Agreed 100%. I don’t know why people keep saying “oh it’s so slow”. It’s not designed to be fast. It’s designed to be a great adventure vehicle. Plenty of room for 5 people. Plenty of storage in the back. Can pull a kayak trailer. It’s AWD. One of the top safety rated companies. It gets awesome mpg. It has 8”+ ground clearance. Oh and it’s less than $25k if you get the manual transmission. To me that is one hell of a vehicle.

All sorts of wrong here. The Crosstrek's interior isn't too bad considering I'm leasing an Impreza. The only thing I don't like is the cloth seats or what Subaru calls it "tricot" which I do agree on. Not really the softest material but it's alright. The rest of it is fine. I don't know why Roman is complaining about the interior when it just said on the "Top 10 Current Automotive Trends We Don't Dig," he doesn't dig push-button or dial transmission, complicated interiors/functions, etc. It's typical Roman, he's not a fan of Japanese. That's why I prefer Nathan when it comes to Japanese. At least he can do a better job. Message to Jeep: Why is the Crosstrek here? The Crosstrek competes with the Renegade. The Compass competes with the Forester. Not too mention the Tucson and Sportage will outrun this Compass in terms of everything. If Jeep had the balls get the Tucson and Sportage with AWD. They need to pull up their game. What a bad review and a bad selection. This is pathetic.

I'm glad someone else noticed the Crosstrek doesn't compete with the Compass but rather the Renegade. The Jeep Reengade competes with the Subaru XV Crosstrek. The Jeep Compass competes with the Subaru Forester. The Jeep Cherokee competes with the Subaru Outback. And the Jeep Grand Cherokee will likely compete against Subaru's next 7-passenger crossover (B9 Tribeca replacement). I feel like Jeep chose these cars to deliberately make the Compass Trailhawk look better. If they had brought a Forester or Forester XT in, it may possibly make the Compass Trailhawk seem not so good, considering the Forester is a close 2nd to the Compass Trailhawk's 1st in class off-road capability.

Oh, just like how Cadillac had the CTS which was between the size of a BMW 3-series and a BMW 5-series. Terrible idea IMO. Hell, Cadillac brought up the size of the CTS to a BMW 5-series so there is now direct competition instead of a vehicle that's too big in one size class but too small in another size class.

I'm not really sure how you can say the Jeep is the best offroad without actually testing it. For example, the Jeep has a ground clearance of 8.1 inches, while the Crosstrek is 8.7. The higher center of gravity could be an issue too. The Jeep's primary advantages are tire width and (I think) legit 4x4 instead of AWD. I don't understand why those Hyundai or Kia models were offered for testing. They don't even seem to be in the same class.

As a former owner of a Jeep Patriot (same as the Compass, just boxier body style), I can tell you the MAIN difference with the Jeep is all of those other cars will still be on the road years after the Jeep is crushed and buried in a junk yard. Buying a Jeep was the biggest automotive mistake I ever made.

Let me get this straight, the comparisons were the off-road edition of the Jeep Compass versus the baseline/black top versions of other vehicles that are not it's competition? The Crosstrek is compared to the Renegade so of course it will feel small versus the Compass. The comment about the Crosstrek being slow is not wrong but not right either. Who was driving it? I know it can get to 70 on an on-ramp just fine so unless your track was 1/16 mile then it is user error. Next, comparing front wheel editions versus AWD/4x4 editions is a pathetic marketing ploy. This whole video was pointless to anyone looking for actual comparisons by semi competent reviewers/journalists.

I have a 2016 tucson SE AWD. I wish it had about 10% more torque and a touch more ground clearance, but it handles very well and has proven quite worthy for being far less expensive than it's competitiors. I took my Tucson to Moab. No problems.

The main problem here is while some Jeeps "look" cool, they are unreliable and plagued with consumer complaints. I have a 2016 Wrangler and it has been at the dealer a total of 16 days during 2016. I still like it because of how capable and unique it is, but that's because its a JKU. I'd never buy a new Compass.

My Xj looks like crap but it has been on of the most reliable automobiles I have ever owned. When it needs to be repaired it is dirt cheap to do so and everybody can work on it. I am NEVER getting rid of it. I like the Compass, it even sounds good. Ya I would wait at least two years to see how reliable it is before ever considering one. Only having one engine is a good choice.

