November 2023. (Delivery estimates from Korea were 10-16 weeks last time I needed an expensive warranty part)

At this point, with some older EVs like the Soul, you’d simply be better buying the petrol version of the same age. A lot cheaper and they’re reliable too, with a similar equipment level and no range anxiety. I tested the EV when it first came out and even then I was unimpressed with the 100 mile range. I didn’t think the battery would age well, and they don’t, unfortunately.

The Manufacturers need to be forced to make better SOH Software. Checking the Cell voltage while driving and on high loads should bring bad cells faster to the attention of the user. Monitoring the voltage per cell and find out a bigger volatge difference while charging and driving is no big implementation. Checking the inner resistance is also no problem while driving and comparing voltage and current. Giving the customer a bad battery and he has to find out by himself if the battery has bad cells...its a shitty practice.

The Kia Soul is the sibling of the Hyundia Ioniq. Just like the Kia Niro and Hyundia Kona. So the Soul is a good deal, its a bit less efficient and a bit less space than the ioniq, but all things considered a great car!

Strange all these "D E D" batteries. My old 2014 Leaf with 90K miless / 150K KM still has 11 bars with estimated capacity of at least 17KWh remaining. I get between 50-80 miles on a full charge. The climate in the UK is warmer so imagine in Norway the batteries should have lesser degradation. Seems like these EVs are not looked after well at all. The biggest battery killer is to let your battery sit at 100% or 0% for long periods.

2014 should be an updated battery version. That makes a big difference. Battery chemistry is super important, its not necessarily how its looked after in this case, or what are you comparing your car to?

Well... There's a lot of old 2013 - 2016 Leafs for sale in Norway with HUGE degradation, type 5 - 6 dot's remaining out of 12. I've seen a Leaf with 86k km and 6 dot's.

@@GoldenCroc As far as I know, they are all made in Japan or England, so yes: they are all imported to Norway. 🙂 These cars was marketed as "What can go wrong, they have less moving parts, no turbo"-cars etc etc etc. Just BS.

@@bjrntoreborge4281 I am sure you are joking with your reply, but for those that might read it and didnt get it: Imported after sales to end customer, i.e not originally sold new from dealer in Norway. Lots of them supposedly came from hot climates like Southern US states and their battery had already taken a beating before landing on Norweigan ground, which would explain a lot regarding early Leafs. Considering the last part of your reply, I am inclined to think you dont know if that was the case or not (the "bad examples" being mostly imported ones), or you would have mentioned it in your reply. It was pretty obvious what I meant in my reply after all. As to the rest of your comment, I can only say: Never believe the hype, and that goes both ways.

I was wondering when I saw the last video, is it really an advantage in low milage 8 year old EV? Wouldn't that indicate it's been sitting at either 100% or close to 0%, maybe 5-20% for long periods of time? Which would cause degradation in itself.
