I've lived in the Austin area since 1986 and as much hate Interstate 35 gets I love it and appreciate it. I remember being a little sad when U.S. 81 was decommissioned since I thought it was cool to see IH 35 / U.S. 81 signs in the rural parts.

Austin being the fastest growing city isn't reflected in the highway system. I-35 being the only major interstate highway in the metro is a mere 6 lanes all the way through. It probably has the worst freeway system for a city its size.

it could certainly use an additional 6 lanes to cope with the thru traffic. But... I live in San Antonio, and I-10 is pretty much 10 lanes or more all the way from downtown(where it merges with I-35 btw) to the most northern reaches of the city, and there is still bumper-to-bumper traffic daily there.

i live here, couldn't agree more. With this many people, for it not to have a full interstate loop like Minneapolis/St. Paul and/or Houston is ridiculous.

No they were please don't get me wrong, but in my experience driving through Texas (I was heading to Dallas then to San Antonio) I was constantly tailgated and cut off as if I was going slow but I was going like 10 mph over the limit to try to keep up with traffic lol

Matt NYC people in austin drive 95mph on Ih35 all day every day. It's even worse on the toll sincec the speed limit there is 85 people go 100+
