+Bunz21 I've been reading that Ford's new engine might be part of the modular family. If that's the case, why can't GM build a V8 using the Gen V small-block? They were making aluminum 7.0L engines, and 7.4L engines with CGI in the LS family, so why not make something 7.0+ liters in displacement but using a CGI version of the Gen V engine small- block? Big-blocks would be awesome, but I understand the cost of having two different blocks.

It's all marketing my friend. All of the truck companies spend millions a year on marketing companies to figure out where the best money possible will be made. If they find that one day there's a hole in the market for a 7.0+ liter gas engine, that's what they'll put in the trucks! Until then we can only dream

The gas saves you 10k dollars when purchasing this truck and if you're towing less than 14k and not doing it for a job every day it is great. This motor will last forever. I've towed an 11k fifth wheel about 1-2 weekends a month all over for a year now with this gasser. Love this truck. If you're driving these extreme inclines, at altitude, with the max towing weight every day, or just have the excess cash, you might want the diesel.

Hoss Cartwright oh yeah. It's like owning a shiny new framing hammer while wearing polished steel toed boots. . . .why. . . ? I do agree, if you don't work with your truck, the why own it. (Although there are some $100k truck around me, with 24" wheels and low profile mud tires that exemplify that choice in life). I just don't work with it all the time; not enough to justify a 25% increase in price for a 10% necessity. Which, I think is what these guys are trying to point out. This truck, and other gasoline versions they've been testing, are quite a significant value proposition that will do what you need when called upon. If you full time RV, which is essentially what these "tiny homes" craze are nowadays, and maybe move your trailer only 2-3 times a year, why spend the extra? I could put an extra $10k into my RV, my RV lot, a little getaway piece of property in the mountains where I pull my trailer, an extra getaround vehicle, or even my child's college fund for the inconvenience of not having the diesel for the few times it would be a better tow vehicle choice. BTW - The everyman can actually rent a diesel truck from Enterprise that they allow you to tow HUGE loads, if you need to. It'll only cost you $600-$700 a week . . . Another TFLTruck addressed this similar thought in a viewer's question so I'll stop there. Digressing, if you have the need, ALWAYS get the right tool for the job. It's just sometimes you don't need a coil nail gun and a 20gal. compressor if you're only repairing the roof on your shed.
@cvcc8083
@cvcc8083 7 жыл бұрын
That's not really true. You could always come up with a bigger, more powerful gas engine for this, but GM needs a better transmission first and foremost. The 6.0L are super stout and can handle the hard work, but the transmissions are geared poorly and erratic. Just simply having better transmissions would've made a huge difference in the test.

The 6.0's specs don't quiet stack up to the Ford 6.2 or Ram 6.4 but unlike those two motors the GM motor will still be running in 10 years. Diesels are awesome for rich guys and heavy hauling but the reliability and maintenance problems you encounter with the modern diesels make the gas trucks a very viable option for guys like me that never tow anything but want the looks of a 3/4 ton.

By the "has 345k miles on it" comment, I'd guessing you've got a "slightly older" that maybe doesn't ride as nice as the newer ones, but I'm shopping around for my first truck so I wanted to confirm and see if you had any other feedback to share (especially if it would apply to a newer year-model)? I'm seriously considering a Diesel Dually so I can go all the way on a 5th wheel and never worry that I can't get somewhere because I went cheap on the truck, but I also don't want to spend $75k to get what I want OR go cheap when a bit more would have really helped. Anyone else with helpful advice/facts, I'll all ears. I have family that works for GM so I'll be hung if I buy anything else (on top of NOT getting the GM family price I get otherwise), but I really want tech/features I don't see in the Chevy and I like the style of Ford and Dodge more. To boot, the Dodge mega-cab would be HUGE for us if I do end up hauling around the fmaily (2 adults, 3 kids) and have to live in the truck for days while driving because we will be able to keep SO much more accessible (food, changes of clothes, entertainment, blankets for naps, etc..). Said another way, the goal is a truck I can use to travel the family with, while pulling a 5th wheel (with everything we'll be living with). This will also be my daily vehicle when not traveling and I'm a project guy so this truck will be busy and likely end up pulling other (lighter) loads regulalry.

They could definitely use a newer, more powerful gas engine, but I've always thought their gas HD's biggest letdown was the transmission. The issue is the gearing hunting combined with tallness/space of the gears. Just when your into the peak power, it up-shifts, which is what you'd expect, but the RPM dips so low, it bogs down and has to shift back down again just to keep you going. What the hell is that about? Beyond that, it's way too erratic, never being able to find the gear it wants, exactly what you don't want in any transmission, much less a heavy duty truck transmission. Really, if they just improved on their transmission, even the their dinosaur of a gas engine would perform much, much better.

The Vortec 6200 is all-aluminum. HD engines are pretty much (TMK) always iron blocks. The 6200 likely would not withstand the same amount of abuse as the iron 6.0. The 8100 would work all day and then some, but its gas mileage would make the relatively archaic 6.0 look like a fuel sipper.
@franz4294
@franz4294 7 жыл бұрын
+SurelyYewJest You're right about the strength of the aluminum block being an issue, but I bet a bigger engine with a better transmission wouldn't be much worse on fuel under these conditions. This engine was laboring hard and the trans was only making things worse. An engine with more muscle and trans to keep in its power band would probably get up the hill much easier.

Bryan E I made this comment because it would be interesting to see how naturally aspirated gas trucks would perform at lower altitudes. These guys do a great job testing in that environment but it would be nice to see how gas trucks would do below 3500 feet.. The diesel trucks perform really well under any scenario. I tow an 8000 lb. tag along travel trailer with a Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi and it works really good. Fuel mileage seems to be the same while towing as my previous half ton but a little worse when not towing.