And why does the 2.4 engine suck? It has been reliable for me and I have heard of no reliability issues with this engine. As for the 9 speed, it shifts kind of jerky but the rumor that they are failing left and right is total malarkey. Nearly a million of these transmissions are on cars on the road and 99.9999% of them are driving with no issues.

pdgable well, firstly the 2.4 is slow, it's in a lot of fiat/Chrysler products, gets weak fuel mileage. I said nothing about these transmissions failing, although there have been complaints of the 9A failing, I personally think the combination is crap, why can't fiat or Chrysler produce a new turbo engine that's not the 1.4, and put it in this jeep? They need a 2.0T I think, and than maybe I'd consider buying one, because look at the Hyundai Tuscons 1.6T and 7 DCT, it's a great engine and trans combo, gets good fuel mileage and is pretty quick at sea level, but that's my opinion of course. I actually really like the exterior design of the compass, but the engine and transmission is a deal breaker.

I feel like Jeep deliberately left out the Subaru Forester to make the Jeep Compass look better, considering the Subaru Forester is the next-best off-road capable compact crossover. The Jeep Renegade is Jeep's subcompact crossover. The Jeep Compass is Jeep's compact crossover which competes with Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Subaru Forester, etc. Jeep gave them a terrible selection of "competitors" considering they all don't direct compete in the same class as the Compass.

It is too bad that Jeep didn't make this a very fair comparison. Also, not all of the cars tested where very close in price, and all of them didn't have an AWD setup. Every vehicle in this comparison almlst has a different mission and aren't the most direct competitors out there. With all that to the side, though, the Sportage and the Tucson are, by far, aiming to be more of the premium offerings in the class. While the Jeep Compass, and the Subaru Crosstrek both are more off road spirited. I agree with Roman when it comes to the interior styling of the Crosstrek it just seems almost "too" simple. Even though, some people may prefer that. Both the Kia and the Sportage, have that very simple yet sophisticated design to the interior. The Jeep Compass is a compact crossover. The Compass competes with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, and other compact crossovers. The Jeep Renegade is a subcompact crossover. The Renegade competes with the Honda HR-V, Chevrolet Trax, Subaru XV Crosstrek, Mazda CX-3, Nissan Juke, and other subcompact crossovers. The Cherokee is a mid-size crossover. This is where things get even more blurry as there are mid-size crossovers that are on the large side, and some on the smaller side as well as the differentiating factor of 2-row or 3-rows. I would believe the Cherokee competes with 2-row mid-size crossovers such as the the Subaru Outback.

With this fitting in-between the Renegade and Cherokee, I think the non-turbo Subaru Forester would have been a better comparison. (I know you tested what you had.) I have a Crosstrek, and down here in Ohio it has decent power delivery. 20 or 30 hp would be nice, though! The CVT in the Crosstrek actually has better reviews off-road than the manual option. ;)

Some of Subaru's vehicles equipped with the Lineartronic CVT have a manual mode that have 6, 7, and/or 8 preset "gears" (ratios) that simulate gears to improve control in situations such as passing, engine braking, etc. Otherwise, it works like any other CVT.

My wife has a Tuscon,sport 1.6,she did have Rouge(14'),I do not recommend,the nissan,she gets 25 to 30 mpg,she drives it like she stole it,the dual clutch trans needs some more programing to be perfect,but still a solid vehicle,I also afraid of the cost of CVT repair,long term jeep ownership for me would only be with a long term warranty.

JP 560 interior trim falling off and she had that huge sunroof that would never stop creaking even after 2 dealer visits and a discovery of rusty crossmember under the engine when changing oil ,I had a 98 Pathfinder that was unibody perfection for 11 years,I don't think they're headed in the right direction.

A very noteworthy point that you missed about the Jeep is there are THREE transmission options. There is a 6-speed manual available in North America as well. That alone would narrow my choices down to the Jeep or Subaru as I must have three pedals. After previous Hyundai experiences I would never invest in another Hyundai, and likewise Kia.

I don't understand all the hate on the Crosstrek, I firmly believe that it if one of the best cars you can buy right now. I live in an area of PA where I drive on roads that are more like goat paths on a daily basis and own a Crosstrek with the CVT. It rides just as nice an handles exactly the same on dirt as on pavement and even in a few inches of snow. It's got more than enough power for a daily driver and CVT gives me better milage than a lot of cars that couldn't make it on my roads anyway. If you really think you need a car with more power then consider this, I was a little disappointed in power when I first got it but you just have to learn to drive it. It's a momentum car, you learn to use the speed and power you already have rather than relying on the car to save you from a bad corner or wrong placement in the hill.

even though you guys can't obviously comment on reliability, the factory warranty can fill in for that, for example I think Kia offers 100k mile/10 years and jeep offers 36k miles/3 years warranties

Obviously an all wheel drive Kia Sportage still can't compare to a trailhawk trim for off roading, but Motor trend magazine said the Kia is one of the top off road vehicles in that catagory. As well as other youtube reviewers. So when he said the kia was his favorite to drive on road and other reviewers are saying its one of the better ones off road in AWD trim, it makes a strong arguement for the Kia

If the Subaru XV had a 200hp/ 200 ft-lb torque @ sub 2000 rpm, I'd walk in to the dealership today to buy one! I can overlook the CVT, the spartan interior, outdated infotainment in exchange for reasonable power in a compact package with great ride height and AWD.

