I just picked Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring over Lexus NX and Mercedes GLA. I personally don't think Mercedes or Lexus have anything better to offer than a Mazda. I don't care about the badge or name, all I care is driving and enjoying from driving, and Mazda does deliver just that! Way to go Mazda! Keep it up!

Daniel Sobirov I luv this review, I had my heart set on a lexus nx200t and all of a sudden I saw this car with the same body as the lexus and it's a mazda, I have never owned a mazda a really never found their cars appealing but this Mazda is awesome the more reviews I see the more I want it, the top of the line that is, why not to me it's more bang for my money and seems to be more safe.

I really appreciate Mazda's commitment in making a real driver's car. Cudo's to them too for lining up cars way more expensive and premium to showcase this. I like their honesty and integrity, something you do not find so much with other makers these days.

I do think there is a space between regular SUV and premium SUV and I think mazda does the job perfectly. I had several "premium" cars before (Volvo XC90 fully loaded, 2009 BMW x5 V8, BMW X1 2013, Mini CountrymanS, BMW X1 2015, BMW X1 2017...) and I must say... the only one I truly enjoy driving is my CX5 GT tech 2016. I do think my next car will be another CX5... maybe I will wait for the HCCI engine or an HCCI hybrid.

I think Mazda is making some of the best SUV's in the class right now if your value equation is an equal combination of driving dynamics, good looks inside/out, and general utility. And if you don't think people cross shop luxury brands, I bought my wife a Mazda CX-9(the new one) after looking at every 3 row SUV in the 45-55K range, that included some of the luxury brands in the Acura MDX and a Volvo XC90. To me the interior on the Mazda is more pleasant to the eye than anything other than the XC90(and maybe the Audi Q7...but I couldn't look at a wagon, didn't fit our style). BMW doesn't even offer a 3 row so the X5 was out and you have to enter a different price stratosphere range to get a 3 row Mercedes. At 42K out the door on a Signature model CX-9, it is difficult to see the added value of the Acura brand at all. The XC90 was really tempting but if you really want the looks and any reasonable amount of modern tech you have to tack on another 10K and you are looking much closer to 60K than you are 50K (let alone 42K). The thing is I can afford that, but I'm not stupid and I'm not just going to throw away 15K and not feel like I got 15K worth in return. If you have a lot more money than me and an extra 15K is a drop in the buck then hey...grab that XC90 loaded up. It is a gorgeous suv with a great interior and great use of space..You can certainly nick pick items on all vehicles. I nitpick the CX-9 for not offer a heated steering wheel in the US (odd because its offered on CX9's in Canada and elsewhere in the world ?) and the seat height adjustment isn't independently adjustable front and back, but then I can easily nitpick the "luxury" brands for not having the amazing Head Up display the Mazda has(Volvo has it in an option package). In fact, after being spoiled with this thing I would find it difficult to go to a new vehicle that doesn't have it. The wealth of info the heads up display gives is simply fantastic...navigation, blight spot, speed limit. You never have to take your eye off the road. My point is you can nick pick the things the Mazda doesn't have and you could say its not premium for that reason, but then I could say "the Mazda comes with X standard so your premium brand isn't premium". It use to be "premium" has nicer designs inside/out. It use to be premium had the better interiors. It use to be premium offered more amenities you couldn't live without. Those virtues have trickled into these most recent Mazdas. About the only vehicle that really felt "premium" in a meaningful way more than the Mazda was the Volvo if you opted for the Inscription version and added some of the nicer options like the Heads Up Display, but again you were looking at spending an extra 15K. I think for 15K I got a heated steering wheel more cargo volume, but we only fill the SUV to its max once a year and when we do that we tow a 4x6 utility trailer because none of the SUVs are big enough so the extra volume is slightly moot. At any rate, to each their own. I often just think the "Luxury" brands have the average consumer tricked into thinking they are getting more "luxury". I would agree in some cases you do, but no in the "luxury" brand offerings in the 40-50K range.

Really interesting video. We just bought the BMW X1 25i (AWD). We tried to keep and open mind and make the most objective choice possible. Drove the equivalent Lexus NX, Audi Q3, Mercedes GLA, Mazda CX-5 and the x1. We also drove the Kia and Hyundai which are constantly getting better and better IMO, but obviously still not up to the level of the other price categories. We came to similar conclusion on the stop start of the Benz, I just found it so clunky to drive and even the instruments and controls just don't feel practical. Have to say in the end it was a toss up between the Mazda CX5 and justifying the higher price of the BMW X1 which we liked best from a driving performance (predominantly power) and admittedly from a styling point of view (just slightly). Having said this there is a massive price gap. Weaker engine aside, i think the all round quality and driver comfort of the Mazda is great and I think some of the European premium brands really need to lift their game before they get over taken.

