The MDX is sportier than a lot out there. My 02 had 285 horses and if I needed it she would get up and go. These really are the greatest family cars out there. It’s hard to put two kids and all that comes with them in a high performance camaro. I’ve tried!

This an invisible car. I had one for a week, it had a decent interior, drove well and it was pretty good for an SUV. However, I kept losing it. After a concert 5 of us went back to the marker where we parked the car and it wasn't there. All five of us thought we were going to have to call the cops before realizing we were standing next to the car all along. Chalking it up to not being familiar with the car, we drove home and stopped off at In and Out. Walking out of In and Out, we had another moment where we couldn't see the car and realized we were looking right through it. On the drive home we noticed that while there were a fair number of these on the road, none of us had ever noticed them. If you told me that drivers of these never got tickets, I would believe it. Cops would see a number on the radar, look up and see nothing. It's a decent looking car , but somehow Acura made it invisible or completely unmemorable.

When shopping for SUVs/Crossovers my wife and I thought basically the same thing of the MDX. We were coming from a CR-V and the MDX just felt purely... Honda. It was OK to drive, but it really didn't drive any different than the CR-V. It looks OK, but it's also just kinda... there. It has a style, kinda. Feels like Honda is just banking on the Acura name, and it works for them, but overall all it's pretty bleh.

The Acura MDX generation before this (2007-2013) was a way sportier car. It was also luxurious and extremely good looking. Even the new Honda Pilot puts these to Shame. Acura needs to get the blood back into their SUV's

I have owned a 2002 MDX and a 2003 RX 300. I loved the MDX and never had any issues with it. My wife had the RX 300 and it’s been a mess. I’ve had to fix everything on it. Everything from the timing belt and water pump to a blown head gasket that led to overheating and countless problems from that. I put significantly more miles on the MDX and didn’t do anything other than standard maintenance and a couple minor repairs. My wife’s car has been a money pit that has had to rebuild the rack and pinion steering and rebuild a blown motor. I absolutely love the MDX and will be buying s new one as next month. I have no intentions of even bothering with any other SUV. Sure it may not be a fancy sports coup but I’m a crippled veteran with serious spinal injuries and small kids. I need safe, comfortable and reliable. The MDX checks all those boxes better than any other I’ve ever seen. Some of us may love fancy high performance cars but it’s not high enough on my priority list to spend that kind of money. Especially with my medical issues. Absolutely love the MDX though. Worth every penny!

I'm on my second lease with an MDX and my current is the new one. I'm about 30,000kms into it including a trip from Toronto to Tampa Bay and back. Feelings so far are that the previous generation was better. I haven't found this car to ride as comfortable. Part of that being the 9-speed box. At low speeds and in traffic it throws you back and forth changing gears. On the highway though, it's great. Made the journey down to Florida nicely. The cruise control with lane-assist is great and the new nav screen is nice, albeit a pain to actually use. Agreed on the buttons to switch gears, I don't like having to look where I'm pressing in the same way that I prefer stereo and climate control buttons over touch screens. I was considering switching to an X5 but with all the seats down the MDX offers more cargo space...and the dealer offered a better deal than the BMW dealer.

Owning the 2015 version, I nearly agree with everything you stated. Well, technically, I have the FWD Tech (mid trim level). As a semi-luxury family hauler, it works really well. And when my wife and I were shopping around, we did look at the Lexus RX and the Infiniti Pathfinder (whatever alphanumeric designation they want to call it) and the MDX slots in nicely in the middle. Dynamically, it is no sports car, and the mass appeal for this type of vehicle doesn't market it as such. But I will say this: it's good enough for dad while he's hailing the kids around. Bells and whistles, and interior materials could be executed better, but what they did use us smart, logical, and very Honda. I too hate the stupid fucking dual screen bullshit, but I think still better than the even more stupid Lexus mouse/trackpad bullshit.

