They used to be sold here in Canada along with the complete Lada lineup. They stopped being imported because, while cheap, they suffered from truly awful build quality. The Niva was the best of the lot, but that's not saying much... On the plus side, the Niva is a true go anywhere off-roader, but at the cost of being slow and tedious on the road. If you really want one, survivors occasionally crop up on Kijiji. Bring tools.

Well, an old project. Have you guys ever seen a FIAT 127 ? Take a look on the net and compare. This was a Fiat lada project. The engine isn't a derived GM, but indeed the old FIAT 1600 SOHC , mounted ont the fiat 1500, then 131, 132, and so on. Extremely reliable, a true workhorse. Even the door handle are from FIAT. But after seen them back in the late 70's around town, they disappeared. I was living un in the mountains, and doctors and farmers they all used NIVA's. Story goes, i'm looking into buying one now, i love the old look, they are sturdy and the engine will run forever with little maintenance. And all for only 11000 euros. Can't beat that!

Lada. When released the engineering design was several generations ahead of the Japanese, but the manufacturing was several decades behind. It is not right to call this a 4x4, it has All Wheel Drive (AWD). 4x4 is only a part time system. AWD is full time. These differences matter and are not a mere splitting of hairs.

@hurrdurr Not necessarily so. The Yugo was crappily built because it was assembled at the Zavasta arms factory at a cut rate price. It sold for $4000 when new. Even for the 1980s, that was ridiculously cheap. A lot of Cadillac dealers actually started to give out Yugos to anyone who would buy a new Cadillac as a result. The Lada Niva, however was designed to be an off-roader from an an actual car factory. It can embarrass a whole bunch of larger, more powerful, and more expensive off roaders quite handily. A bit like an Austin Seven in that respect.
