I agree. But most of the weight is coming from crash readying the thing, and using heavy materials to keep the cost down. And a price hike is the last thing the Nismo can handle

hightechlowlife The BRZ/FRS is able to keep at 2758 lbs, have 4 seats, and still musters a 5-star safety rating. The Z line was never meant to be a lightweight sports car. It was meant to be a muscle car marketed towards the American crowd. That's why it weighs so much. That's why there are so many similarities with american muscle cars. People say Nissan lost their way with the Z line...they didn't.

if you could get a base corvette stingray you would be a complete idiot to choose this. the stingray has better interior, looks better, sounds better, handles better, and let us not forget the stingray is a true sportscar while the Z is more like a grand touring car "spiced up" to be a sports car.

Honestly, if the the 370Z had 370 Chp. That would be perfect. The Z, just like the concept of the BRZ and soon to be gone FRS. Its a drivers car, which done correctly does not need 800HP. Although, for the price of the 370Z, the suspension and brake capabilities. I think this car deserves at least 370 crank horsepower. I think the current braking and chassis would feel at home with 370 Hp, and would just make this car performs flawlessly .

Analog is a great way to describe the driving experience, and as a driving enthusiast, I love that. As for power, I think it is well matched to the chassis. I would just like some more character, like Honda VTEC or Toyota VVT that gives you a surge at higher RPM. I have owned several sports cars over the last 6 years, but keep test driving a 370z Nismo, because it just fun and engaging. I have been tempted to buy one, but I never pull the trigger, because they are too expensive for what they are and it isn't necessarily special at any one thing. If they depreciate enough, I may get one. Maybe after the 400z comes out, they will drop.

Yup! I just drove a 2016 Nismo Z Tech Pack today and I was amazed by it! I really liked it! But..... it needed a turbocharged motor. Nissan has got to bring that back to the Z. That is literally my only issue with it. I absolutely love everything else about the car! Yes...even the clutch (which took almost 10 minutes to get used to lol) Give it a Twin Turbo set up with 450-500hp and you will have folks lining up to buy this car!

I think this car is stuck in 2003, Nissan wake up and add some real power to this car, at least show some love like you do to the GTR. The 370z started with 332hp, it should be closer to 400 if we follow what they've done to the GTR. In Nissans defense, its harder to squeeze out power from an already squeezed engine. (this engine is nothing more than a bored out 3.5 HR engine from 2007) I really hope that the new 3.0TT they are planning to use in the new q60 will trickle down to the new Z. This is the spark that the Z was missing all along, make it a sub 40k car with around 400hp under 3300lbs and you have a winner.

Hey Moto Man I completely agree. I am a 48 year old fella that just bought an Infiniti G37x because it is a practical family sedan with Gobs of power. Yes I love my car and I bought it largely because of the power. But when I look at this new Nismo I don't see any big deal because it only has 20 hp more than my family sedan and I can put 3 more people in my car if I so desire. So yes I do agree with you.........GIVE IT MORE POWER......... CONVINCE ME !!!!!!!!

Coming from a past owner of 2 new 350z, The z needs to be cheaper. It either needs 400hp for that price tag with 400ft lb torque or keep that engine and drop the price. They priced it as an entry level Porsche and that is not appealing to those buyers. This should be in the 28-30k price range with the sports package (not talking nismo). Right now it's an overpriced, plastic interior dinosaur. Kind of a shame how high they raised the price on this.
@skywalk3x
@skywalk3x 9 жыл бұрын
What Porsche are you talking about? No Porsche starts under $50K and if you've ever priced a Porsche with options even the Boxster is well over $100K and thats a bare bones Porsche. And all these people talking about the interior has got to stop, Plastic Dinosaur come on dude Go to a dealership and sit in a Z it looks way better than you are saying. Not quality wise but in the looks department it kills the boring Porsches. All the Z needs is a diet, it weighs in a 3278lbs if they can cut 200lbs of the Z with the same HP it would be low $'s 0-60 and high 12's in the Qrt. It has been quoted for months a key in the new Z is a weight reduction, Turbo 4cylinder is even being considered along a turbo in the V6 which would certainly put it at 400hp

