Your an outstanding commentator. All very good points and information about real people. Thank you. I bought a 2016 Fat Boy S about 6 months ago and I really like it. I do wish it could corner better. But it is a muscle bike plain and simple. I ride it back and forth from California to Montana at the Canadian border a few times a year and its 1,400 miles one direction, its been pretty comfortable. The ride could be better but its not bad. A new seat will mostly take care of everything related to the ride. Thanks again.

For the last two decades I’ve been on a 2004 sportster I bought new but just got a new to me 2016 Fatboy Lo In charcoal denim with 8,000 miles on it and I freaking love this bike. Coming from the sportster this Fatboy rides like a Cadillac. I plan on 100-300 mile day trips and 600-1000 mile long weekend road trips on this bike as it’s plenty comfortable for me. Only added a windshield and may add cruise control but this will be great for me. I haven’t ridden it on the highway yet as it’s cold up here in New England right now. A lot of the girls I ride with are on Softail Deluxe models and they do 2500 mile trips taking it slow doing 200-250 miles a day just soaking in the scenery on the slower back roads which imo is the way to tour. Looking forward to heading up to Bar Harbor Maine on this thing this coming summer!

Hi Matt, loved the commentary. Some very true insights - I'm new to Harley and indeed did find it surprisingly easy to walk it around, given how heavy it is compared to my old K1300S. I've got a customised Screamin Eagle version Fat Boy S and absolutely love it - you're dead right, it is ideal for low speed poser cruising, yet you can crank it up every now and then and feel the torque. I found the riding position a little strange at first, having come from a sports tourer, and have eased my own comfort by getting a new seat with driver backrest - I'm 6'2" and like you, found more comfort with the seat slightly further back. Thanks again - keep up the good work.

Harley Davidson considered this bike a bomb dropped on Japan when this bike was introduced to compete with the Japanese imports at the time. The problem with Harley Davidson today as compared to Japan and other foreign imports is Harley Davidson is significantly hampered in exporting these bikes to other countries. Taxes on these bikes are insane, pushing bikes like the FatBoy to as much as $52,000 in Asia. It is no wonder Harley Davidson is not doing well outside the US compared to other companies. This is one of the issues that Trump is faced with. American goods are just taxed to hell outside the US and the US Government does not force its leveraging power to control this. This is partly due to the US debt owed to other countries. For example, China holds 1 trillion in US Debt. This greatly reduces US leverage to enforce export power to China. Why in the hell are we so indebted to China? The US sells bonds to other countries to pay for government spending. It is as simple as that. US income taxes can not pay for all the government spending, so the US sells bonds for the balance of the money it needs to run the country. Well, those bonds cost the US more than it's worth. It also cost the US power to leverage exports to other countries; sort of like the strength of your credit report. This applies not only to the American auto industry, but is also applies to agricultural goods, steel, heavy industry, weapons, and just about all the major commodities. So when Trump says that he is going to reduce the taxes American pay to the Government, you have to do more than just clap in jubilee. You must then ask the question, how are you going to pay for that tax reduction. Well, the real way to do it is to reduce the public debt, thereby reducing the amount of money the US needs to take from it's citizens for domestic spending. I'm not a fan of Harley Davidson, but I do support the USA and our way of life. I just wish we can reduce that debt we owe to foreign countries. It is the key way to strength our economy and increase the value of the dollar.
@BFD15i7 жыл бұрын
Don't want to get too political here, but just think twice about your tax-story.. Yes, some countries put on extra-taxes to products from other countries (not only to US-products). BUT the USA do this, as well. Ever heard about the chicken-tax? Yes, it is still active for cars, for example. I think that Trump's "america first" sounds good at first, but the way he wants to fulfill his promises, sounds very short-minded. It is a very complex topic that can't be discussed (don't even think about "solving" this) in just a few comments or tweets and decrees.
@chtomlin7 жыл бұрын
haha, so you think you are more business savvy than Pres Trump, lol. Get a clue Flo B...
@benth1627 жыл бұрын
It is really not all that complex FLOB32. Someone like Donald Trump just needs to make the decision to do what must be done. The complexity only arises and demands attention when special interest push the government to subsidize them instead of someone else. In actuality there should be a higher tax on all imports, to force rich corporations to produce their products at home thus facilitating job procurement for the middle class. I am speaking to manufactured good, not fruit and vegetable products purchased in Central and South America. Beef is different as we have more than enough room to grow all the beef we want. The middle class cannot have it both ways though. They may want their cake and eat it to, but realistically they cannot. If all jobs came back home, the wages would necessarily need to be lower thus producing goods that the middle class would be able to afford. Our society must get out of it consumerism mentality and only purchase those things that we really need instead of all the crap purchased for Christmas and thrown away a year later.
@chtomlin7 жыл бұрын
mostly good, but yes, you can have your cake and eat it too.....maybe not so much icing on that cake, but bringing jobs and keeping jobs is critical, thus actually reducing people's wants as they are more occupied.
@A-FrameWedge7 жыл бұрын
Rumple Stiltskin If we get a lot more jobs the wages will go up, supply and demand, the companies will have to pay more to get the good workers because there will be less to choose from.

