Drums are used in the back to help with articulation clearance as well. People who've converted to discs end up hitting their expensive shocks on the calipers. Most trailers come with brakes, so discs aren't really necessary for the rear. Besides, the pads in those drum brakes are gigantic and have a LOT of surface area contact with the drums. My 2017 Off-Road stops fast when I'm hard on the brakes. They're surprisingly strong, cheap, and easy to service.

True. In the opening scene he’s just flooring it complaining he can’t “get out of the rut.” No shi!t dude...it’s because you’re standing on the skinny pedal. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Really hard to make these trucks look bad, even though I own one and have some gripes. Hitting the “number 6 preset” is not one of them. He’s just being a contrarian at that point. That being said, at the end of the video he gave it 5 out of 5 snowflakes. Is that for the number of Millennials this video offended because of the “global warming” the internal combustion engine contributed to, or perhaps the “habitat destruction” for the Ram truck they spotted frolicking in nature? We’ll never know...

Roman, kind of a suspicious start to your video isn't it? We all know, that little clip of the Tacoma, supposedly "stuck" in the snow, will leave a lasting impression that the remaining 7 minutes of video could never change. Was it intentional or just a coincidence that this video was edited in this manner? Would this editing style have applied to the Colorado? I don't think so............ One of the great highlights from this video of this truck would have worked better and been more representative of the final outcome and what I have to assume is your (favourable?) impression of this vehicle's off road prowess. Your compliments of the truck seem "guarded". In any event, thanks for this video. As a serious off roader for many years, I can relate to the video and find myself rightly impressed with this little gem.

1) Drum brakes are less expensive to maintain, perform very well and are better for dirty sandy conditions. have you never gotten a pebble in your disk brakes? 2) there's a volume control on the steering wheel. i know.. us old guys are conditioned to reach over to the dash, i've hit the preset on mine too.. but the volume is really right there by your left thumb.. right where you need it. Your reviews are great, always enjoyable and informative.. keep up the good work.

I currently own a 2016 Tacoma TRD off road access cab with manual transmission it is not the first Toyota truck I have owned and most likely won't be the last. Anybody who has actually taken their truck to do serious off road knows that modifying your truck to your like is part of the fun. Buying a 4WD is always a compromise not everybody wants a set of BFG's KO2's on their truck.

totally agree with the volume knob. same could be said about the tuner knob but I havent used that in the week Ive owned it and probably wont very often. I actually never really use the volume knob either since it has steering wheel controls. as far as drum brakes go Ill be happy with them until they fail or have an issue. they stop fine and i dont recall every hearing an issue with them. Im not racing my taco so I dont see them being a problem.

So your have fat fingers and hit the number 6 preset. Your hands should be on the wheel anyway. Use the steering wheel volume control that's what it's there for. Nothing even comes close to the tacoma off road and anything that does I'd 60k and up in price.. Once again Toyota built an amazing truck that performs and is reliable as well. Yes, I love my 2016 Trd sport!!!

It will be when your close to rear ending someone and you slam on the brakes and you dont run into the back of that person because you have 4 wheel disc brakes. Drum brakes should only serve one purpose nowadays, and thats to sit inside a disc rotor to act as a parking brake

4:45 you mentioned your gripe with the Tacoma having drum brakes at the rear. Forgive me if I'm wrong but I always thought pickup trucks had drums at the back since drums are way better parking brakes. If you've your truck parked on a decline at max payload, the drum parking brakes can be applied even if the power assisted normal brakes goes off when the engine is switched off.

+ron davis you call that ICE? Stage 1 is easy if there snow is under 10 inches- forget about it... In fact 65+% of Stage 2 is just dirt... Yes, it's frozen dirt but still is dirt- not hard enough conditions even for a crossover like CR-V... Stage 3 is almost the same- on important places there is NO snow or ice... In reality every off-road machine with 2 locks and proper tyres will climb that hill easy...

@m.stefanov
@m.stefanov 8 жыл бұрын
+texasstealth1911 really? I'm dumb? OK, explain me difference between FULL-TIME(or all-time, permanent- call it as you wish) 4x4 system with engaged 2 locks (center & rear) and PART-TIME 4x4 system with engaged rear lock... In fact there is NO DIFFERENCE- you will always have 3 (yes, THREE- 2 rear & 1 front) wheels spinning with same speed. Tacoma uses PART-TIME 4x4 system (as any pick-up truck)- when you shift from 2H to 4H this is equal to 4H + locked center diff in Land Cruiser. When you engage rear diff lock how many locks you are using? Hope you can count to 2... And yes- it's challenging obstacle even without a snow... But for a crossover- NO for a serious truck with 2 locks...

That's false. The 15 pro has piggy back suspension all around where the 16 trd does not. Also better skid plates and tires/wheels. The 17 pro and 15 pro are very similar though and the 17 may be better there when comparing the two.

dash 11 The 16 TRD Off Road has bilstien shocks and a 9.4 inch lift just like the 15 TRD Pro, but the 16 has crawl control/muti terrain select. Thus making it better then the 15. The 17 TRD Pro is going to have fox shocks which will make it the best Tacoma ever and on par with the Raptor.

They have done that trail many times with the Colorado without fail since this vid. In fact it did better than the Tacoma on "Dare". Go to carcomplaints.com and look at the complaints that ended up being on the 16' Taco vs the 16' Colorado. Looks like the Colorado was the reliable one for most folks. lol

Why does Toyota continue to put non off road tires on an off road vehicle?

Probably because 98% of all owners drive mostly on the payment only...

I wondered that about the 4runner as well. We have a 2014 4runner and so far it has never needed off-road tires. Out of its 30,000+ miles, it has been off-road less than a hand full of times. The times it has been off road or through deep snow, the factory tires have been great. I imagine most people who want the full off-road capability, would probably want to a specific tire brand anyways and replace whatever Toyota decided to install from factory.

Most people dont go offroad, people often upgrade tires regardless of how good the stock ones are, so might as well make it a good road tire for the majority

+Retired AF CE Because most people never actually drive off pavement. They figure if you are actually going to go offroad you will put your preferred tires on it anyhow so why waste a bunch of money on stock tires.

Changing drum brakes compared to disc brakes is a pain in the ass, if I’m paying nearly 38k for a truck I would expect it to have disc brakes all the way around.

Drums last way longer than disc. So theres a tradeoff
@Rare_Steak
@Rare_Steak 8 жыл бұрын
Why discredit Toyota's reasons for choosing drum rear brakes? Durability is important on this truck. And why would you "feel better" with all disk brakes if the truck stops well? The Tacoma has a shorter stopping distance from 60mph than the Colorado which has disks on all 4 wheels. I would take plastic bottle cap brakes if they worked better... (just kidding). But from a consumer standpoint instead of an engineering standpoint, shouldn't actual braking performance matter more than what kind of brakes you have?