I appreciate you doing these "normal car" one-takes along side the enthusiast/sports/exotic cars. We were recently in the market for something to replace our total'd, ultra useful and practical, '07 Odyssey, so we drove the MDX as an upscale alternative. I thought it was nice, and certainly an upgrade from the Odyssey, and everything you've pointed out here is dead-on. But I fear both you and I have lost some perspective in terms of evaluating these sorts of things. For example, with 0-60 in under 6 seconds, and running the quarter in mid-14s (credit to the 9 speed auto), it's as quick as my Focus ST or a new GTI (neither of which admittedly are all that fast or quick really), but both of which are consider "hot" hatches. I'd also point out that the damn 4300 lbs. behemoth will pull a (relatively) decent g on a skidpad, which would only improve with some decent stickier tires. And all of its performance numbers are better than many of the icons of the enthusiast scene, like a vintage 911, e30 M3, or Fox body Mustang. Anyway, one of the most valuable things about having something like a new MDX in the mix of one-takes is that, despite all our affection and romance for cars like vintage 911s or E30 M3s, or Fox body Mustangs, it really really helps to remind us that the real essence and value of driving a car, any car, is in the experience it provides, not the numbers it posts up. Thanks.

Matt - not sure about the current car, but the second generation MDX in manual mode would let you bounce off the rev limiter without shifting for you. Of course, when you went to shift, the lever was the wrong way, but that was still neat. Especially when the engine actually does sound pretty good up top.
@Red_Bearded_Dad8 жыл бұрын
I'm not trying to be biased since we just bought a 2016 Honda Pilot, but I'm not sold on why you would choose the MDX over the pilot other than badge status. They use the same platform and basically the same AWD system (if so equipped). You can basically get all of the options of a fully loaded MDX in a fully loaded Pilot for about $10K less (or about the price of an entry level MDX). I'm sure the suspension tuning is a little different and maybe the MDX is a bit quieter, but is that difference $10K? And if you just want leather, heated seats, and normal accessories, the Pilot can be had for mid- to high- $30k's.

I have a 2012, I think it handles pretty well for a family hauler of it's size. It's definitely not a sports car, but the SH-AWD is surprisingly nimble for such a large vehicle. I had a 2015 as a loaner while mine was being serviced, and I thought it felt more sluggish and sloppy in general. Interior was nicer, though.

Nice review, Matt. Even though it may not be the enthusiast's choice, I appreciate the commentary about where it falls relative to its contemporaries in the market. Maybe a little more about how it was during an evening out, or running errands and whatnot? Even though you looked uncomfortable as hell talking about it, a lot of us value your opinion in the areas we'd be considering a vehicle like this in the first place (safety, fuel economy, storage, entertainment, option prices, etc.)

The Chevrolet Traverse, which is a dreadful, cheap feeling crossover can get into the mid-40k range price wise. 58 grand for this isn't too bad, considering that you're getting good build quality and solid reliability in a nice looking package. I also really like Honda V6's, although the J series is a little antiquated. However, it's they're solid motors with decent power and MPG. Plus, they sound pretty nice for an average V6.

I have a 2012 MDX 6 speed with paddle shifter. it is a nice car and looks great. I have many points to bring up here 1. it looks tons better than any year pilot, that's why you pay more. 2. it is Honda reliability and does not cost as much as Germans do in repairs, from what I've read.(maybe someone can enlighten me) 3. it's pretty fast for a heavy ass car and handles great for everyday driving. the SH AWD system does come In effect if you take turns hard enough, you can really feel how effortless it will allow you to power through the corners. Also wheel spin doesn't happen, it just goes. 4. interior it's decent, not on par with any German luxury but that's known for Acuras. I know people say they would take"this or that" car instead but that's the beauty of consumerism, we get a choice. I like the look and drive of the MDX compared to Fords Honda or even the Audi Q5 Mercedes in the 58 k price point. All the poor Subaru WRX fanboys talking shit, lol just wait till you're older