Zealistic, great review. I'm a lifelong rider on and off, but not for the past 5 years since a bad spill. Friends are encouraging me back into the saddle. I'm between the Fat Boy S and the Fat Bob. The Local club does some intermediate trips and runs. Stocky guy 5' 8" 200 with a 30" inseam. Any suggestion?
@MattLaidlaw8 жыл бұрын
The Fatbob is going to be a better handling bike and more fun to ride in the twisties because of the lean angle. You also have more options to upgrade suspension which you might at 200lbs if you're going to do longer rides. The Fat boy S is nice with the punch that the 110 gives you. It's a lot of fun to ride with that power. It seems like at your height the bike will fit you good too. I have a 36 inch inseam and the relationship between the seat and controls is no good for me. It's a tough call man. I don't see an obvious choice with you. The stock ride quality on the Fatbob will be better.

I really like the fatboy so far it is lighter and more nimble than other HD's I have owned. I am down to my 72 FLH and this 98 FLSTF now. i don't really see much difference in power between the 98 Evo and the two twin cams I had (01 FLHRCI & 02 FLSTC) I can work on the 98 myself without all the computer junk.

I just sold my '07 Street Bob with plans on buying a Street Glide. I do a bit of touring and am tired of being uncomfortable. I also found the Street Bob gets a bit shaky cornering/passing at high speeds. I love the look of Fatboy S and am considering one of these instead of the Street Glide. With an aftermarket touring seat and a batwing fairing, do you think this would be a step up from the Street Bob in regards to touring?
@CactusJack2528 жыл бұрын
I would get a road king over the fat boy s. If you want a fairing and all that then get the street glide. The street glide has a lowered rear suspension by an inch over the road king. It just depends on what you want. I would stay away from the softail if you plan on touring.
@chrissmith24927 жыл бұрын
the road glide is also a great ride. I personally have a 2016 fatboy s and I love the damn thing, I love how it rides, its got great power and throttle response, I feel like I'm on my sportbike when I hit the throttle, also I find it 2 be very comfortable 2 ride and could ride this all day and night. I put an after market backrest on it and it is so comfortable. I rode the road glides, both the ultra and the and special, both great rides, I just didnt like all the vibration when in idle. The fatboy S is a smooth ride and is also very smooth in idle. I have mine with the 16inch apes and the saddle bags as well. i'm 5'8'' and the apes are perfect. The fairing on the road glide is fixed 2 the frame which makes the fairing more stable when riding, especially at higher speeds.

Hey, Thanks for the Awesome reviews on the Fat Boy S & Softail Slim S. I'm a new rider and have an iron 883 for my first season of riding , but now i'm looking to get something a little bigger , more comfortable and little more power. I'm trying to decide between the Fat Boy s & Softail Slim S . Upon riding them both and reviewing them , which one did you prefer. with handing , leaning into a curve , comfort etc.??
@MattLaidlaw8 жыл бұрын
The Ride comfort is slightly better on the Fatboy because of the seat and larger rear tire. The handling is slightly better on the Slim because of the narrower rear tire. They are pretty comparable and lets face it - the slight performance variances don't matter a whole lot on a cruiser. Get the one that suits your needs better and the one that you prefer the style of. The Fatboy is setup for two people with the seat and pegs, I don't know if that matters to you....

Thanks for the video, Matt. I think I meet you about 3 months ago in your store. I already test ride the Fat Boy S in Riverside HD this morning. I really like it. Do you have 0% interest rate and good deal for me? I'm willing to put 50% down of the bike. Let me know.

Great review! Quick question, how do you keep your turning lights on all the time together with the running light ?

Excellent review Matt! I just bought a 2016 Fat Boy S and was wondering if the mufflers on the S are different then the standard Fat Boy. Physically they look different but I'm wondering if they're a more free flowing muffler then what is on the standard model. I was thinking of going with the Screamin Eagle Street Cannon slip-on's but they do not show available for the Fat Boy S model and was wondering why that might be. I would like a little more sound over stock, but do not want too loud nor do I want to lose any low-end torque. Do you have a recommended slip-on for this bike if the Street Cannons do not work?

The mufflers are different. They are a higher performance muffler (screamin' Eagle). I think the Street cannons and for touring chassis bikes only. If you want a louder muffler for a softail I would get a vance and hines or other after market muffler. If you really want your bike to sound mean I would get a full system like the Vance & Hines long shots or short shots but those full systems can be really loud. They sound amazing though.

Funny you mentioned Victory and now they are defunct thanks to Polaris preferring the Indian brand.
