I tow 3.0t with my Toyota Landcruiser V8 diesel and monitor temps with an Ultraguage (recommended for 200 series). Standard factory transmission cooler. Transmission temps on long uphills are around 67 - 70C. Water temp may get to 95C - still in acceptable range. EGT can get to 680C. I have a torque converter lock up module fitted which I highly recommend to keep temperatures down. Heat is the killer of auto transmissions. Cooler the oil, the longer the transmission will last. Great videos Greg.

yea Your on to it the cooler the better when Towing... thanks for watching Cheers Greg

You can use a transmission fluid bypass thermostat to lock in the temperature both in the cold and hot. I use one made by derale in the U.S and it works great. It bypasses the cooler in the winter until the fluid reaches operating temp.

Great idea would definitely help in the winter thanks for the info

Really enjoying your videos. We love your sense of humour, Greg. We are hitting the road so with a 3.5t caravan and 2018 Ford Ranger XLT and are finding your videos invaluable and will be looking into these upgrades before we are full time (probably before). Any recommendation on tow mirrors?

Hi Maureen, thanks for the feedback. I don't have towing mirrors as our van has a good camera so not much help on that one Sorry, thanks for watching Cheers Greg and Sandy

@@KiwiWanderers Hi Greg, this is Paul, Maureen's husband from the above post. I've purchased the OBDLink and FORScan software and loving the new information. Thanks for the tips and product reviews. I am about to purchase the trans cooler from Alltrans. I'm generally pretty handy, but wondering if you need any specialty tools to fit this myself? When is your install video being released (no pressure..lol). A second question, when you replaced your transmission fluid did you replace the gasket on the pan and how did you get the oil up into the filler, it looks quite awkward when I had a quick look under the Ranger. Cheers, your technical video's are great. Paul
@KiwiWanderers Жыл бұрын
@@keenefamily2303 Hi Paul yea I know the install video is well due !! It is a relatively easy job but I did have the. use of a hoist, removing the old cooler and fitting up the new pipes is a bit tight and mine was attached with t20 toques bits that were int he most awkward place.. Yes I always replace the gasket you can buy a kit with gasket and filter in it. filling the trans is a mission as access is very tight and you need to check level when trans is at operation temp so the exhaust is hot ... not a good design but I used a trans pump like www.repco.co.nz/tools-equipment/garage-tools-equipment/greasing-lubrication-fluid-transfer/repco-fluid-transfer-pump-1l-rup1l/p/A1307491..thanks for watching Cheers Greg

Hi Greg, thanks for the additional information and the link to the fluid transfer pump. I find it helpful when you include links to the products you have used, it makes our task a lot easier, much appreciated. I mentioned your Kiwi Wanderer name into my enquiry with Alltrans. Cheers, Paul

If you are pulling 3.5t then I think you are well over your weights. Just because the vehicle is rated to that amount, doesn't mean it's legal. I'd check that if I were you. Insurance companies are always looking for this type of thing when push comes to shove.

Hi and thanks for sharing. I have a wildtrak X, bi turbo 2021 we tow a 2800kg van loaded and recently on a 24degree day we towed up the A13 to Victor harbor and also last week through the Adelaide hills to Melbourne. Both runs remained at 93kmph and the standard trans temp hit a maximum of 166F or 75C and the car reached 98C the engine temp cycled down to 85C continually. do you have the 6 speed? I have seen a few trans temp videos and the 6 speed is always a bit hotter than the 10 speed so would you think I need a cooler on my next wildtrak V6 early next year?
@KiwiWanderers Жыл бұрын
Yeah We have a 6speed and our van is about the same weight. not sure you need a cooler on the next gen. the 10speeds are a better trans and it migh much up warranty if ya buying new. the good thing about the next gen is the trans temp gauge is on the dash. thanks for the comment Cheers Greg

Did u remove the factory transmission thermostat ?? [bypass kit available ] [trans valve body needs removal ] . This combined with a large/single or a dual cooler works extremely well in hilly very hot ambient temperatures.
@KiwiWanderers Жыл бұрын
No I haven't removed the thermostat, but thats the next step if we still get to hot,, Appreciate the comments, thanks for watching. Cheers Greg

Hi Greg, got a cooler fitted to my 2019 BT50 a few months ago, now towing my 6.8m southern star (approx 2,800 kgs) over the Kaimai ranges transmission temp only gets into the high 80s so I consider it well worth the investment.

I have a question ; I am considering getting a trans cooler bec in south Texas the summer can get brutal in the triplet digits . But my car is Honda civic coupe and nothing has been done to it (beside an cold air intake ). I was wondering if I can get an opinion if I need one for the hot temp. Or if my car is safe enough to handle it via it’s build design? Any thing helps

Did wonder about transmission temp on Vitara. Relying on it telling me when too hot, which is probably to late. So far no problems with 1000kg van over Takaka hill which is about as bad as gets in NZ. Wish Suzuki used dash screen to display something useful like transmission and engine temp. Instead they have gimicky stuff eg torque and power graph, like you going be looking at these while driving hard. Plan is get transmission fluid change brought forward by few services now that we towing a caravan.

Remember to all this video was a single cooler [ many optional kits are dual cooler ] tested at 25 deg cel . If u add higher ambient 32--40 cel the operating temp will go up most definitely if towing a large van . This all the proof you need that Ford designed these for snow conditions AND NOT Australian conditions as Ford claim . LOL . ALL THE OIL COMPANIES tell you any thing over 100deg cel WILL DEGRADE your oil .
