@ Vinnie DiMartino I was a little shocked by this video, and agree that it is unsafe. It prompted me to have my wife try this on our new 2019 Chrysler Pacifica. I had her start the van, put it in neutral (while pressing the brake), and then press the start/stop button. The engine turned off, the vehicle went into accessory mode, and then the system shifted itself to park (it has that stupid dial shifter, not a physical linkage/stalk).

Agree to the fullest. Just bought a 2018 wrangler,to avoid the ess I got the k. Model instead of the L model to avoid ess. System. Also they have a second battery tucked away under everything else to run the system. Now you have to disconnect two batteries to kill power for safety concerns. Good luck Vinnie!!.....

Love my push button start. I have it on my 2014 Ram 3500 Limited. Don't ever want a key again. They don't want you to turn the vehicle off and not have it in park for safety reasons. I will. Try mine out tomorrow and let you know what I find. When the vehicle not running you will quickly lose hydroboost after a few break pressings. No power steering etc.
@JohnDiMartino6 жыл бұрын
Push button start is actually illegal it just hasn’t been challenged . The park safety interlock system that’s required cannot work with push button start . The law requires the vehicle to be in park before you can leave with the keys ... You can leave with the Fob without it being in park. I think that’s why the Ram won’t let you shut it off in N, which is rediculous. Why did they use a single push button why not a rotary switch with off/on/start . You are at the complete mercy of the PCM with a push button start all in one . There should always be a way to instantly shut off any vehicle for safety reasons .

When we bought my wife's dodge journey back in 2011 I hated the push start. I had many concerns with it but 7 years later and 150,000 miles later, it's not give us a bit of trouble. The fob has gone dead a few times but if you push the start button with the fob it will still start up even if it's dead. It's the exact same setup that is in this 2018 truck in the the video

I can tell you from a FF perspective its not nice sometimes one of the first things you do at an accident is reach in and turn the key off. It wont always be in park and the other thing is you have to find the key fob and move it far enough away for a vehicle to shut off if its within 25 feet it will still run the vehicle. I know that doesn't go for all vehicles but its still a concern.

I’m sure there is a way to override the parking sensor for the ignition so that you can shut it down any time you want. It may be as easy as just grounding out the sensor so it thinks it’s in park all the time, as far as the ignition goes. Where there is a will there is a way my friend. Having push button ignition is actually quite convenient and nice feature to have. The longer you have it, the more you will see how it’s so much more convenient and great option. Good luck to ya my friend.

Last year I had a floor mat get stuck on top of my accelerator pedal and the truck screamed down the road... I had no clue wtf was happening and I flipped in neutral which stopped the acceleration and I coasted to the side of the road but the engine racing sound was crazy! I turned engine off and was able to climb out and see the heavy rubber weather tech floor mat had somehow gotten pulled up and was on top of the accelerator. You are spot on brother! That engine needs to turn off as soon as you tell it to with one simple motion!

Totally agree Vin! Haven’t liked them from the beginning. Idk why anyone ever thought turning a key was a problem in the first place lol. But now you can’t turn it off like you said, have no control over the starter or the power going to the fuel pump, etc. Same goes for these silly ass rotary knobs for as a gear shift... cause moving a lever became too complicated or difficult to do?? Lol And also not a big fan of everything going to touch screens (especially in some where the HVAC controls are part of the screen too instead of having actual knobs or buttons. Like yeah a giant fancy screen high in the “oooo ahhhh” factor (remember the digital dash craze in the 80s? Haha) and are nice in some ways, but there is no tactile feel to what you are doing. I don’t want to try to go through 4 menus just to turn the heater from floor to defrost if it starts to ice over on a cold day. And have to take eyes off the road to do so bc you cant go by feel with a touchscreen. Idk, seems silly to me, and a possible safety hazard as well

Does the Ram's steering column lock when you push the button to turn it off? The reason I ask is I just had Nissan replace the steering column lock under a factory re-call on my son's 2009 Altima. He got in it to come home from work and it wouldn't start (column was locked) because the little motor/gears had failed in the box under the dash. Since it was attached to the steering column and failed in the off/locked position the car wouldn't start. Maybe this is the reason it doesn't shut off when not in park? Might be a little problem if your steering column locks while you're driving down the road...

@biglo98896 жыл бұрын
SouthJerseySound can you explain why those Vehicles were burnt and push button at the same time are they related to that?
@southjerseysound73406 жыл бұрын
Arlie Hopes y most of the burned wrecks have been push button. While I can't say for sure my opinion is that people panic in the accident and don't shut the car off. If they're OK they usually leave with the key fob but the car still runs and the fuel pump is on even if the car stalled. In the cases where they're incapacitated in some way its the same, bystanders have trouble killing the ignition to cut power. Also sometimes they stall yet the ignition doesn't get shut off and so on. Before the fire/rescue would only cut the battery cables if they thought there was a risk of fire or they had to extricate the people. But in the last few years they're cutting almost all battery cables on cars that aren't drivable and do so first thing. There's a lot to it and other things may cause it. But I've been looking into it recently and I feel that with a keyless ignition the chances are greater in a accident that the ignition is left on. When the ignition is left on then the fuel pump continues to run and after a wreck there's a good chance for a fuel leak. Before the first thing anyone did was turn the key off. But now it's almost impossible for a bystander to turn the cars off.

Not a fan of this set up either! But ok I just wanted to take the time, and say I’m a huge fan of yours. I was in high school when American chopper came out. I watched religiously, honestly you were a huge inspiration to me growing up! Your a huge reason I wanted to be a mechanic I mean you were the guy who had his head down at the lift just getting it done and you could fix stuff make it run you weren’t just cutting steel and gluing to the bike you were the guy! Anyway I recently have started back at episode 1 showing my kids this show, there 7 and 9 and think it’s pretty rad. But what i have always wondered the show made it seem like the reason you left was that you had just been pushed too thin you were the guy always doing the work. But was there more to it? Was there any bitterness with JR or SR.? Anyway sorry for the novel! But I looked up to you a lot as a teenager and I still do! It’s sad not seeing you on tv now but I’m happy for you! Service and Auto repair and owning your own shop beats the crap out of doing custom bikes And doing 16hr days too meet deadlines all the time! And it seems like there’s so much crap and BS that comes with being on TV (like people leaving you page long comments on your KZbin) anyway. Smith Brothers Services, LLC this is second hand info. (Hearsay) I would need to see some sources before I believe something like this.

That's probably why people got killed in those Toyotas at full throttle. No way to shut down the damn car engine

Push button start is a thing to get kids to buy new vehicles. I think it is stupid. Was tuning my kid's dodge challenger awhile back and had a frustrating time with that effing push button start. Would have been easier with a key when the vehicle needs to have the ignition in the run position, but not be running so the computer can be accessed to load new tunes into it. Got it done, but what a pain in the arse.

You need to be able to shut off a vehicle in any gear. That is a major safety concern.

My favorite ones are when you have to slide the key fob into a slot and then hit the button next to it like in Mini Coopers. 👎🏼

More expensive electronic parts to replace... Pretty soon there will be no fixing just all replacing Oh I forgot to add... I noticed your temp showing was 61° in Phoenix today I got in my car and it said 131° hahaha

Push button start BLOWS! I'd rather take a kick in the balls than have a push button start.

Dammit Vinnie, As an experienced mechanic you should know that button needs to be calibrated with a greasy ball pien hammer. Ok? Check back if you need further instructions....lol
