I had one 20 years ago ,I only ever replaced a starter motor. It never broke down anywhere. Mostly a misunderstood vehicle. It was only 2/3 the cost of its nearest competitor but some owners expected it be on a par with a Mitsubishi or something.. I use to spend about 30-40 minutes a month on maintenance ,slight brake adjustment, check diff to body bolts, I use to grease something ,cant remember what. Those that claim they are unreliable usually never owned one, or if they did ,they had one that had been abused. I was lucky enough to meet someone who worked in a family owned Lada dealership in eastern Europe and he showed me where to check for wear etc. The weak point was the gearboxes, mainly because of the low quality Russian bearings. Mine had SKF bearings and it was much quieter. I had mine for 5 years and then sold it for not much less than I paid for it.

Beauty in simplicity. I wish we could get these in Canada
@CaptHollister8 жыл бұрын
They were sold here in Canada along with the rest of the Lada range for many years The Niva was very good off-road and in snow, but it was tedious on the road. It also had a small tank and relatively high fuel consumption, so if you were trying to do Montreal-Toronto, you'd be making a couple of fuel stops. The biggest problem, though, was Lada's terrible built quality and general unreliability. If you were mechanically inclined, you could keep one of these running forever, but at the cost of frequent tinkering. There are still some around, although they have become rare. If you really want one, though, you can still find one.

+Lyrically I'm really sorry but you're not right. I'm not saying that Ladas should be updated with the modern stuff like the airbags but there's one thing you've left. Unfortunately, Ladas are infamous for their poor quality. Almost anything can break in a BRAND NEW CAR (it may not as well though), even though it might still have its warranty. Of course, in recent years the situation has started to change and the quality has been improved but the Ladas are still not that kind of a car to say that it's reliable.

@photographylover12387 жыл бұрын
We had a 1989 Lada Niva and it never broke down once. Not the most refined car sure but it never broke down and was one of the most capable cars off road. I will admit it had rust issues which were a lot worse than other brands of cars faced. 10ish years old in a country that does not use salt on its roads and it had rust. Rust was eventually why we had to get rid of it.

@skeggjoldgunnr31678 жыл бұрын
This will never happen. The side impact strengtheners aren't there, the front impact and rear-end and roll-over ratings all probably score 100% fatality. The brake lamps are the wrong shade and too bright. The fuel efficiency is far from compliant. The emissions are not able to pass. Seat belts? Who knows! HOWEVER: you may get one from a dealer in Lima Peru and drive it here and register it as a farm truck...
@MeDicen_Rocha8 жыл бұрын

This would make a good farm vehicle if it sold new for under $5,000. I would love to add one to my collection but would not let my wife drive it. Lets face it, the car is a "coffin on wheels", like Russians would say it. It's a good toy to own though. Did he say the fuel economy is 9.5 l. per 100 km? It's a lot for such a small vehicle with tiny engine. My 6 cylinder 4x4 Grand Cherokee averages 12 liters per 100 km. Oh well, who cares. I would buy a Niva if they sold in the US. They could sell it as off road only vehicle to get around strict safety and emissions regulations.
@CaptHollister8 жыл бұрын
Trabants can only be driven because they are over 25 years old and are exempt from safety and emissions regulations. A new Niva would have to meet new car safety and emissions regs and, being a brand-new 40 year-old car, it would fail miserably. If you really want one, there are a handful of older ones that were imported to the US from Canada. Or you could import an old one from anywhere in the world, as long as it' was at least 25 years old.
