Gianluca Palego My brother is 6'3" also and I,m 6,1 we both own ND MX's and have no problems the other comparison they fail to do is purchase price and running costs Boxster is £42000 basic model the MX is £18850 for the basic model, start getting all the extras and the Porsche is rather pricey ( as if it's not already) In the UK BBR tuning will take the 2.0 ltr model £23000 and for £8000 you get a car with a limited top speed of 155mph 0-60 5.0 and a totally updated handling and brake package . Personally I'm happy as is with the 1.5 Icon limited edition I have, £21000 , as it suits our Suffolk twisty lanes but has the little extras like heated leather seats reversing sensors etc . As for running costs I get around 43 average mpg ( imperial gallons = 1.2 US) on a free way at 70 mph I get 55mpg which imho is superb for a roadster. Boxster? looked it up mid 20's. 30's on a run . as for maintenance costs mmmmm flat four mid engine ! pricey.

Be carefull of the softop on the Boxster!!!!!! The plastic window part doesn't fold neatly most of the time and you should run your hand across it halfway to make sure it does. If you don't do this the window will get premature leaks from bad folds

@@beanvo9924 well for starters, I value nostalgia, and that can mean something different to everyone you talk to. I was about 11 years old when I first saw a 986 Boxster back in '00. It ended a decade long passion that I had for dinosaurs at the time and turned me into a diehard car guy overnight. Nostalgia aside, I value the way a car makes me feel. High rpm induction song from the boxer 6 directly next to your ears will make the hair on your neck stand up and may have you forgetting the better performing miata.

Carlitox b looked at the Mazda and a cayman 2 years ago, bought the cayman. Just sold it to buy a RF. Mainly due to £7k in repair/tyre costs, comfort improvement, and reduced paranoia whenever I park it anywhere

I love Boxsters, but that 986 model is known for having IMS bearing and rear main seal issues. Can't deny how great it sounds and drives, though. I own a Club RF, same color as the one in the video. Steering is razor-precise, but being electric, it doesn't have the steering feel of that Boxster.

IMS bearing failure about 1-2%

IMS is mainly an issue on 2001+ models with the single row IMS bearing, but it can be replaced with a more reliable bearing for peace of mind. Seepage from the RMS isn’t really a big deal generally, though it can be replaced together with the clutch without much additional cost. For the cost of one new MX-5, one could buy three used 986 Boxsters, and install new clutches, IMS bearings, and rear main seals in all three. The flat six is also smoother, more powerful, and better sounding than the four banger in the Miata.

If that Boxster engine (which has been known to grenade) let's go, it's $12,500 to have a re manufactured motor put in. Not to mention RMS leaks and repairs. Maintenance on a fleet of 4 Mazdas will be cheaper than the Porsche.

This 986 is a 1999 which has the more durable double bearing and the failure rate is pretty low on those. Later on Porsche went to a single IMS bearing and that had up to a 10% failure rate. Also, if the engine does have trouble for about $8,000 you can get a rebuilt 996 engine with an updated IMS bearing. The 996 3.4-liter engine is a pretty easy swap for the 1999 Boxster and adds about 100 horsepower. Of course the $8,000 is just the price of the engine if you do all the work yourself (something I'm looking into doing myself).

This is a way difficult decision I'm facing now-ish, kinda. Trunk space vs maintenance cost (I live in a high rise and have no garage); cost to fix up operate and insure vs depreciation losses; joy to drive vs tiny car danger and being a douche-target; 33k vs $10k. Cayman S vs Boxster S.

Morgan three wheeler beats the crap out of both these as fun to drive . But it is over priced and got a junk power plant that over heats in traffic. The Porche is great but way over priced like the Morgan. The MX5 offers great fun at a sensible price. Hence I own one and a million others have in the last 30 years.

The price from the Boxster would be nearly made up in repair and maintenance cost. No matter how reliable, when a car is nearing 20 years old their will be many repairs in it's future. Passed the cost, I choose the MX-5 RF because of it's looks

2 year old reply, but no the Boxster is very reliable there is really nothing to it. It’s all basic, mostly non electronic components. If you can change oil you can maintain a Boxster... Everything on is easily reached if you need to.