SDD525 Maybe to you, it's a good thing I don't have you making choices for me ;) But to further drive the point that we ALL do indeed have choices, cars in particular we have many great choices. First almost any car will get you from A to B, with adequate safety and speed. So cars need not be BMW Porsche for the ultimate driving experience. Second, we can choose from many different styles that suit our tastes (some of us don't like space age) . I could go on but I think you can fill in the rest. So now that you declared Lexus better than the MDX, would you mind providing the detailed technical comparisons? Also please provide any real world driving comparison for added thoroughness. After you have done that please do not share because NO ONE CARES what you think. thanks
@radiospank8 жыл бұрын
SDD525 To touch on the paying for luxuary reliability and performance badge. We are very brand oriented, this is why KIA despite having great looks still has the stigma of being cheap. This is why Porsche still is considered a luxury car even tho it's value drops significantly within a few years, same with BMW and Audi. For me I consider it all and maybe for my next car I will consider a German and pony up for the added costs.

No need to apologize, normal cars are welcome as well, in my opinion. Alot of fun can be had hooning around in normal vehicles, suvs/minivans, etc. The lack of performance refinement, makes them a handful to drive enthusiastically, but that's a huge part of the fun. A dialed in sports car is great, but the imperfections in a vehicle is what is fun to overcome as a driver.

I totally agree with everything you said about the car in terms of style, driving characteristics, and build quality. But a BMW X5 or Audi Q7 both start at 54k. There is no way in hell you can get one with, well, any options for the same price as this. For the category it's in, the MDX really isn't as expensive as it seems. I bet the cost to own is much less too when factoring in things like tire changes, tune ups, and running gear

@TheStallion2348 жыл бұрын
And I believe it, but that was 2013. I just priced one out and the most base level Q7 with just the navigation package already hits $58k. Point I'm trying to make is that although $58k is a lot of coin no matter which way you cut it, compared to the other luxury cars in it's segment, the MDX isn't as pricey as it seems. Especially considering the options included in that number

You can't compare the MDX to the X5 because the X5 doesn't have a 3rd row. The MDX fairly loaded for roughly $49k is one of the best 3rd row vehicles out there. It slaughters the Ford Explorer. The Jeep Grand Cherokee again is MUCH smaller and quite frankly ends up on the shit list for reliability every year. If you can't afford the MDX......go buy a Honda Pilot. Another big 3rd row bargain.
@N54B30BMW8 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Arnold The 3rd row is an optional extra on the X5. You could have at least checked out the BMW website. It's right there. (www.bmwusa.com/bmw/xmodels/x5 ) Also why can't you compare a 2row vehicle with a 3row? Not everyone needs 3 rows but still likes medium sized SUV's. I really see no reason at all why I should prefer this thing over an X5...
@modenajon8 жыл бұрын
+Jimmy the Saint I've actually never seen a 3rd row in a X5. Must be cozy. It's just my opinion that I feel 2 row and 3 row shouldn't be compared strictly on cargo space. There is plenty to compare in there own classes. I love X5's but the room...even the width in a MDX plus the comfort and plenty of power seems like a better bargain. Then again, just going off my experience. I haven't compared data specs.

This $58K car was pretty (fully) loaded. A friend recently bought a pov-spec FWD '16 MDX for under $42K. For that money, it is about on par with a loaded up FWD Pilot Touring, losing out on the nav, but gaining in all-important kerb cred. And people crib about Porsche's option pricing; this MDX basically tacked on ~40% over its base model. Most cars are like that; a loaded Civic at $27K? That's in Accord territory. See a trend? Option-packages are where auto mfrs make their margins -- or recover costs; the Civic is a pretty amazing car for the money (no, Honda didn't pay me -- my payments are to Ford).

it's funny what you said about the MDX interior vs the civic. not quit the same, but when my dad was looking at getting a new car. he started looking at the Acura TLX but I made him look at the civic si (2014) and I remember sitting in the si and saying that the interior of the TLX was super nice, but not worth the extra 28 thousand. He did end up buying the si.