Test drive the Forester XT. I had a Crosstrek for 30 months and now have a Limited Forester XT with EyeSight. 100 more HP makes a World of difference and the mpg penalty is pretty insignificant. It also has a much nicer interior than the XV.

Good luck with that Jeep. The last version Compass was rated by Forbes as one of the vehicle people most regret having ever bought. Jeep, Chrysler Fiat routinely have the worst reliability, resale and owner satisfaction of any car make. This is well documented by numerous publications. If the Crosstrek had another 40HP it would be an ideal vehicle. Hyundai and Kia have really uped their game well.

I bought the 2l tuscon. It has enough power even with awd. i keep my cars long term so i stayed away from turbo and i couldnt trust a 7 speed dual clutch. id gladly lose a couple mpg for long term durability.

That was super redundant of Jeep to have both the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage there. I agree with Roman, I would have picked different vehicles and they were also not comparably equipped to the Jeep. Not really a fair comparison. I guess when you're FCA and you make obviously subpar vehicles compared to the competition these are the tactics you have to resort to.

Actually the trail rated AWD Trailhawk model tested hear doesn't drive as well on street as the cheaper front driven Compass with it's street tires and lower suspension. Roman thinks is the Trailhawk version is a very good compromise . Do you really think Roman (The Fast Lane Car team) would allow Jeep to choose the specific of the concurrent models which will became part of the comparison? I don't understand how someone can became that biased and paranoid about a car brand? Really curious to find out about it! Did angry unfair perfidious Jeep hurt you feeling in some way? I just came back from Hawaii where my rental for two was a 2017 Compass. What a terrible vehicle. Fit and finish were subpar, engine was anemic and road nose was intrusive. At home I drive a 2013 Subaru Legacy 3.6r and 2016 Outback 3.6r. Though Subaru has gotten better with their interiors it was never their strong suit. When we got to the airport I got into my Legacy it felt like I was driving a Lexus and that's saying something. Not sure with all the great choices out there why anyone would buy a Compass. Being that TFL drives way more cars than I have I can't understand why they consider this an all around good vehicle, and thats my rant.

People need to stop comparing other jeeps to the wrangler. They are apples and oranges. More than half of customer complaints come from first time wrangler buyers that find that the wrangler is not a good on road vehicle. They can find this by test driving it and not being over taken by the looks. The interior leaks after you remove the roof, it handles poorly, if you cannot off- road drive, you may break something, etc. All things you learn from reading online. Other jeeps are not as capable and are more reliable. The wrangler is almost like it is made from another manufacturer than the others. A lot of the other complaints come from the reliable and cheap, but sluggish and uninteresting patriot/compass twins of old. These are also due to the lack of a test drive as 5 minutes and you would know that. Also the nine speed automatic, Jeep was one of the first to use and they had to work out software issues, which they fixed for no cost of the customer. There were no mechanical defects, only software issues. They should have worked them out first, but they were trying to be ahead of the game and they bit the bullet for it.

I sometimes find it funny that some of these reviews they act as if some of these vehicles don't have a manual transmission. I think the Subaru Crosstrek but was critiqued for what it's not than for what it is. Maybe it's just me but if someone is looking for power they would look elsewhere. The Compass fills their compact crossover gap. Think Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5, etc. The Renegade fills their subcompact crossover gap. Think Honda HR-V, Subaru XV Crosstrek, Mazda CX-3, etc The Cherokee fills their 2-row mid-size crossover gap. The Grand Cherokee fills their... well I'm a tad confused about that as well. I'm guessing it's the 3-row mid-size crossover category but I could be wrong.

I own a Subaru Outback and a Jeep Wrangler. I travel at least three weeks a month so I rent lots of cars. I've rented the Sportage and a Santa Fe. None of these cars, including the Jeep Compass,could keep up with a Wrangler off road.

I rented one last year in Las Vegas for a Road trip to Death Valley , I drove about 1100 miles in 4 days , most of it on dirt rods at death valley , on the drive back to Vegas the pice of crap Jeep had vibrations .., all over !!!
