( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum edition isn't the type of truck that first comes to mind when you need to get beyond paved roads and yet this AWD vehicle is surprising capable when the trail gets muddy and wet.

I have the same setup in the Explorer Sport with the same tires and I took it back roading on High Mountain Road near Lake Lopez here in CA. The thing that was most impressive is the ride being so smooth over rocks and lack of slipping. I went up some really steep areas with rock beds and it just crawled right up them without slipping. I scraped the bottom a few times but nothing bad and a big rock caught the front lower plastic guard but it didn't even put a scratch in it. It sounded like it busted off but no scratch and no breaks. Whew! The unfortunate thing is I got almost to the end of the road and came up on some deep ruts in the road (2-3 foot holes) that required more clearance than I was willing to risk. This thing has plenty of power and great terrain management for sand and rocks. I think with a good lift kit like the Traxda lift kit , skid plates, and better tires like some Goodrich KOs this thing would be really good for off roading. With the tires deflated it can crawl up steep sand dunes without slipping and just glides across the top. Can't beat the features this vehicle has. Not even the Raptor has massage seats. A decked out and loaded Explorer Sport or Platinum for off road use for around 60k new. Crank up the HP to 450 HP using a 10 min tuning kit. What's not to like?

Are the new ones still body on frame? Or did they go to a unibody design? I just picked up a 2008 Eddie Bauer Explorer with the 4.6L V8 and 4WD not the typical AWD that some of them had. It still has auto mode but has high and low as well. Hopefully we get snow this year so I can see how well it does. I like the older body styles better too.
@notasolution

@@wildbill23c yours is still an actual body on frame truck. They went to a car based unibody in 2011 and up. 2010 and under are body on frame proper trucks

And honestly besides those extra "satin finishes" i think the limited trim model is the best looking of the whole bunch. Especially the grille and exhaust ports on the limited.

This is a very nice SUV. We had a 02 limited. Impressive 3.5 engine in terms of performances, but you'll need do manual valve cleaning even with a catch can. You can not use intake cleaners because of turbos per ford. Less headaches with a Toyota.

I've driven SUVs for a long time and will say if you plan on doing regular travel off-pavement, get some AT tires. Ijust got a 2017 Explorer Platinum, I pull a boat and often get into dirt(mud when wet) and slippery boat docks. All-season tires just aren't made for this. I've upgraded to the Falken ATs and it does great in these light off-road conditions while not adding much road noise when on pavement.

Ford spokesman wanted to create a luxury trim above the limited trim in the edition of Explorers because many of Explorers buyers were coming from luxury divisions ... I was thinking LIncoln ... but otherwise it was from Acura and whatnot. Moreover, Ford wanted something wanted something unique as opulent for the customer, so the Platinum has fell in place to most luxury buyers and it looks quite pleasant.

the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit is not a less expensive vehicle...probably around 55k. it also has one of the best 4x4 systems in its class with an air suspension and best in class ground clearance, with more power that the eco boost: 360hp and 390lbs with an awesome 8 speed. I'm a fan boy of jeep, but it is clear which is superior.

A Happy Owner of a XLT Sport trim , 6 cyl 290 hp, Leather seats , Dual Sun roofs super SUV Explorer for getting the groceries , I am not forced to put chains on for snowy mountain conditions Mammoth, Big Bear, Arrowhead resorts, On the Road to Vegas smooth as silk Ride, very quite, I Can carry lots of things people or cargo it is great for these purposes. Rear says 4 wheel drive, Well lets talk, Look at the Tires can one reduce tire pressure, to gain traction Not a chance, Can you tow in deep Sand not a prayer. Mine has factory tow package, The dumb tires spin at the worst time and stopped you are period. Note the Gentleman says a few times keep momentum up or there can be problems, he is totally right on this point. The undercarriage of the Explorer has basically no protection at all, And all that`s there is very expensive and delicate. Ford followed the Market and made a Great get the groceries Suv, bit of snow, gravel Vehicle. Marketing this as a 4x4 is not honest, The Explorer is a beefed up All wheel Drive SUV that is great at many less violent things.. My 4x4 is a 1997 off the frame restored Toyota Land Cruiser, Just got back from 150 Trail miles off road ,Rock hills, Sand Washes Large accents, large descents Ruts, Stream crossings you name it we did it ,Adventure in the Mojave Desert . Now this Vehicle completely Dominated the entire route . There are in Fact Different tools for Different Purposes. It comes down to your purpose of Use and Degree of Off Road capabilities required .The Ford Explore is great at the purpose it was engineered to do, The Land Cruiser lacks some of that Capability, but is greater at other capabilities . Now that`s my opinion from experience

