Thanks for putting this together, it's clear and concise. I'm confident doing most things on my car but have never pulled a transmission. I have 13k miles on my '15 and want to do the clutch before a tune but it's certainly an expensive job. After watching this I'm confident it's relatively straight forward. I just did this yesterday. All you need to do is remove the axle completely instead of popping the ball joints and needing an alignment. I do have a 2 post lift though.

Hockey pucks work well for the pinch welds. I cut a small groove in mine with a hack saw. Edit: you can also get the factory airbox in/out of the car without removing the airdam cover.

Nice video man! I have a question. My MK7 GTI doesn't have the LSD (its the S base model), so my question is will I still need to remove the downpipe in order to remove the axle on the passengers side? I have an aftermarket downpipe, and have already removed the heat shield when i removed the OEM downpipe. what would be my next step after removing the passenger axle, since I don't have the LSD?

Did you take the subframe out? I can't understand how you got to either that heat shield over the passenger side axle or the top bolts on the vaq lsd with only a small extension like that unless the subframe was removed. With the subframe in, even with the downpipe removed it seems like there's no way to get to that stuff besides very very long extensions through the wheel well.

Thanks! All of the engine mount bolts. Including the three on the dog bone underneath the car. Also the clutch pressure plate bolts.I think that is it.

I took my time and spread it over 2 days. I used to be able to do my Talon TSI AWD in 4 hours on jack stands.

Hey guys own The Leon CUPRA 2016 and everything I should be similar to the GTI vii. This clutch is RSR should be TT RS. I wonder if this pressure plate will sit on two serial mass flywheel? Thanks very much for the advice

I am not sure if the Cupra has the same flywheel as the GTI, we would need to look up the VW part numbers. I had not heard the term two serial before but I believe this is the same thing as what most people call a dual mass flywheel. Yes, this clutch works on the GTI dual mass flywheel, that is one reason I went with the RSR clutch. I believe the RSR clutch is the TT RS clutch like you stated.

Guys, just drop the subframe. It comes down in 30 minutes tops. With the subframe out you can lay in there and still have room for the transaxle. Makes sure to replace all 6 bolts, and aquire two new shims for the subframe bolts. Otherwise you will get popping when maneuvering aggressively.

its a little more complicated because of the bewel box. i just dropped the whole subframe to make more room.

Only have 47,000 miles on my car. Starting to slip 4-6th gear. Completely stock other than intake and exhaust. Probably from the assholes at work that manage the parking lot that move my car 2-3 times a day, 4 times a week. >:[ Thanks for this video!!!!!!

Hi, I am at the part where I need to remove the LSD. Finding an allen long enough is a pain. You say in the video "8 or 9 hex". I am curious how you figured out you had to remove that. Where is guidance? I am kinda in a pickle on this at the moment. Have been to 4 stores, finally found a really long allen. Not long enough. If you have any more details, that would be great. I would love to see the VW service manual on this, not sure it exists.

In response to myself - For a 2017 MK7 GTI with Performance Package you need 12" of small diameter extensions on a 6mm allen / hex. This guys voice over states "8 or 9mm" and that was incorrect. Hope that helps someone, that hung me up for quite a while not wanting to strip, not having any resources and not wanting to damage the threads with a 6 when it should have been 7 or larger.

I what I found to be the best to clean the Flywheel is denatured alcohol with a scotch bright pad.

You mentioned the colour on the flywheel, it was blue did you not consider changing the flywheel to a new one that wasn't burnt?

+Dan Teeman No, I did not think that the flywheel looked compromised. The clutch was holding strong all the way up until I sold it.

Did you have any problems after the install? Just installed mine and shifting into first is pretty hard sometimes when the car is warm

Well that shouldn't be happening. I would check the slave cylinder and make sure you have it completely bled and there is no air in the line. The other thing I would check is where the linkage attaches on the top of the transmission, it might be off a tooth or two.

+Scott M I was at about 9000 miles. I am sure it would have lasted longer but I let someone drive my car and they slipped the clutch really bad and then after that it would not hold in 4-6 gear with hard acceleration.

I took way to long, because I had to keep moving the cameras around and charging batteries. If you have never done it before, or a similar FWD before give yourself all day. If it takes less time, then that is great. Take your time. The more times you do it, the faster you will get at it. One of my previous AWD cars I could take the transmission out and put it back in within an hour on jack stands. This car has a little more crap in the way though.

I find it funny that HS had the nerve to brush or grind off the part number off the pressure plate. They just didn't want people to find out that all you have to do is buy a TTRS clutch kit from dealer for 450$ instead 1k from them.

No, I did not drain it. I spilled a little (from the vent hole) when I pulled it out from under the car but otherwise I didn't drain any on purpose. The fluid was still pretty new so unless you want to upgrade to a high-performance fluid there was no need to change it.

I went with the RSR (Audi) clutch because it uses the stock flywheel, would not chatter, and only had a little bit of extra pedal pressure. For the Stage 2 MK7 tune power levels I think it is just enough holding force. If I were going any further with the GTI, like to stage 3 power levels (or if I was going to track the car consistently), I would have went with a much stronger clutch and would have had to go with the single mass flywheel. I also had one other concern when I was buying that clutch and it was crank walk. There were quite a few 2015 6MT models that experienced crankwalk and at that time I was really concerned that adding any extra pressure on the mains then necessary. It turned out it was an assembly issue and I have not heard of any 2016's with the problem, but it is always a concern with the really high ft/lb clutches.

Yes it was soon, but only because the tune raised the torque from 270 ft/lbs to 396 ft/lbs and the stock clutch could not take it with any aggressive driving or downshifts.

but absolutely necessary if you tune the car. If you buy a car off the lot with less than 20 miles and tune it to say stage 2, you'll still need an upgraded clutch because the stock one won't last long at all with all of the extra torque.

+dominicancash I'm happy with manual, changing clutches is much easier in my 86. And I guess it comes down to personal preference, I'd choose a Manual any day. A mate of mine has a manual MK7, after his stage 2 tune, his clutch lasted 9,000km
