What’s it like driving a manual off road? I’ve always had manual cars but never anything with 4.10 gears and off road.
@Quinn18t6 жыл бұрын
Zack, if you were roasting the clutch over obstacles, you need to shift down to 4-low. In 4-low, you wouldn't have to slip the clutch at all, especially in a Rubicon with its excellent gear ratios.
@jomaha92276 жыл бұрын
Same with Tacoma Off-Road 6spd .. if you put it in 4-Lo it just creeps up over practically anything, and then has amazing engine braking when going downhill. I can coast down really steep inclines in 4-Lo without touching the brake or gas and it just creeps down the hill. That's REAL crawl control! Manual is much better at going up/down inclines than automatic, the engine braking makes it much easier to control with a manual.
@zackklapman35696 жыл бұрын
True. The steepness of the road (or lack of steepness) didn't seem to warrant 4-low. In my past off-roading/snow driving, I only used 4-low for very steep obstacles, or icy conditions. But I should probably use it more often, for rocks such as those.
@jomaha92276 жыл бұрын
@@zackklapman3569 In the future any time you want to creep up an obstacle, or a steep incline, always use 4-lo. It will allow you to normally go maybe 2k rpm higher for the same speed in 1st gear, which really helps keep the powerband in the sweet spot when moving
@73encasedmetal6 жыл бұрын
Per your questions in the video: 4Lo and first gear all but eliminate the need to slip the clutch more than a moderate amount. It's like a hill start with ass loads of rear gear ratio. The rubicon has a different transfer case with steeper crawl ratio, steel rocker guards, and front and rear electric differential lockers. As for the choice between 2 door and 4 door models, the 4 door models with their extended wheelbase offer more capability with abrupt steep ascents than what the 2 door is capable of. In rock crawling this is essential. The tradeoff is that the brake over angle is less than the 2 door, but that's what skid plates are for.

4lo makes driving manual off road a breeze and really fun. You can always go to a higher gear for more speed, but in 4lo you can let the clutch out in first and creep with no gas. Getting started on an uphill or on a rock you get used to where the balance point is -- not a ton of slipping required-- and on downhill the gearing works better than any hill decent control. I love manuals in everything and off road is no exception.

All the wranglers have 4low, I think you were confusing that with the low range gear ratios. The other wranglers (non Rubicon) have around a 2.7:1 gear reduction in low range. The Rubicons are geared much lower in the transfer case at a 4:1 low range, this is one of the main selling points of the Rubicon. Also the 'electric limited slip diffs' you mention are actually fully locking diffs. As far as some tips for offroading and not burning your clutch. You shouldn't be using your clutch much, or slipping it, at all climbing rocks. This is where the big advantage of gearing comes into play. Put it into 4low and take full advantage of that 4:1 low range and 4.10 diffs, put it in first and let the clutch out. You can left foot brake to help control speed and ignore the clutch for the most part. The computer and gearing will help pull it up over obstacles, and if you get to a point where you think it's going to stall climbing over a big rock, your better off letting it stall out (if it does, you'd be surprised how hard it is in 4low). It's much safer to let it stall and bump it over the obstacles with the starter (hence why you can start them in gear with clutch pedal out in 4 low)
@nomadben6 жыл бұрын

Here's the trick to driving a manual on rocks: don’t use the clutch. You use 4 Lo, and if the engine stalls, great. Keep your foot off the clutch, and hit the starter. It will walk you right over the obstacle and restart your engine in the process. And for those of you who may think that’s too hard on the starter: nope. Jeep uses a heavy duty starter that is made for just such a purpose.

I think some manual practice with the jeep and some time to get the feel will help you with the clutch burning. I only have a sport JL and even on the Rubicon I only had one spot where I smelled the clutch. The 5.13 first gear helps a lot. I think manual trans sport owners that re gear will have no issue with the clutch for 90% of the off road obstacles they come across. My first jeep was a 2 door Rubicon JK and it was fine for the GF and I but we were fully loaded on long camping trips. With the dog now it made sense to get a 4 door, so that’s what I did for my JL!

I have an older Wrangler TJ but the principle is the same for crawling over obstacles; you idle up an over while in 1st gear, low range, 4WD. Feather the throttle as you roll up and over the obstacle not the clutch, and the engine won't stall, most times :-). Also, being in the right gear means not having to slip the clutch at all. Crawling over rocks, and I don't mean the bowling ball size rocks, is not about speed, it's about going up and over in one smooth(ish) movement. It takes a little practice with the throttle but not really hard to master. If you can't make it over the first few attempts, engage the rear locker and try again. If you Still can't get over then engage the front locker too. Every time you engage a locker, you'll be amazed at the difference they make. They make you look like you know what you're doing! lol

The way to keep from frying the clutch is very simple: just don’t use it. In 4 lo, the gas pedal is practically a brake, and if for whatever reason you want to stop hard, use the (actual) brakes and just stall the engine. Ready to make forward progress but you’re on an incline? Turn the starter. NO CLUTCH PEDAL! Jeep starters are made for this, and you will not burn yours out. All of this assumes, by the way, that you’ve disabled your starter interlock (the one that requires depressing the clutch pedal to start the vehicle.)

Hello Zack, I just bought a 2 door manual transmission Rubicon and I need to ask you something: When I shift from 1st to 2nd, at the very moment that the clutch is "grabbing the gear" I hear a clank noise coming apparently from the transmission, I have to take the clutch really slow to avoid this clank (this slows the speed), I also like to add that I read on the manual the following: "NOTE: A certain amount of noise from the transmission is normal. This noise can be most notice- able when the vehicle is idling in NEUTRAL with the clutch engaged (clutch pedal released), but it may also be heard when driving. The noise may also be more noticeable when the trans- mission is warm. This noise is normal and is not an indication of a problem with your clutch or transmission." Upon your experience is this clank really normal ?, thank you in advance...

To put this into perspective years ago we did a test with a older manual wrangler that had a remote start with no neutral safety. The wrangler was parked in front of a 25 degree hill in first gear hit the remote start and it drove itself right up the hill no clutching or stalling would have kept going if the person onboard didn't cut it off.

No offense but all these bells and whistles from the '11 - '17 JK to these new JL's are not for a Jeep at least not any one I would ever own. I have an '08 JK X 2 door. Went with the Best Top NX Glide plain black and Not the premium black twill. I saw it on many Jeeps and it looked off, actually made the jeep look weak. Again these are utilitarian, not luxury vehicles. Btw, hard tops scream soccer mom, and the 4 door hard tops, well are absolutely brutal rolling tampons. My base model X is rugged, 3.73 gears w/LS, 33" Duratracs, 2.5" Old man emu lift with a bunch of suspension upgrades that have this Jeep running great on and off road with 132k miles. This will be my last Jeep God willing. I built it exactly how I envisioned it. Jeep On! 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Why does that thing have a check engine light already

Key was in ignition, engine off. Pretty sure almost every car ever lights up all the dash lights before you turn it on.

No race track footage? Since that’s what all Wrangler owners do, go to the track and set lap records. Also, you (Matt) forgot to take the Genesis G70 off road. What is this, I thought your were the professional.

47k is way too much. If it’s just for off road get a 4000$ used keep and put 20K into it save about 25K.
