2016 Yamaha R1 | First Ride & Impressions

Thanks to the awesome MDSuperSportRider I was able to take the brand new Yamaha R1 for a spin on Skyline Drive, and wow. It is am amazing machine. As stated in the video, please keep eyes peeled for a future review video on this bad boy!

I like how the modes are totally customisable. On mine I have my most aggressive mode as D. The mechanic at the dealer set my D mode up as a track mode the way he likes it, so the lift control is turned off and the TC and Slide Control are really dialed back. I tried it on track and it felt as if I was riding Valentino Rossi's M1. it's an amazing machine and far and away the best sports bike I've ever ridden, but it demands to be taken on track every now and then otherwise you're totally missing the point of it.

I would have LOVED to be on a track riding this thing. I can only imagine the "sharp" throttle response I experienced on the street in A mode would be lovely on a sweeping track.

it's the slide control that really amazes, you can just hit your apex and just use far more throttle than you'd ordinarily think would be safe, and the bike just fixes everything in a Marquezesque power slide. so much fun

i have the same bike ( 60th anna R1 ), i try and explain the slide controll to people but i dont think they quite get it. i love using it to tighten my lines up, definatly takes some getting use to tho for sure.

Sick man, I love how the new R1s look; not sure I'd like to own one other than for track use, but still a great machine. I hear you about the steering, as a new rider that's one of the things that caught me off-guard the first few times I rode a supersport, they're different to turn-in for sure. Upright bikes just need a little nudge and they're leaning, sport bikes need a little bit more countersteering to make things happen.

It was a seriously powerful bike, but I agree with you that it needs to see the track. So true that supersports need more of a turn in but damn once they're in a turn do they stick like glue.

Hey I found a good deal on this same bike. I’ve been riding a Honda cbr600 for a year looking to move up to this particular bike. I’m 6’2 215. Do you think this bike is still ok enough to ride on streets and freeways like the R6??

I haven't watched the yet but loving the content explosion!! oh and sorry for the delay but obviously congrats on getting the Superduke 1290R ma man! everyday that i get to ride it i feel blessed . It can explode from the 60mph to 100 mph in sport under 3 seconds while the beast pulls a ridiculous power wheelie.... yet so smooth a loving when u just wanna get from A to B in comfort .. 1301cc of life changing experience ^_^ k gonna watch now!

I have a 2012 Yamaha R1 and had the Ecu flashed by Superbike Unlimited. I rode a friends new 2016 Yamaha R1 and we both agreed they were similar in power but the new 2016 felt really small for me i'm 6ft2 and my 2012 seems to fit me better.It was very strange with the quick shifter. My mind kept telling me to grab the clutch, just a habit.The 2016 was definitely smoother.

Much as I can appreciate the tech in the R1, I don't really see the point of bikes like it for the street. High torque, more upright ergonomics make a whole lot more sense for the street.

Let me start off by saying I have a 2016 R1 as well. Just got rid of my 15 Gsxr750. I noticed that the throttle by wire is way to twitchy. Did you notice this as well . Mostly when cornering. I also had my ecu flashed ,but not much improvement.

I love the front LEDs as well but those 2 round headlights look horrible and out of place. To me they killed the look of this amazing bike. That's my main reason for not buying an R1.

They are a necessity as the LED lines just don't provide enough light on there own. I try not to let little things like that kill the vibes for an entire bike that has been designed to incredibly well.

@@sugarrfree actually not. the rsv4 has a lot of major engine issues and barely no dealership around the corner. no led headlights and a really old design (2009), like almost 10 years the same.

powerwise both are crazy. rsv4 more nimble / r1 more stable. r1 has the better electronic package. rsv4 comes with the better sound out of the box but if you just put an akrapovic slip on to the r1 it will sound really insane and deep.
