Commodores are more known to be shitboxes compared to the golf’s and the commodores look like shit after 15 years. Golfs are more reliable than you think. Volkswagen’s are all over the world mate and commodores are only limited to Australia and very few in the US. Have fun with your gas guzzling slow V8..

I can't imagine anyone would be choosing between these two cars in the real world. If you love the throb of a V8, want to tow something large or want some extra space you'll choose the Commodore. If you want an economical small medium family friendly vehicle that can combine performance with economy you'll choose the Golf.

I owned a Holden Berlina, last year bought myself a Passat highline wagon. AWD V6 dsg. beautiful car, good enough size. today I can't understand why anyone would think you need that size to feel like you have space when. towing is no issue it pops out more power and torque than the 3.6lt Holden. I once had this mindset but no longer. the VF will always be the best Holden build but no longer will the Americans get my coin after disrespecting Australians, and that goes for Ford oz. I also have more rear space in my wagon as does the passat sedan. something their never appreciated for.

Try keeping a transmission in your holden over 200,000km. ive driven commodores since i was 17! Congratulations sir if you dont replace the auto atleast once it's life time with you. DSG' s biggest issue is people don't understand how to drive one. And of course it's all about power and torque. it's always been Holden's philosophy, so don't kid yourself

Interesting to note that I drive both a Volkswagen golf TSI wagon and an SS Commodore. Dynamically they're both very different cars. The Tsi doesn't have the horse power of the R wagon in this vid but from an enjoyment experience the Commodore is much more fun to drive. The V8 is naturally aspirated and has the tool to pull a load. The VW is turbocharged but I must say is very very fuel-efficient for a 1.4L. But I hate to admit though as soon as I take a passenger with me in the VW I really do feel the extra weight. In the Commodore however I don't notice any difference even if I have two more people in the backseat. In the end it just comes down to preference and purpose.

I purchased a 2016 Redline SSV from Holden with 6 Year Warranty and No service costs. I have had 3 previous SS Commodores and never had a breakdown or major failure, i once had a window switch that needed to replaced because it rattled and that is it. I take my car to my dealer and they give me a courtesy car and i pay nothing. How much does VW charge for ownership? It is not right that we let our industry die. Or for so we can tell someone "i drive an Audi. Mercedes, BMW"

Michael O I bought a '17 Chevy SS (SS-V Redline with heated/cooled seats and Magnetic Ride) this car is AWESOME! I knew about Commodores since VE when we had the Pontiac G8's in the US. I've Holden rebadged mine SS back to it's roots and it's a head turner in Silver Ice Metallic (Nitrate Silver)! LS3 has been a very reliable motor that all the American guys know about because of it's reliability and modding potential!

What's the point? Both cars serve different purposes. The Commodore is a full size wagon while then Golf is the typical European mid wagon. Totally different cars. It didn't overtake, he let it pass to have a go at being the leader. That way both cars have a chance at being in front. Golf pulled the fastest time on 3rd go, but also pulled the 2 slowest times. SS ran consistent 13.7s. If it were an actual drag comp the golf would have been eliminated immediately.

I love the story about these cars, it of course looks like a fun day. But you actually didn't tell me anything about them other than the rear drive SSV is tail happy especially in the wet and the R Wagon understeers more than you'd like. Now I know it was supposed to be just a fun comparison of some fast grocery getters with space to spare. I do appreciate the work that went into it and it did entertain me though I'm no closer to knowing which one is the better machine. Sure one is faster in the tighter corners and the other has the legs on any straight. With a wagon on the radar for the next garage friend and a fast one at that, cause if you want to get a wagon it's got to have grunt or something going for it beyond cubic capacity when it comes to hauling a load. So thanks for the entertainment in comparing these two cubic racers without telling a great deal about them.

what a bizarre video. pitting a v8 ss commodore against a 4cyl golf for a start suggests a comparison of a novice, all the while getting misty eyed over how marvellous the commodore is, despite it being hosed by the humble golf. correct me if i'm wrong there, but i did see the golf in front at the end of the race track shoot out, and the driver finally got the traction control working on run three at the drag strip, and destroyed the commodore, but even so, this is a moot comparison, as anyone with half a brain would not consider an ss commodore if looking at a golf, and vice versa. a ridiculous review. whats next folks, enzo vs corolla? geez. some further food for thought, and a more evenly matched comparison with both cars being sedans and similarly priced, the v6 passat from a couple years ago would easily destroy the commodore, yet its a v6, 2 cylinders down on the holden, which says alot about german engineering. and its a 'boring' shopping hack in the euro world. theres these other things called c63's, m3's, s4's, that, price aside, are on another planet when compared to the commodore complete with limited edition bogan pack.

