HUGE thanks to Chevy for letting me borrow this Chevy Silverado EV 4WT. This video is not sponsored. 95% of the driving on this towing test was done on the freeway at about 75mph.
Watch Engineering Explained talk about the Cybertrucks High pressure zone: • Can Tesla’s Cybertruck...
Watch my full EV Humvee build here: • Can I build my OWN Ele...
Its pretty crazy that the Silverado can be 'filled up' with about 25 dollars of electricity and go drive 450 miles. But how far can it drive with a full 11,000 pound trailer behind it? Today we find out!
How far can the Chevy Silverado EV tow 11,000lbs? - (New Champion)

My favorite incident in my Rivian was getting off the freeway, and ending up at the top of the offramp next to a lifted RAM Cummins who started rolling coal next to me. I just rolled my eyes. The light turned green, and he made a ton of noise turning left as fast as he could. Then we ended up next to each other at the red light after crossing over the freeway. He started rolling coal again. This time, pointed in a straight line, I let him have it when the light turned green. He floored it, I left him in the dust before the two lanes merged into one. Oh, and I was towing a 28', 7000-8000 lb travel trailer. He wasn't towing anything. And I was low on juice, that exit was to stop at a charging station, I only had ~8% battery left, so was slightly power-reduced. Having to clean up the trailer from items that fell off shelves onto the floor was worth it to embarrass the coal roller.

lol. I’ve been rolled twice towing in my R1T. I just ignored it though, because I wasn’t confident my trailer could handle the launch. @@canonicalcriticIt’s about right, more or less. EV cars are heavily impacted by small loss of efficiency. And wind resistance is the largest loss for EV. I have an EV and it’s rated at 272 miles of range. In real world at 75mph I get 200 miles. At 85mph I drop to about 170 miles. At 50-55mph I can get 250 miles. Roughly explained, electric engines are basically very efficient and have very little loss, but as your speed increases, the aerodynamic drag increases exponentially. But gas engines are very very inefficient, especially at low speed. Efficiency gets better with higher speed, which kind of counteracts drag. And that’s why you don’t dramatically lose as much range with higher speed with gas car.
@swecreations
@swecreations Ай бұрын
@@canonicalcritic Air resistance increases by squared (so 4x) with a doubling of speed. As majority of drag on a car is aerodynamic above ~60 km/h, especially so when towing, reducing speed has an absolutely massive effect on consumption. I can say with 100% confidence what I've quoted above is true from my own testing, Bjørn Nyland in Norway also maintains spreadsheets with over a hundred EVs that he's tested and reviewed on his KZbin channel at both 90 km/h and 120 km/h, (56 and 75 mph) and range increases of around 40% is typical, which are openly available for anyone to read.
@swecreations

@@anthonyawuley Below about 20 mph EVs stop gaining range with lower speeds, due to parasitic drain from electrical systems, infotainment, lighting, and such. Most EVs will do anywhere between ~150-200% of their EPA-rated range at ~30-40 mph constant speeds. Reason the speed is so much higher for ICE cars, at around 40mph instead of 20 mph, is because the parasitic drain from running an engine is so enormous that below that most of the energy consumed will simply be to idle the engine.

Jerryrigeverything. Perfect video idea. Do a towing range test. A gas truck vs an electric truck in an urban/suburban environment. Like contractors would use locally around a city center. NOBODY does this. Steady state cruising is the worst for EV’s and the best for gas. City driving is the opposite. An EV can take advantage of regen, where as a gas truck has to dissipate all that energy with the brakes. The heavier the towing weight the more of advantage the EV should have. If we are talking about a 25mph suburban environment, I bet a silverado EV would have more range than a 1/2 ton with a 25 gallon tank with a very heavy load.

Yep. Takes like 2 minutes to fill a tank with gas. Takes the guy at the pump in front of you 2 minutes as well. Factor in waiting time for a charger and this sucks. I still kinda want one though because the new normal for gas here is $5 a gallon.

My problem with the Silverado is that the introduction cost is around $100k, and that’s not realistic for almost anyone. I’d LOVE to get an electric truck, but not with those costs. Ford is about the only choice if you aren’t willing or able to pay that much.

I think the question to ask is which of the three trucks is profitable to manufacture. It's easy to get high range vehicles when you're not making a profit making it. I don't see Chevy ever being profitable making EV's.

For all the bragging from Tesla about towing capacity, speed, bullet proof doors, etc., this just shows that the traditional guys know what real truck owners want. I think Chevy knocked it out of the park with design and performance. Yes it has the biggest battery size but that means they were listening to what the market wants. I can guarantee the majority of people buying a Cybertruck are buying it because they want to stand out and look different. Real truck people will be buying the Rivian, Ford or Chevy.

These videos are very informative. I know my boat is signifcantly lighter than 10k lbs. but still would like to at least get to the lake 196 miles away. If it's charged by the time to drive home, that would be the minimum requirement. The Silverado EV is getting close...

Assuming 8 MPG and a 23 gallon fuel tank at highway speeds towing 11,000 pounds, a 5.0 liter Coyote-powered F150 will have a range of about 180 miles. For an electric car to match that is _seriously_ impressive! The EcoBoost models actually have _less_ towing range, closer to 160 miles and 7 miles per gallon, due to turbocharged engines consuming more fuel at high loads.

Chevy Silverado max rated range: 440 miles, $97K, 0-60, 4.5 sec Rivian R1T rated max range: 420 miles, $84K, 0-60, 3.4 sec Not exactly a material rated range difference. The Rivian test was not only cold weather, but it was not the max pack, it was the 320 mile battery pack.

Two times battery? Not two times the range? I think you got the numbers backwards! The batteries: 200 / 123 is nowhere near two times more! There is only 63% more battery capacity. The two, 177 miles is very close to double the 90 miles: the towing distance grew by 97%. That is, the Silverado made 177 miles with a 200 kWh battery (0.89 miles/kWh) and the Cybertruck made just 90 miles with a 123 kWh battery (only 0.73 miles/kWh)...

This is actually quite impressive because very few people would be towing at max capacity....ever. If you have a 2000lb boat, one could assume you could easily get in the 250 mile range out of this truck WHILE towing.

Just finished a 1200 mile road trip across california and Oregon then back in our Tesla and we were charging probably about as frequently as you would be doing the same roadtrip in the silverado. that's pretty impressive (tho I'd honestly wait until it has NACS standard so you can use superchargers, def. made the charging part of the trip painless)

Chevy engineers aren't performing magic here, they just stuck an enormous battery pack into their trucks. The battery in the Silverado/Sierra is over 65% larger than the Cybertruck's. Yes, the ambient temperature, tire type, aerodynamics, etc. make a difference, but when it comes to towing, the _vast_ majority of the difference is simply down to the difference in battery capacity.