"premium" nowadays stands only for the price ...it doesn't mean it is more reliable, more equipped, faster, more comfortable, better designed, higher quality interior, exterior... it only guarantees it is more expensive. It is a word everyone (especially journalists) should just stop using.

I hope Mazda plonks the turbocharged engine from CX-9 onto CX5 and the Mazda 3. The engine fits the engine bay of both. Dont get why they are not doing it. The 2.4 NA engine is great but as roman put it once the turbo kicks in and pushes u back to the seat the feeling is something special. You also get good fuel efficiency with turbos.

@AngelManuelPerez 7 жыл бұрын
The turbo would need to be reconfigured for the CX-5 because of the way it works on the CX-9. On the CX-9 all the turbo grunt is way early on the power band because they want the SUV moving faster at first and then cruise. I'd imagine the CX-5 would need the turbo somewhere in between 4.5-7k RPM.

Where did you get that from??? The peak torque band on turbos should alway be low, around 3000rpms. The HP will kick in above that. These are both heavy cars.

You're missing the point, Roman. Mazda didn't bring the premium comparison cars because they expect to compete with them in the market, they brought them so that the journalists can tell people how favorably the new CX-5 compares with them, and the people that are in the small, affordable CUV market will feel like the CX-5 is THE bargain of it's class. Every other review I've read that's based on this comparison event has understood this and has nothing but praise for how well the Mazda did in such "esteemed" company. It's beyond me how you got so many subscribers, I've watched several of your reviews and you're really just not very good at it. No offense.

Truth be told, Hyundai has won a few comparos in this segment and will likely continue to do so.

I totally get what Mazda is doing here. By presenting this comparison with the premium brands they are not really expecting that people will cross-shop them per se. By showing that it compares favorably to these cars, what Mazda is really saying is that why would you by a boring ass Rav-4, CRV, etc. with their appliance like driving characteristics and their soulless design when you can get this car. That way when all of these guy do their later reviews they will be thinking about how it's a great car that is just not quite the peer of the BMW etc. By default it puts it at the front of the pack in its actual segment. It's kind of a risky strategy but could payoff. As a current BMW driver looking to replace my wife's kid-hauler with a small ute we actually are cross-shopping the CX-5 and the X1. Of course we go into that knowing that they are not "competitors" per se but if I can get 85-90% of the BMW X1 experience for $10k less then that is a very interesting proposition.

As a real world owner of a new CX-5, I literally laugh at people who claim that the vehicle is underpowered!!! When I pull off from stop lights I'm literally 4 or 5 car lengths away from everyone quickly without mashing the accelerator in regular mode. If I hit sport mode it's obviously not even fair. In the corners, forget about it. The Mazda is basically flawless for someone like myself with actual technical driving skills learned during years of motorcycle riding. No it's not for everyone, but there is a reason that those who actually OWN Mazdas love them so much. This now being my third Mazda, I can say that the value, fun, quality, and overall big picture of what the CX-5 is comes out to be a very, very, very competitive vehicle even in luxury circles. I'm less than 3 weeks into ownership, but I've got 3,500 miles on my cx5. I literally cannot stop driving it and it's an amazing feeling!! Test drive one immediately, I suggest the GT level. You will probably buy it...lol

I didn't do a comparison between the CX-5 and the luxury cars but I did test drive a 2017 model yesterday. My son and I both agreed that it felt like it was a class up from what it cost. The interior detailing and seat comfort were top notch... and I drove a Touring without the leather. It still seemed a bit loud, louder than the Mazda6 I also tested, but the ride was outstanding. We were on some pretty bad Michigan roads and it never felt loud or crashy in the least. I would have liked to hear the reviewers here talk about ride and handling more... I know the Mazda is down on power, but how did they feel the comfort and ride compared to the highline brands? I think it really shines there. Also the Mazda seemed to have a lot of practical touches. The 40/20/40 rear seats, for example, are a really nice touch if you carry a couple of kids and skis as I do. And that soul red paint... so worth the extra few hundred dollars.

Yeah but in all fairness the paint on that Mazda test car is a $595 option; a color specifically designed to make that car look good. Almost all the marketing pictures of that car are in that specific color. Most of the premium cars have specialty paint options too. Obviously Mazda designed this test for a reason, and they are not in the business of making the premium cars look better.

We just bought a 2022 Lexus NX for approximately $55k. Also had a 2019 cx5 grand touring approximately $40k. Apart from some softer dash features, prefer the Mazda by miles. Easier to drive, looks cleaner, software is intuitive, fewer buttons, yet easier to access controls. The Lexus feels heavy. It does have lane centering, but it is twitchy. The memory system on the Mazda is a huge plus too.