Great review! I absolutely and most certainly think it needs more power! Even something along the lines of 400+ should be easily attainable and bring it more in line with what a car like this should be. That moto man brings up a Corvette and my immediate thought is not a chance for the Z. The vette offers more in every possible way. Which is the point. I should feel that way about the Z. Times have moved forward. Yet Nissan is investing more focus on selling image instead of product value. Yes it's a Z but ford makes a focus that has nearly the same amount of torque. A clear sign of how the performance buyer is spending there money. They simply cannot provide an enticing argument with the Z in its current state. People are paying attention to how much "bang for there buck" they are getting. Horse power being a major part. Nissan needs to step there game up. But I digress.

First time I have seen a video of yours. Great job; the passion about the Z cars, great insight with spot on analysis. I am a diehard Nissan fan and the 370Z has been long in the tooth for a while. I thought Nissan would have bumped up the power in the 2013+ models (first 370z refresh) just like they did at the end of the 350Zs life cycle (2007-2008 model years) but no such luck. I think it would of added some much need enthusiasm and press coverage back into this sports car that has been overshadowed the last few years. Furthermore, this should be (fingers crossed) the last year of the 370Z before a new Z is introduced at the end of this year. I am very interested to see what direction Nissan goes in

I'm CRAZY for my currant 240Z & have had most generations of the Z in the past. IMO Nissan lost their way with the Z car once again. The simple formula of producing an AFFORDABLE sports car is what put the Z on the map. Only now it's in the league of being a dream car for most. Come on Nissan! Pull the lesson from yourself in the 240Z & Mazda with the 1st gen Miata. Build us an AFFORDABLE bare bone sports car & it will have a standing waiting list at the dealerships.

agreed, if they were going to play in the big boy arena, then go BIG, 425-450hp with a SC creating a conservative boost, all OEM. we have a tuner in our area doing the following, cost, not sure, but it's not extravagant either. 2009 370z -671rwhp @ 12psi - E85, 100% Stock Engine - 61,000 miles YES, that's 671rwhp!

Except Hyundai has done that with the Genesis having 348hp and being around $25k and it's only a decent seller. Are you talking about being even more economical and lets say $20k? The HP wouldn't be enough at that point - ala the S2000 which itself is only a decent seller because of only having 238 hp. Supposedly, there are two models of Z coming out. One with a Mercedes 4 cylinder that will be the cheaper version and still be quick and one with a turbo V6...maybe the 4 cylinder will be more to what you're talking about.

John Vu Well I agree with your comment as after my 2006 350z I bought a 2013 Genesis coupe v6 rspec. I love it and think that is how the z should be priced if it keeps this engine status quo. I thank Hyundai as they allowed me to have a rear wheel drive car with some hp and stay under 30k.

I think the z's are a good balance of power . They are driving cars and do just that very well. Some issues that I have found with cars like the viper is that when you are driving there is too much power. You can't pull away from a red light without looking crazy and that car really is crazy, suicidal too. The z has power and can move much faster than other cars, but without going crazy. I think the only thing that could be added to a z would be an oem single turbo. But at its current state, another great thing about z's is the fact that it's a sports car that will take you to 200k miles. So by adding a turbo you ruin that reliability I suppose.

First thing I would do, send it off to a guy in my area that has done the following to his 370, if I were so lucky he would even take the job. 2009 370z -671rwhp @ 12psi - E85, 100% Stock Engine - 61,000 miles YES, that's 671rwhp!. I like the new Vette, it's a superior car from the factory, but I'm already seeing too many of them, lol! To see one of these 2015 Nismo's, good luck!

I like that it doesn't have huge power. They're not in a competition with this car. They're making a great sports car without getting hung up on numbers and what everyone else is doing. Similar in a way to the mx5. Nissan cars generally have a character that the owners love regardless of numbers.