appraiserdmitchell its a great car, i love it i want one My father bought one (he wanted a durango i said lets look at the explorer... he bought a 2017 new) Same lay out as yours Its awesome But in the chicago winter and with our -50° this year, the alley was deep with snow and well, he got stuck. Its awesome i love it, its quick 0-60 in 5.7 seconds, beats most cars on the road BUT like you said, like any tool it depends on your situation His got stuck, my 2003 montero sport didnt. I have awd and 4x4, more ground clearance too, and fat tires compared to the explorer Suffice it to say he took my truck and ran over the snow that made him get stuck 💀 Id still take the explorer for every day adventures tho. But off roading, nah, i can keep up to a jeep with my suv, maybe even smoke the stock jeep. But the explorer smokes the jeep on the road, any day of the week. But gets smoked on a trail. Also its quick for a 3 row suv. Really quick. Faster then the escape and edge And the new st version is faster then the other st versions of the edge and escape

Ghassan Daghestani Well, you might want to inform Ford of this because they are reporting the complete opposite. No free upgrades as it's a completely different set of hardware that needs to link properly to all other systems. And no "soon" availability. Ford already stated that Explorer will not receive the upgrade until 2017.
@Farcorner

@TheNajSD
@TheNajSD 8 жыл бұрын
Ghassan Daghestani Read again. "In North America, Ford is making Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available on all 2017 vehicles equipped with SYNC 3, starting with the all-new Ford Escape. Owners of 2016 vehicles equipped with SYNC 3 will have an opportunity to upgrade later in the year." Key phrase "2016 vehicles equipped with SYNC 3". And it's only for the phone app software. Not a complete swap out of SYNC 2 or anything of the sort. 2016 Ford Explorer is not a model with SYNC 3. It will never have a SYNC 3 system unless you mod the vehicle.

I have asked a number of salesmen and they can't answer my question..... Exactly how does the "hill decent" work?? Can you set how fast you want it to crawl downhill or is it a factory-set thing? I would imagine you could set it like a reverse cruise control. Thanks for any answers.

+Daniel Heller It automatically applies the brakes, all you have to do is steer. It keeps inexperienced drivers from jamming on the brakes when there is a slight amount of slippage and losing control.

TheCobruhAlienat0r Sooooo, what speed is it set to keep the car at?? Is it adjustable or no?

Daniel Heller Not sure. All the videos I've seen show the trucks going pretty slow. Like 10mph or less.

TheCobruhAlienat0r The Explorer will be for my wife who is NOT a great driver in the snow. We pretty much live on the side of a mountain that has a treacherous & steep driveway with lots of loose gravel & stones. When we get snow it can get bad, even for me and I drive an '04 F150 FX4. The driveway is steep and that's bad enough, but there's also a cliff on the one side. When we started looking at the new Explorers I loved the fact they have Hill Decent. I just want to know exactly how it works.

We don't have those problems with ours. I have Fords that have been on this planet longer then me, running stock transmissions and engines. I can't complain.

It's sad how cars these days are made more for luxury and high techy than performance or endurance. The newest/youngest year of the cars, suvs, and trucks you see at the trails I go to are 2009-2010

@ahallada 7 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried the water wading yet but it needs a lift kit like the Traxda lift kit for serious off roading.

It is a crossover, Don't expect full size jeep capability or performance. 99% of people who buy these never get into more than an inch of snow and maybe some wet grass.

Nick G bruh an inch of snow? We have had nothing but nor Easters in New England and I’ve had to take my “Crossover” in that shit multiple times nobody was on the road and of coarse my job sucks ass and never closes so do I have a choice? Nope! this bitch went through that shit like nothing it’s not that bad of a vehicle of coarse it does not have Jeep off road capabilities but than again why not just buy a Jeep if your going to go off roading every weekend! But it’s a nice ride and for long trips has very quiet cabin.