As a recent car shopper, i test drove the Mazda CX5, GLA250, BMW X1, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Lexus NX, and Audi Q3 and i bought a fully loaded X1, becase at the end of the day, none of those cars drove better than the BMW. Also the seats were better, the infotainment system had a higher resolution and the car just had a better driving feel and steering wheel response. Definitly looking into getting a M3/5 as a car for fun. Nothing against the Mazda, but the driving was not fun and the car felt slow. I also think they NEED to update their infotainment system and gauges and improve the leather in the car. I also did not find a panoramic sunroof, and the car itself just was not as good looking (especially the headlights, love the angel eyes). I'm not bias as this is my first BMW, but just enjoyed the car the most. My budget was 55k.

I think Mazda is on a good way to become premium, in case of design they have already reached it. They need more horses to attract premium custumers, but that needs more invesment, much more investment.

I'll wait and see for myself how much, if at all, Mazda automobiles are inching towards that premium car experience. When I sat in the 2016 CX-9 GT, the driver seat configurations were limited. Not acceptable. In the 2016 Mazda 6, the motor in the driver seat was very loud. But I applaud them for trying. Many of the so-called premium cars charge extra for options that are available on some compact cars (e.g., LED lights). I think that it's reasonable to expect a premium brand to have all options available on lesser brands standard on their cars. Further, many of the so-called premium brands just can't manufacture cars that are reliable, according to Consumerreports.org. What is so premium about that? It's like going to a 5-star hotel where the toilets don't flush all the time, or the elevators are frequently out of service. Hopefully, with time, the arrival of new brands in the premium segment will be a win-win for customers who want a true premium car experience - the existing ones will be forced to get better while keeping cost reasonable, or the new ones will give customers what they truly deserve.

Mazda needs to work on interior room, and a better powerplant. Recently test drove a CX-9 and CX-5 and both felt good to drive(Handling and interior appointments). But felt cramped in the cab compared to the competition. Especially CX-9 for it's size.

Well the big test for the CX5 will be the head-to-head with the VW Tiguan, if Mazda are intending to target a more premium market...that car could be its main rival. Kia has also produced a car that is going for the same space with the Sportage, it'll be interesting to see how close these cars are in a comparison.

I usually love your videos, but this one missed the mark. I don't think you really got what the comparison was about. Mazda wasn't saying, buy this instead of the others. If someone wants a BMW, they'll but one. Mazda's saying, you don't have to spend$35 grand+, we've got a great vehicle for less. And the musical stings in the video were the mist annoying, ever.

Well to be honest the CX-5 2.5l might feel fast but not actually fast even if the rev says it's 4.5k. I drove CR-V with 2.0 NA VTec couple years ago, it revved and made noise, but actually when I check the speedometer it is slower than a 2.0l diesel. I wish Mazda can get a proper 1.6-2.0l turbo petrol engine from Toyota or Nissan with 200-220hp and 300-350 Nm. Torque is much more important than hp in real world driving and in many times the turbo lag is so minimal. Those German cars tend to have double throttle respond, one is to get into 1500-2000 rpm and the second is 2000-redline, particularly if the selector is in D/economy simply because turbo engine doesn't need to go higher than 1500 rpm for daily driving. Place the gear to sport or manual, the rev will be more linear for the first throttle respond will go as high as 3000-3500 rpm.

In the USA I think you only get the large petrol engine version, I recently had then CX5 with a 2 ltr petrol. Superb build quality, inside very nice but simply the worst ride on any car I’ve ever owned. A very bouncy ride every bump had it rolling rather than just absorbing the bump. Sold it after three months 6,000 miles for a diesel X1. Second big issue for me was the economy 2 litre petrol 36 mpg and even on a run could not get over 40, added to gutless response in 5/6th gear unless doing 70 just had to get rid of

Took a test drive in the CX-5. On paper it looks like a great car for the price and sitting in it confirms that. Driving it, however, bears out the numbers (torque to weight, HP to weight) that the car is a dog when accelerating. I pulled out of a parking lot in to traffic and the CX-5 just doesn't go. There's no "Zoom Zoom" to it. Sure the Q5 and X1 have turbo lag but before the turbo kicks in they have as much power as the CX-5, then the turbo spools up and they just blow the CX-5 away. I mean the CX-5 was so doggy I thought it unsafe. I'm waiting to see if the 2018 MY will add like 30 to 50hp to make it actually drivable.

the GLA has a dual-clutch transmission that is why it feels punchy-er than the q3. I think it is important to mention the transmission type as that has a big effect on how connected you feel to the car and the road. I stopped caring about the viscous transmissions after I test drove a mustang a few years ago, it feels like you have 30% less power than the manual (or an equivalent spec-ed dual-clutch).

That's right if someone needs a badge will go for a badge but if someone has a stronger sense for the automobile reality will go for the CX5 perhaps after the Lexus since the Lexus got the big surplus of the reliability and the greatest technological advance. The rest of them just cost more and they only by that trying hard to make you believe that they are...premium.