And a Frickin CVT Altima at that! I agree, it looks much better than the older Nismos, not a fan of the red stripes though, makes it look ricey. I'd say 380hp sounds about right. For that kind of money though (I read estimated 45k), my flawed logic kicks in & says a 2015 Dodge Challenger 392 (40k for Scat Pack, 46k for SRT) ... Klaus did one helluva job with the new interior! i know i know, it doesn't handle half as well as the Lotus, probably weighs twice as much too ... i blame Chris Bangle, his 7-series poisoned me with all kinds of ideas lol. I agree regarding the Skyline ... hell even De Nysschen agrees, but that's a story for another day ... As always, excellent video M.

Problem with Nissan performance vehicles is that, if they gave the 370z more power, and got it to be something alongside the Lotus / Audi R8, then why would you buy the GT-R over the 370z? They keep them substantially apart because (australian prices here) comparing a $60k AUD car to a $170AUD car, you'd obviously expect much more power from something that cost 3x as much. If they opt the 370 to make more power, enough to bring it's 0-100km/h times to sub 4 seconds and 1/4mile to

I own a 2011 Nismo with bolt on mods (exhaust, intake). Sure I could use a little more HP in straight line situations, but honestly for tight canyon driving, 100+ more HP wouldn't be as much fun. Heck, even naturally aspirated the car is at the ragged edge of hooking up consistently through 120deg turns. Yea, I could keep traction control on, but that takes away from the fun factor. More isn't always better.

Great review, good info. I'm a Z guy, I'm on my 4th, currently an 88 N/A manual; fun cars. I totally agree with you on the current Z NISMO. I just don't understand why this car didn't come stock with at least 400-450 hp. Nissan could have easily pulled 50-75 more horses outta the VQ37 for the same price. Would really make Z lovers proud when pully along side a Vette, instead of hoping the guy doesn't goose his engine. And I believe Z lovers would have been satisfied with 400-450 hp. And who wants to blow your warranty when spending that kind of money on modding. Oh well, we can dream. Maybe your buddy Randy or the next Z designer will read this post and give us want we want on the next go round....

I love Z's and I'll be getting one or an FRS really soon. The issue with the Z is that for enthusiasts, buying the base model with sport package is the better deal. You save 15k easily and you will be able to build a better car with aftermarket parts. It's a great car but for the cost it doesn't have enough power. It could be an issue with the VQ37 being somewhat old now and perhaps they can get no more power from it. 400hp even if it was a Nismo parts department addon should have been available.
@Cypherus21
@Cypherus21 9 жыл бұрын
I was in the same boat as you and decided on waiting for the FRS refresh in 2016, which will allegedly have a 295 hp turbo from a 2.0 litre boxer engine. Apparently the order came from Toyota executives up top to give the car more power. So you would have a the light weight balance of an FRS plus enough hp for daily fun use. The 370Z is an older car now and hasn't changed much since 2009. It drives like a tank and from what others told me, is not comfortable as your daily driver as you feel every bump in the road. Plus the high level torque and RPM to squeeze out that extra hp, will never be engaged in the city or highway unless you race the engine. Not really practical.
@niceprince
@niceprince 9 жыл бұрын
I won't be buying new either way but if it's true that its getting a turbo engine It'll be interesting to see what happens to the price (and if this makes Nissan bring out the s16) Maybe I should wait too because I am a Nissan fanboy first and foremost. About it driving like a tank I'd have to disagree with. It's definitely not a light car and the steering is kind of heavy but it depends on what you compare it too. Compared to a Mustang or Camaro it's light as a feather lol... The 86 though I'm almost positive I wouldnt be happy with 200hp as I live in the southern part of the U.S atm where the roads are straight and horsepower is king.. 95% of my driving will be on straight, open highways. I'd rather not be outrun by minivans.. a turbo is mandatory for an 86 for me.

just go base model z, upgrade brakes, LSD, tires, and some suspension, then go tt or SC... I don't see how that can be so bad. when you start to compare forced induction to NA, things get very skewed, very fast. Remember, its putting the power to the wheels. I'm happy to be a part of a Z family, in a world where i've been seeing about 1-2 Z's to 5-6 toyobaru's. Overall, the Z is just a beastly car that can still do wonders and handle ridiculously...Nissan is doing it right..next men's may go direct injection.. and lower it to a 3.0 turbo again... I'd say it'd be at the newer m3/m4 range an a new force to be reckoned with...then with a tune similar to the JB4... good god... WHY NOT NISSAN?