So the fact is the Golf R is fastest cause the guy doesn't know how to use the system . Ask how much fuel they used. Ive had my R returned to the European spec and the difference is astonishing. Why they detune them is ridiculous. Puts out around 215kws without a single mod under the bonnet other than a ECU remap. Returns 630k / 50 litres which is under 8 litres /100 on mainly highway cycle and some to and from to the shops, school , including Sport mode driving. I would hate to see what a Commodore gets given it the beans. I was actually amazed the Commo kept up at all around that track.

How reliable is the Volkswagen going to be in the future if you keep using the launch control.? Lets face it, cars are driven on the road 98% of the time. By the time the Volkswagen pulls up beside you at the lights and pushes all the buttons and turns this on and that off to set up the launch control the lights would be green and most modern V8s will see it in the rear view mirror. End of story.

Spot on mate. having driving both a 6 litre commodore (VF) and golf r extensively, at a traffic light drag the commodore will EASILY win, in fact the mazda 3 i also drive would demolish the golf. The golf launches super hard with launch control, but honestly, you never use it. In every other situation the DSG lag is a nightmare and makes the car very slow off the mark. Once you get going, it's a different story though. The golf is bloody quick. In terms of reliability... well, the golf has had a coolant leak/consumption issue since new - 3 years later not resolved. The haldex unit needed to be replaced after 4 dealership visits complaining that it was front wheel drive only. Prior to the haldex replacement I was accused of 'chipping' the car - which I had not. The Holden has it's own problems - window switch not working, generally cheap fit and finish, nav system stopped working for a time, then started working again magically... The most reliable and best dealer experiences for me have been at Subaru (STI docklands) and Mazda. Mazda in particular I cannot fault. A friend of mine with a mk 7 golt has experienced DSG issues (clunking, gears not engaging, etc etc...) I would not want to own a VW out of warranty that's for sure.

What on earth hahah okay so at least 3rd time around figured out how to use launch control-ish kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKHKqpaleN6knpI.. Hopefully you managed to put it in race mode, sport traction control and sports mode for transmission.. Looked like you were in comfort mode setting before and waiting a second or two before using accelerator pedal. Quite humorous indeed. For all those people driving a Golf R if you want to get off the line quick. Pop in Race mode & traction control button to sports or off. Then hold left foot on brake, mash accelerator pedal and it goes to about 4000rpm and release brake when ready and boom. get to 100kph in 4-5s max

+JKanimations its not called a pontiac commodore, its the pontiac g8. The vf model is now in america called Chevrolet ss which is essentially the ssv redline while the vauxhall vxr8 gts is the hsv gts

Bodycount actually I’m not a crazy Holden fan in fact I don’t even own one I have a Range Rover and my wife has Golf GTI. I don’t dislike the golf GTI wagon in fact I like it, it’s just they won’t so much money for it when there are cheaper and faster options available. I mean I can’t exactly say that because I have a Range Rover there is probably a cheaper suv that is more powerful and has a better price tag but I like my car and the way it looks you obviously like the golf I have nothing against it in fact I love driving the golf gti hatchback it’s sporty and handles well and has a pretty good interior. They are both very similar in price range and speed anyway sometimes the golf has the advantage or sometimes the commodore does I just like seeing Holden’s on the road and the fact that they don’t look like another boring Toyota or another German car not that I don’t like the look but it’s nice to see a variety of cars.

70MA55 0W3N haha I didn't say all holden fans are like that, but a lot of them are, I only paid 6k for my gti, I could easily get it tuned to be faster then any of the newer ones and still not spend as much as a new one haha, in fact a fully tuned gti can easily hold their own against the Holden and ford V8s, even seen a tuned gti beat a mustang gt 😂
