HUGE thanks to Chevy for letting me borrow this Chevy Silverado EV 4WT. This video is not sponsored. 95% of the driving on this towing test was done on the freeway at about 75mph.
Watch Engineering Explained talk about the Cybertrucks High pressure zone: • Can Tesla’s Cybertruck...
Watch my full EV Humvee build here: • Can I build my OWN Ele...
Its pretty crazy that the Silverado can be 'filled up' with about 25 dollars of electricity and go drive 450 miles. But how far can it drive with a full 11,000 pound trailer behind it? Today we find out!
How far can the Chevy Silverado EV tow 11,000lbs? - (New Champion)

My favorite incident in my Rivian was getting off the freeway, and ending up at the top of the offramp next to a lifted RAM Cummins who started rolling coal next to me. I just rolled my eyes. The light turned green, and he made a ton of noise turning left as fast as he could. Then we ended up next to each other at the red light after crossing over the freeway. He started rolling coal again. This time, pointed in a straight line, I let him have it when the light turned green. He floored it, I left him in the dust before the two lanes merged into one. Oh, and I was towing a 28', 7000-8000 lb travel trailer. He wasn't towing anything. And I was low on juice, that exit was to stop at a charging station, I only had ~8% battery left, so was slightly power-reduced. Having to clean up the trailer from items that fell off shelves onto the floor was worth it to embarrass the coal roller.
@WanderingWatts

lol. I’ve been rolled twice towing in my R1T. I just ignored it though, because I wasn’t confident my trailer could handle the launch. @@canonicalcriticIt’s about right, more or less. EV cars are heavily impacted by small loss of efficiency. And wind resistance is the largest loss for EV. I have an EV and it’s rated at 272 miles of range. In real world at 75mph I get 200 miles. At 85mph I drop to about 170 miles. At 50-55mph I can get 250 miles. Roughly explained, electric engines are basically very efficient and have very little loss, but as your speed increases, the aerodynamic drag increases exponentially. But gas engines are very very inefficient, especially at low speed. Efficiency gets better with higher speed, which kind of counteracts drag. And that’s why you don’t dramatically lose as much range with higher speed with gas car.
@swecreations
@swecreations 4 ай бұрын
@@canonicalcritic Air resistance increases by squared (so 4x) with a doubling of speed. As majority of drag on a car is aerodynamic above ~60 km/h, especially so when towing, reducing speed has an absolutely massive effect on consumption. I can say with 100% confidence what I've quoted above is true from my own testing, Bjørn Nyland in Norway also maintains spreadsheets with over a hundred EVs that he's tested and reviewed on his KZbin channel at both 90 km/h and 120 km/h, (56 and 75 mph) and range increases of around 40% is typical, which are openly available for anyone to read.
@swecreations
@swecreations 4 ай бұрын
@@anthonyawuley Below about 20 mph EVs stop gaining range with lower speeds, due to parasitic drain from electrical systems, infotainment, lighting, and such. Most EVs will do anywhere between ~150-200% of their EPA-rated range at ~30-40 mph constant speeds. Reason the speed is so much higher for ICE cars, at around 40mph instead of 20 mph, is because the parasitic drain from running an engine is so enormous that below that most of the energy consumed will simply be to idle the engine.

Doesn't that really depend on what you are using it for? If you do various jobs (or shopping runs) around town / in a city you'll never need to charge during the day. (Which is also why I don't have an EV. Around town I do everything by electric bike, seeing I live in the Netherlands. Only ever use my car for longer distances and holidays.)

I mean. Every day that goes by there is more research and development being done. By the time you probably really want to get an EV the technology will have advanced.

@@FoobarDesign That's fair. But if I spend that much on a vehicle then it course it'll probably be my only vehicle. So if I go on a road trip then I refuse to waste an hour to charge multiple times during that trip.

You haven't been sponsored by Chevy but you somehow just accidentally happened to forget to mention that Silverado has an almost double battery size which translates into one more tonne of weight and abysmal efficiency which was also just mysteriously not mentioned through the whole video.

Pretty good result. Also this truck can charge way faster than it showed there. Another KZbin channel I watched did a towing test with all four of the trucks, I believe fort Collins Colorado up and over the Rocky mountains to Grand junction and back. But it was 6,700 lb or 7,000 lb. They got 240 mi on the Chevy. With about 15% battery left when they got to the destination. When they plugged in it was pulling I think 330 kilowatts to about 50% and then held over 200 kilowatts to 80%. 15% to full took about 1 hour. And cost about $120 lol. All the other trucks required multiple charging stops both directions. The Silverado made it all the way to the end with one stop and then all the way back. It really is a hell of a good truck. It's just got a hell of a lot bigger battery which is what you need if you're going to do this kind of work. Also I believe it can output 11 kilowatts in the bed. And I think GM sells some equipment for your house to make the truck be a battery backup. GM did a lot right with this truck. And honestly it's not that much more expensive than a well equipped Denali.

For full EV towing, given the distances I cover and the country I live in with its ‘after thought’ charging infrastructure I’d want to see between 250-300miles range, but this Chevy is impressive never the less. And when towing all the time, you ain’t worried about being the fastest off the line. It’s about keeping the power up going up hills and not feeling like you have a barge on the back pulling and pushing you when you accelerate and decelerate.

Would be good to also show the vehicles' total battery capacity and miles per kw. The Rivian i believe has a total of 130kw, the cybertruck has around 120 and the ford lightning has like 130 or so from what i remember for those reviews, but this chevy ev has over 200kw battery from what their website says so no wonder it goes longer. Thats like saying a corolla with a 20 gallon gas tank is the new champion of range between a 10 gallon mazda 3 and a 12 gallon civic without showing their actual mpg. Yes you did mention cold weather but maybe retry this during winter and see how it goes and also mentioning the battery size on each vehicle tested? just my 2 cents.

This is very controversial because heat as well as cold kills batteries. You should take this to a whole new level. You and Dan have the pull to make it happen. Get as many comparable comparable trucks and have them tow in the same conditions. Example first video leave Las Vegas and also a support vehicle ya know a Tesla battery pack trailer to get the slackers to the next charging station. Vegas to St George Then in the middle of winter maybe Tooele towards Wendover. For a side video as awesome as it would be to see them compare pulling Parleys I think Soldiers Pass would be a safer comparison but think for this test you might need a roll back available. Thanks for all you do keep up the good work

I'd like to see the same test but with a 24-foot enclosed car trailer, it would be interesting to see the difference in aerodynamics. I've seen the auto industry groups testing trucks towing a 10,000 pound (4,535.92 kg) trailer up the mountains here in Colorado, the trailers they use are tiny.

Towing range is influenced by many factors. Two of the most impactful are frontal area (aerodynamics) and weight. It'd be interesting to see a range comparison between the flatbed/electric Hummer combo and a run of the mill enclosed trailer. Something like a 7'x16' might be a good comparison. It'd also be interesting to see the difference between the trailer laden vs. unladen. My guess is that those numbers wouldn't be all that far apart (
