2016 Toyota Corolla S - Real World Highway Fuel Economy Test

We put our recent used car purchase, a pristine 2016 low mileage Toyota Corolla S, to a real world highway fuel economy test. With 132 horsepower and a CVT, you would expect great fuel mileage. The S trim comes with seven simulated gears and paddle shifters which does help with the typical CVT drone. Surprisingly, the Corolla is actually pretty peppy around down and the CVT is very responsive. Only full throttle acceleration reveals the low horsepower and torque numbers.

I set my cruise control at 55, gets about 45mpg highway. Of course if theres traffic I go faster, don't want to get passed by 80 cars per hour. But if your ever low on gas, do 45mph and you will get closer to 55 mpg. I changed the trans fluid in my 2016 with only 44,000, trying to keep that CVT in good shape since I plan to drive this for at least 10 years, and I lost my last car to CVT problems and they wanted $4K to rebuild.

I noticed that if you have the 16 inch steel rims it will save like 10% on fuel compared to the 17 inch aluminum, they make a difference, I still get 37 mpg but I was getting 41 before I switched rims

Hmm...that is interesting, but makes sense with higher rolling resistance, assuming they are also a little wider? The full tire size, wheel, aspect ratio, and width can all impact mileage. Thanks for sharing!

Let's say you're driving next to a semi on the freeway at 80mph. If you floor the gas, how quickly can you overtake the semi?

Hi. You are talking about something like a 80-100 acceleration to affectively pass. I have not done that in this car. The Corolla cruises pretty good at 80 and I would imagine on flat ground it could get to 100 and pass the truck in an ok/semi safe amount of time. But not something the Corolla is really intended to do swiftly. I think the max speed limit in the us is like 85 in areas of Texas. So not something most folks would need to do. Passing power at more typical speeds, 65-70, is adequate. Thanks for watching and for your question!

Thanks for watching! Yea, that does’t sound too bad. As long as it has a decent service history, it should be really good. It should have had or it will need a transmission fluid change somewhere around that mileage. So double check that. But seems to be a decent price for that mileage. Good luck and happy motoring.

@@hayypapi4281 yea. That is in the ballpark. The key is to make sure it has good service records. Any more than two prior owners is also another thing to be cautious of. These will easily get beyond 200k miles. That is 112k miles left. Assuming 15 thousand a years that is 7.5 years left. So a little over 2k per year, so reasonable in these days of crazy car prices.

I think there's something wrong with my Corolla 😂. I have a 2016 s premium but I roughly get 22 to 24 MPG all city driving. 250ish full tank

@@Gio-zi5lw Mine is 2015 LE Plus and has been about 320 miles full tank. 22 to 25 avg mpg. :( Never really seen my car gives me anything more than 330 miles for full tank.

I have a 2017 Corolla SE with 35 or 36,000 miles and I must drive on the highway with a little bit of city. Between Phillips I average between 390 and 400 miles to the gallon.
