Great video man. Pretty sure the cover bolts are not all the same size( almost positive) FYI. I number then with Sharpie just in case. Did you happen you have a ground wire going to one of the cover bolts on the top left side as it states in the manual? Mine doesn't and I don't see one on yours. Just wondering if they used a generic pic from another year or model?? My concern is that it's supposed to be there and isn't due to the previous owner. Anyway after watching this (I have same issue) I think rubber, dirt, grease, etc slowly impacts into the cracks and crevices while spinning and it slowly spreads apart increasing interior tolerances just enough for one or more rollers to slip out then all hell breaks loose. I have a 2020 TRV 500 and the clutch and belt exploded. The vent tube for the air intake for the clutch was touching the inside of the breather box causing an air restriction and everything overheated

There are 2 cover bolts top left on the 2012 model at a that are longer

Just, change the belt on my 2018 alterra 500 after 1800 milles. Seems like this model is hard on belts? I was wondering if the belt you changed in the video is still holding up?

I ended up selling it shortly after.. the piston rings were gone and it started smoking/burning oil really bad. I would recommend selling it and buying a Yamaha or Honda.. Alterra is not the same quality as the older arctic cats unfortunately

@@supertrucker2077 totally agree! I almost had to give it away. That thing was nothing but trouble. I would never buy another Arctic Cat product

Mine keeps shredding belts and all 8 of my rollers were flat spotted like that. I replaced all eight and new belt and drove maybe 7 or 8 miles and shredded belt again and destroyed the rollers again

I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble with your atv. Honestly I got rid of my Alterra not long after this video. The engine started burning oil badly and needed a rebuild. I don’t think Alterra has the same build quality as the older Arctic Cat atvs. I’m not buying another Alterra again that’s for sure! Thanks for checking out my channel and good luck with your atv..

My 2018 500 did the same thing except all 8 roller were melted almost in half

Samething happen to mine. Belt completly destroyed, even the clutch cover gasket is dry.

All those parts should be shiny and clean. It looks like you got you clutch swamped and that caused the belt issues and flat roller. If your bushings are worn, damn. I have a 17 700 and I put over 1000kms per year on it. Zero issues and I ride in mud, water, dusty fire and logging roads. What are you riding in?

Thanks for checking out our video! My son rides in everything you can imagine, and tows heavy trailers full of rocks or logs.. he also plowed all last winter with it... it’s had a pretty hard life... I’m so frustrated I can’t get the parts until sometime next August they’re saying.. but whatever.. I can’t control it.. I’ll do another video once I get the parts and we’ll see what happens..

I've h ad the same problem. Fixed by changing the two rear pulley plates (the one you widen to put the belt on).

I just replaced the belt and the primary clutch rollers and cleaned everything really good. So far so good.. it’s been around 100 miles or so... I’ll do another video if it shreds the belt again... good to know another issue though 🙄...

I had this same problem. New belt, new rollers. Same thing just happened again, about 35 miles later... What do you recommend? Did you have success replacing rear pulley plates?

@@josephdursteler26 A few days ago after 5000 miles I had the same problem, worn belt replaced after 50 miles again the destroyed belt. I disassembled the secondary variator (the one I had replaced) and I noticed that there are some bushings (I believe in Bakelite) one of which was missing. The problem is that I couldn't find the parts, so a friend of mine rebuilt them in synthesized bronze. so far I have done more or less 300 miles and have not had any problems.

What belt do you recommend my just went out it’s missing so many teeth I have a alterra 500 4x4 as well I didn’t think the OEM ones would cost 180$ like what but ya what do you recommend

I bought our belt from babbit’s online.. it was about $180 but it fit perfectly and works great.. crazy expensive I know 🙄

How did you get the main bolt off, since the whole thing spins?

Impact wrench and a 1 1/16 socket. or buy a clutch holder.

I would guess it's the buildup of the dust inside that gets caked up. That's what looks like caused ours to fail.

It only had about 1,100 miles on it.. new rollers and belt, cleaned it up and had no other issues with the clutch.. however a few months later the engine started smoking really bad and it was using a ton of oil.. I sold it.. I can’t believe such a new atv would burn the rings that fast... very disappointed with Alterra..

I haven’t been able to get the parts yet.. not happy about it but I’m assuming it’s because of the pandemic.. I’ve tried my dealer, Amazon, eBay, etc.. no luck yet. I have the parts on order, but it literally could be months before we get the rollers and some other parts (bushings etc)... I do have a new belt for it now but without the rollers I can’t get it together

I’m not sure.. I’ve always ordered my parts from Babbit’s online.. you can look up your machine and they’ll have the parts diagrams/numbers for you. I’ve always had good experiences with them..

Same... I had my belt torn and replaced it without checking the rollers. I probably should of checked the rollers... question! Did you ever get reduced speed prior to the belt shredding? Let me know if you ever got the Alterra up and going!

Hey thanks for checking out my channel! I did get the Alterra going. New clutch rollers, belt, cleaned everything inside and it goes perfectly. My son says he noticed a little loss in low end torque and says top speed was reduced as well.. We actually replaced all the suspension bushings and got it back to pretty much perfect running condition and we just sold it yesterday. Jacob wants a new Honda crf 250f dirt bike.. he’s still saving but he’s getting closer 😎

I got an Alterra 500 that I’ve had clutch issues with where it just burns through belts like no tomorrow but I just got it back from a mechanic and now the clutch gets really hot to the point where it starts to smoke. I’ve changed the coolant and cleaned the rad and made sure non of the air intakes for the clutch are blocked do you think the rollers would have anything to do with it.

I have a 2020 Alterra TRV. The air intake for the clutch was restricted inside the breather box. The pipe was touching the cover. Check it out. Might be your issue as well.