I would like to see the gas HD trucks compared more closely with half tons. I think the diesel is the way to go if towing heavy, but I think a lot of weekenders are towing weights that are right in between 1/2 and 3/4s. Do you buy a half ton that is better for day to day and stress it more for towing or do you buy a 3/4 gas that isn't as good for commuting but is better suited for towing? How do the gas HDs tow closer to the 6-9k lb range?

I know this is an older video. I watched it because I have a 2018 2500hd that I tow a small travel trailer with it and am thinking of upgrading to a larger 5th wheel rv. Something in the 30 foot range. Wanted to see how it did the Ike gauntlet fully loaded. Fast Lane truck does a great towing test with these trucks. Yea I thought about a diesel but I live in the east and only tow the rv 8 to 10 times a year. Didn't seem worth all the extra bucks for the diesel.

I'm a Mopar guy but honestly for that weight, grade, and altitude once they are up there a ways, that's not bad really for a NA gas V8 that's original dates back to over a decade ago. It's obviously not a close-ratio 6-speed seeing how many RPM's were lost dropping gears -- what was the final drive ratio on that truck? (I missed it if they said it) Gearing is noticeably closer on new 8-spd and 10-spd trannies. 6-speeds will suffice in an occasional tow vehicle (especially at that price). They still make the old 4-spds look like childs' play.

For the guys who pull campers with there 6.0, How would you compare the pulling ease of a early 2000's 6.0 compared to a newer 6.0 (2015 and newer)? I can't hardly find anyone that pulls there camper with a 6.0, everyone has a duramax. Just wanted opinions on your experience pulling a camper that gets alot of wind resistance, compared to a flatbed that has hardly any wind resistance.
@freetoroam7769
@freetoroam7769 3 жыл бұрын
This is a very late reply to your question, and not a comparison with the 6.0 era you mention, but I used my regular cab 1988 GMC 3500 with the 454 to haul a 3200 lb slide in camper for 27 years. Performance was adequate. Then in 2017, ordered a new GMC dually double cab 4x4 with the 6.0, plus a new, and much heavier slide in camper. The 2017 with the 6.0 does a much better job hauling the weight since the power band is much higher. The 454 would crap out way too soon. I live in the mountainous PNW, and have never needed to "floor" the 6.0 to keep up with traffic with a 4500 lb slide in camper. I have no intentions of going to a diesel with the load I currently carry. And the head wind does degrade performance slightly.

Back when I special ordered my new Super Duty, the 6.0L Power Stroke people had a lot of problems with thier trucks, and the 6.4L Power Stroke people had it even worse. Also, the new 6.7L Power Stroke was having turbo and def problems. So, I told myself, for the 5 times I tow heavy a year, the 6.2L gas will work just fine. Plus, it will save me a boat load of money. I bought reliability over power.

The Crew Cab long bed (longer wheel base) has more towing power, as well as the 2wd model. Also, if it had been a 2wd, it would have lighter in weight than the 4wd you drove. And never tow with 20” tires! 17’s are best. GM only puts them on for guys that like the looks of the larger tire. The 17s can carry more weight and are safer. I think you guys used the wrong configuration of the Silverado 2500hd for an accurate comparison.

That big front end kills the highway miles. But my recent road trip down to valley here in Arizona I got 19mpg once I hit Phoenix that's at 150 miles one way. But mostly down hill. On the way back up I got 14.5 on the gas up hill. Average would put me at 16.7ish mpg. It's does alot Better then I thought it would.

I have a 2015 2500HD 6.0 Z71 LT crew cab 4x4. I tow with it a lot. Mostly under 10k. But some times over. I don't tow at high altitudes, or up steep grades like that as there are none here. This truck does everything I ask of it with no problems. I have towed 13k with it and had no problems at all. A few bolt ons and tune go a long way in this truck. But even stock there great trucks. Take care of it and they run forever to! I could have bought a diesel truck but the 10k added cost did not seem worth it for what I do with my truck. FYI you can get some smokin deals on these things if buy at the end of the year. The truck in this video was listed at over 43k. Mine has a lot of options that one does not including the larger cab. I paid just over 46k out the door tax title and plate included for my truck. I have NAV, remote start, fog lights, Home link, power seats, Z71 package, step bars, mud flaps, spray in bedliner, and lots more that truck does not have and before taxes title and plate I paid almost the same as that one stickers for! (My sticker price was a little over 53k) These are great trucks. If you need to tow a bit more than a 1500 can handle, or you're just going to be maxing a 1500 out then this is the truck for you!

They could, and I think they are planning on replacing the L96 Vortec with a more modern engine, but they're in desperate need of one now and I don't see the going much larger than the 6.2L L86. They could, and they likely will at some point, possibly for the 2018/2019 trucks. But even if they do an iron block 6.2, its power will be reduced from the 450-460 of the LT1. I'd peg an iron block version ready for commercial HD abuse to be 385-400hp tops, and 420-440tq.

I have the same year 2017 Chevy 2500 hd with the gas engine but I don't really pull any thing because I don't need to that's why I didn't get a diesel. Why not do a more practical load test instead of just the same thing all the time because it's obvious a gas isn't going to stand a chance on a diesel course. I'm just trying to say it's kinda a unfair test and not very practical.

Lol! You guys crack me up with your "semi bridge" remarks. "Real" trucks follow a bridge law chart which pertains to length vs. number of axles vs weight. That has nothing to do with your tote placement. The reason you see them spread the load divided is to place the weight over the axle groups to reduce stress on the trailer structure which you did the opposite here in this case.