Have you tried the new Pilot ? It looks great and would fit the bill here judging by your comparisons.

Hope you seen this Matt.. I love your channel and enjoy every video. I run a similar channel myself on a micro scale. I love cars and always will. With my small channel I know how crude social media and KZbin can be. I always see you making comments to support your reasoning for doing something a particular way.. Its no ones business if you get paid to drive cars and whatnot. The trolls are just that and the majority of us understand. We watch your videos because we like you and enjoy the content. Thank You for doing these.. I look forward to them and could care less about the money or arraingments of how you made it possible.. Just remember, we watch because of you.. All kinds of other car channels on KZbin. I wouldnt worry about telling people shit... Your fans will be here regardless and the haters will be around too..

Appreciate that, but I need you and everyone else to understand that accepting payments from manufacturers and then presenting a video as a review is highly unethical and very wrong. People may not agree with my opinions, but at the very least, I'm honest. Taking money is not honest, and anyone who does is making a commercial not a review.

+TheSmokingTire I agree 100% and that says a lot of your character. Thanks for the response. Check out my Channel if you have the opportunity.. I'm from West Virginia! Stay safe :)

Do you guys have any plans to test out a 2016-2017 Ford Edge Sport at some point when the times for the normal vehicles. I'd love to see your take on it, seems to be a good choice for that segment. Plus side it has a good amount of power for that size, with the ability to crank it up a bit outside the showroom ;) Thanks!

So, a crossover or a wagon? I lean more towards a wagon because it could be a lot more fun and I don't really need the AWD.

Matt, did you notice if the driver's seat belt is abnormally short compared to other cars? We just (last night) bought a 2016 Pilot EX-L, and my wife and I both noticed that for some reason the driver's belt is much much shorter than the front passenger belt. Like to the point that if you are tall or a larger person, you can barely lean forward enough to see over your left shoulder when pulling into an angled intersection (i.e. yield at a 4 way; on ramps; etc.). If you drop something on the floor you can forget picking it up without removing the belt.
@TheSmokingTire8 жыл бұрын
Really? That's strange. I had both this and the pilot and did not notice that
@Red_Bearded_Dad8 жыл бұрын
Our trade-in was a 2013 Pilot which didn't have that issue. Different a strange issue.
@Red_Bearded_Dad8 жыл бұрын
Ok, the seatbelt is a bit shorter, BUT we figured out that the seat adjustment was in the highest positon. Lowering it to the "normal" height helped TREMENDOUSLY! And thanks for answering back, Matt!

If he's going to do any more current SUV/cross overs....TRUST ME, he should look at the Ford Edge Sport AWD with the v6 twin turbo EcoBoost. - the thing does 0-60 in FIVE SECONDS. Quarter mile 14.2 @98. - take a look!!! " Poor mans X5 "

The MDX at $58,000 is a steal, and this comparison to the Civic is ridiculous.
@dcharizard918 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I have to agree with Matt. The level of refinement and luxury isn't there for the price of the MDX. This model year still uses plastic wood trim! It also doesn't make sense that you can get a nicer interior (better layout) and better tech in the non-luxury division, Honda (maybe not the Civic, but look at the Pilot).

Hey Matt, since we are on Acura subject, when do you predict to get your hands on the new NSX? And is there any old NSX as well, in your sights?
@TheSmokingTire8 жыл бұрын
I just filmed an old NSX. New NSX isn't going well. They aren't doing any traditional press Loans, only these "experience events" which focus on technology and not performance.

Just listen to all those thunks from the rear suspension over the minor imperfections in the road. That's the #1 reason why I sold my MDX after only a year of ownership. Well, that and 42 days in the shop fixing other QC-related rattle and noise issues. It's just insane that an "entry level luxury" vehicle has such unrefined and loud suspension and such poor quality control. My 5 year old Mazda Tribute is quieter over the same roads and has fewer squeaks and rattles.