Unfortunately you're right that in this day and age all people want is power, and currently this engine platform can sustain over 600whp on stock transmission and stock engine internals. Not many other cars for 30k can do that. Truth be told 350 is a lot of power in this size of car. I have a base sport and I can tell you that on the track/autocross it is a blast! It has almost too much power in certain scenarios... However, if you're really that amazing of a driver they do have supercharger, single turbo, and twin turbo kits for this car... 8 to 10k more in cost gets you z06 and up performance numbers

Not a bad review. I agree with you on the fact that the Z Nismo is so under powered in this day and age. Most of it's competitors out there come out with 400 bhp or more. Some less expensive models have power that rival, exceed or is just a little under what the top of the line Z can produce. Like the Subaru (Impreza) WRX STi, the body panels/lines, suspension, chassis and other visually appealing aspects of the Z Nismo are not the issue; because those parts actually get revised and modernized, for the most part. The motor and transmission remain unchanged and are basically outdated at this point.

More than peak power, they should fix three things. A) Add low end power (hate having to wait till I get to 4500rpms to feel anything). Stock supercharger maybe? My VW GTI could beat my Z in any gear if rpms were limited to 4k, easily. 2) Lighten car dramatically, 2700lb target. D) Fix the clutch it's horrible. Shoot for S2000 feel. 4) Delete the base model and touring -- focus on having a great sports car (This isn't a mustang).

Hello, Congratulations on your work! I am a NISSAN / Nismo enthusiast and a previous owner of a Japanese-spec Nissan Silvia S15 with the turbo SR20DET engine. Since Nissan and Renault joined, the sports models of the gold 1990s lost their character. NISSAN should consider bringing back the real character of the 300ZX with a V6 Twin Turbo (derivation of the VR30DETT the same bad,wide/low supercar-like design, RWD, new electronics and transmissions, LEDs, GT-R technology and continue the legacy of the 300ZX in a more GT orientation rather than a sports car. Same applies for a new Silvia S16 with 4-cylinder engines, RWD, GT-R design elements. Nismo versions and parts should follow. Global models will lower the cost of such projects that were previously strictly Japanese domestic. The success of the GT-R is the best indication for the success of such projects. Mike

I drove one of these while looking for a sports car... and there just seems to be a lot of little things holding this car back. 1. While I like the new styling a LOT better, it still is a bit "boy racer". Just clean up a few more lines and I think it goes from boy racer to sexy. 2. Interior has some really odd choices of design and materials. Once again, "boy racer", not sexy. 3. Power... not that 350 hp isn't enough for most people, but the engine doesn't feel refined which make the engine feel unwilling to deliver it's power. 4. Road noise... lots and lots and lots of road noise. It's so load I actually questioned if I'd want to drive it all the time. Keys to greatness: Oh so slightly clean up the exterior and interior, less gimmicky more classy. Provide better noise dampening in the wheel wells and most likely a different tire. Update the engine internals to be more rev happy, or ask Ford to source the V8 engine from of the outgoing Boss 302(not going to happen, but sounds like a winning idea).

It doesn't need more power, More power can ruin the car. Someone else said weight reduction here in the comments, I agree, weight reduction is better than adding power. Cause miatas only have 130hp and they still work great.

350hp from a N/A 3.7L V6 with reasonable MPG. What more can you possibly expect?

I would love to see a 400hp maybe 425hp Nismo (without forced induction). Also for it to shed a few pounds, it is pretty heavy for the type of car it is. Then this thing will be even more amazing
